you think it's cruel that a belief in an afterlife might make grief after a death easier on someone.... or the fear of death is lessened?

I personally like the reasurance that when I die that might not be the end for me.

Avatar: I read a lot of what you said.... and it didn't make a lot of sense. Sorry. You generalized things too much, and assumed a lot that wasn't true. You need to get your facts straight.

your assumptions about the universe and about religion are no better or worse than those made by the religious. You say religious people are ignorant for believing in God, but what makes you any less ignorant for assuming he's not there.

okay, well then I guess I was just repeating what you were saying.

However, I don't believe it is impossible to know that God exists. Sure we may not be able to see God right in front of us, but the same goes for other things. I can't hold gravity and show it to you, but you know it exists. You can see the effect it has on things.

Well, to me God works in the same way. He doesn't come right out and go "Hi, I'm God". God is seen in smaller ways. In more everyday things and experiences.

You think you've got 65 years, but you may not.

As for the Bible, most of what is really worth reading is in the New Testament (the second half). The first half is a lot of boring stuff . Just my opinion though.

As for learning about other religions, I believe www.religioustolerance.com or something like that [checks].... that works, but it goes to .org.... whatever

fair enough...

I looked around it for a while and it did seem very un-biased. There weren't any accusations or false statements or anything like that. Everything seemed to be pretty reasonable and at least partially documented.

And the things that were story or possibly untrue, they admitted that those things might not be true.

Quite impressed honestly.

I'm not defending it.... I'm just saying.... why should it surprise anyone that my opinions are expressed in an asshole-ish way?

I'm of the opinion that it is okay.... but definitely in moderation.

only as far as the people involved are comfortable and willing

I'm not sure why you can't drink, vote, gamble or buy smokes until 18 (in Canada) but you can have sex at 14 with anyone.... that just blows my mind.

Priorities are really screwed up. The age of consent for sex should be 18, whether hetero or homo. If it's a case of 18 and 17 then I'm sure that can be overlooked.

see, age difference doesn't bother me.... sure, my wife is less than a year younger than I am... but really, if you love someone that is 10 years older than you.... fine

but what I don't agree with is when that happens and one is 13 and the other is 23

yeah.... teenagers generally don't know enough about life to make all their decisions...

which of course pisses them off because they think they are.

anyway.... a 20+ year old is going to have a much easier time influencing a 12-18 year old into having sex....

oh, and maybe it's just me.... but most girls that get pregnant at 13 aren't too happy about it

yeah sure... doesn't always happen.... but it does.... and it shouldn't

I can't believe people actually complain about this.

How long does it take to recite? a minute or 2? are you all that self-centered that you can't take 2 minutes for your country instead of yourself?

I don't really care if it doesn't mean anything to you anymore. It's part of being an american.

Oh, and... America can't hold it's own? Where have you been for the last 50 years, or 100 years? Well, not born for most of them. That's not the point . The point is, America has been the most powerful nation on the planet for the last 100 years.

your whole post was laced with assumptions about the pledge that aren't universally true.... therefore your point, to me, is moot...

Zabuza: well, the parts I didn't like were: "otherwise productive", "meaningless pledge", "brainwashed full-of-shit patriots".

that's why I didn't feel I owed him an answer

holy crap! someone agreed with me!!!

not that I agree with exactly what you just said... but hey, at least someone isn't biting my head off

and Van: thank you! I figure on a board like this (that sways in a more liberal direction) that if I'm not one of the loudest that I'll never be heard

Why can't there be? Why do science and religion have to be so far apart?

I beg to differ.... scientology is NOT what you just said it is....

although that may be what is claimed....

" Scientology is a system of beliefs, teachings and rituals, originally established as an alternative psychotherapy in 1952 by science-fiction author L. Ron Hubbard, then recharacterized by him in 1953 as an "applied religious philosophy." "

wow.... how pathetic...

I wonder how long it took to make that work.... and who wasted the hours to make it possible...

that sort of thing could probably be done for any word and any person.... if someone wanted to again waste the time

I must point out that the founder of Scientology was a science fiction writer....

think about that one for a minute....

and there is no good reason, in my opinion, as to why religion and science can't coexist.... or shall I say.... that religion and science (once we advance science enough) will eventually agree
