Why can't there be? Why do science and religion have to be so far apart?

Because of years of brainwashing by the higher-ups and disagreements... basically, because people are stupid and stubborn.

It's called scientology. Scientology is the practice of attempting to meld together the teachings of both religion and science.

I beg to differ.... scientology is NOT what you just said it is....

although that may be what is claimed....

" Scientology is a system of beliefs, teachings and rituals, originally established as an alternative psychotherapy in 1952 by science-fiction author L. Ron Hubbard, then recharacterized by him in 1953 as an "applied religious philosophy." "

I didn't say they had to be.

Elara briefly explained it to me, I think. But it didn't seem like science supporting religion, the way she made it sound.

And I tried looking it up on dictionary.com, but didn't get a simple explaination.

Basic information on the beliefs of Scientology can be found here.

But personally, I consider it a cult. I mean, you have to give most of your income to be "enlightened" as well as dissassociate yourself from those that do not agree with your new path (like your family). My cousin became a Scientologist... I haven't seen her in over 10 years.

I must point out that the founder of Scientology was a science fiction writer....

think about that one for a minute....

and there is no good reason, in my opinion, as to why religion and science can't coexist.... or shall I say.... that religion and science (once we advance science enough) will eventually agree

he was a science fiction writer that's true. He also wrote other things however and he had a firm basis in reality and was very intelligent. I saw a thing on Scientology that was this one particular individual, no idea what the mans name was or whatever but I could be remembering something wrong where this man was trying to prove that science and religion could coexist without any problems.

Science and religion are both trying to answer the same questions, where we came from, how we got here, what made us that kinda stuff.

You all need to research Pantheism a bit.

http://www.pantheism.net/paul/

It mixes religion and science extremely well without being a cult.

One thing I do not get, is why people get so hung up on creation. Can't people be satisfied with the fact that there was just something here. That no one created it, that it just was. Listen, if there is a god and lonrd, a creator, than who created him. If a god can exist without being created, then a universe can exist without being created.

There is a large possibility that other civilizations are out there, and way more advanced than us.Think about it, if evolution is true, then all that would be necessary for existance would be time. Now given say, 100 billion years, a race of creatures could definitely evolve from the correct compounds. now those creatures could have started out simpler than us humans did, and they could evolve over such a greater amount of time than we took, so they could become more advanced. No say this race eventually learned how to space travel. After mastering it, they could travel all across everywhere. And if they stumbled along a tiny planetary system just strating out, they could persay interfere a bit. To allow us some sort of life.

Because Xeios, even if evolution is real, it doesn't contradict God. While I personally don't believe in it, then it would be easy for God to create us using evolution.

Also, the Mormon religion(mine) does believe that God has a father, and he had a father before him, ect. Some of us go so far as to believe that God once went through what we did. He went onto a planet, lived well, died, became ressurected, and eventually became a God.

We diffenitly do believe that if we live well enough to get to the top level of heaven(Celestial kingdom, in case you were wondering) then we could become Gods, and create our own world.

Also, some of us Mormons do believe in Aliens. In fact, we go so far as to say the Christ came here because earth was the most wicked planet. Why could God not create hundreds of planets, all with sentient beings?

So, science and religion can mix, assuming you use a bit of common sense.

Like I said before

If there is a 100% true religion that has God right, and morality right, and all that stuff..... then in my mind it should co-exist perfectly with science.

Again, maybe not science as we know it today.... but the true, perfect understanding of science that we may not have for a while....

Yeah, geeo's actually got a point...

But, of course, we'll probably never reach such a state, so that's probably a moot point. I figure that every religion has at least one or two things it's gotten wrong (if one was completely right, we'd all be following it already, right?), and since so many people refuse to take ideas from those they disagree with, whether the person is right or not, there'll probably never be a 100% correct religion. SImilarly, since some people refuse to believe religion has any merit whatsoever, it's doubtful that science and religion will ever fully agree.

BUT, given the circumstances you provided, yes, everything wuold be fine.

wow, I had a point.... [smiles inside]

yeah, it's not something that is likely to happen in our lifetime. Or ever. Unless "God" revealed himself to the world and taught us everything that we have right and wrong.... which is also very unlikely....

ironic how everyone's talking about Scientology, and 5 min ago, i just finished reading Wiki pedia's article on scientology....

from what i read.... and drawing my own conclusion, it is a cult. entry members are given a sugar coated version and explaination of what scientology is about. by feeding crap to their entry members, they in turn, help convert others.

"
The "Hidden Truth" about the nature of the universe is taught to the most advanced Scientologists in a series of courses known as the Advanced Levels. These are the levels above "Clear," and their contents are held in strict confidence within Scientology. The most advanced of all are the eight Operating Thetan levels, for which the initiate needs to be thoroughly prepared. The highest level, OT VIII, is only disclosed at sea, on the Scientology cruise ship Freewinds. Since being entered into evidence in several court cases beginning in the 1980s, synopses and excerpts of these secret teachings have appeared in innumerable publications.

In the OT levels, Hubbard describes a variety of traumas commonly experienced in past lives. He explains how to reverse the effects of such traumas by "running" various Scientology processes. Among these advanced teachings, one episode that is revealed to those who reach OT level III has been widely remarked upon in the press: the story of Xenu, the galactic tyrant who first kidnapped certain individuals who were deemed as 'excess population' and loaded these individuals into space planes for transport to the site of extermination, the planet of Teegeeack (Earth). These space planes were supposedly exact copies of Douglas DC-8s. He then stacked hundreds of billions of these frozen victims around Earth's volcanoes 75 million years ago before blowing them up with hydrogen bombs and brainwashing them with a "three-D, super colossal motion picture" for 36 days. The traumatised thetans subsequently clustered around human bodies, in effect acting as invisible spiritual parasites known as "Body Thetans" that can only be removed using advanced Scientology techniques. Xenu is allegedly imprisoned in a mountain and kept in by a force-field powered by an eternal battery.

a complex coctail of non-alcoholic things. I am an Athiest Evolutionist who will believe something else when it has proof when it comes around. I am technically liberal. I dont like politians and politics. I believe that America is home of the currupt and the dumb (not saying other countries arent, just saying America is).

I would like to pick up an animistic belief system like Shinto, but I know that I really wouldnt believe no matter how cool it was and that would be disrespectful to the religion. I dont believe in souls or ghosts as no one has proved it to me. And I dont want to believe in ghosts. Too creepy and I already have a weird paranoid phobia about Zombies (which I also dont believe in). I dont want to believe in a "good" and a "bad" place after we die, because then I am probably going to the "bad" place as I have no frickin' idea how to earn the "good" place and almost every major religions says I go to the "bad" one.

Other than that you can ask me and I will answer.
