First off, I read the Mac vs. Windows thread. Nothing in it applies to me, so please don't try to redirect me.
I recently got a Mac laptop for Christmas. I've wanted one for the security amongst other things. (Like the ever addicting Photobooth.) Anyway, I'm not really familiar with Macs and I wondering what kind of software is necessary or convenient to have. I know that's reaaaally vague/broad (however you look at it) but i'm seriously in the dark here. |

It really depends on what you want to do with the mac. What are you going to use it for?
Macs maintain a good virus protector, so you don't need to do a whole lot about that. Hmm, what opperacting system do you have? Tiger? |

Well, one thing I like about macs is that pretty much all the stuff you need comes with it, unless you have some special purpose. I'd recommend browsing the downloads page, see if there is anything that interests you. | |||

Just as FX said, unless you're looking for software for specialty jobs, just go to the Apple website. They got practically everything you need there. There are two programs I would like to suggest though: Adium and CocoaZip. Adium is a multipurpose IM client, so you won't need anything else. CocoaZip allows you to ZIP files or folders really easily, and can come in handy quite often. Both are free, so cost shouldn't be a problem. Also, if you don't already have it, you should also get Stuffit. That's a neccesity on Macs seeing as the OS can't open ZIP files the way Windows can.
Also, seeing as you got a new Mac, you probably already have iLife installed on there, so you should check out GarageBand. It's a fun little toy to mess around in. If you like it, I can teach you more on how to use it to a great extent. |
