The crops were dying. There was little hope that the Larka family could make it through the harsh winter ahead. Everyone had given up, except for the youngest of the family, Tadirus.

"Why are you all just giving up? There are other ways to make money and our time's not up yet!" Tadirus was young and naiive. "I'm going to join the Coliseum!"

His mother and father looked at him in shock in the tattered fields.

"But son... You can't possibly win!" said his old father. "The competition will kill you!"

"Well, at least then I'll know that I died trying!" replied Tadirus as he stormed away.

"The nerve of that boy of ours!" said his mother. "Are you going to let him just go out and kill himself?" Marx stood staring, motionless. "Marx, are you listening to me?" she said as she shook his shoulder. The dead body of Marx fell limp on to the ground, an arrow protruding from his back.

--------------------------------

"Name?" inquired the man.

"The name's Tadirus Larka and I'm here to win...."

"That will be all, Mr. Larka. Age?"

"... Uhh, nineteen, sir."

The man looked at him. "Aren't you a little young to be throwing away your life?" he said in a sarcastic tone.

"I have to win this. Everyone depends on me! There's nothing that you can say to turn me around now!" declared Tadirus in a confident tone.

"Very well. Step inside."

The gatekeeper opened the large iron gate that led in to the Coliseum and Tadirus stepped inside. Within were many rooms, mostly littered with training equipment for the fighters that would all take part in the arena. Some people could be seen striking wooden dummies with their swords and others were shooting targets with their bows.

"Oi, you, Newcomer! C'mere 'n lemme take a look et ya!" shouted a voice. Tadirus turned around to see a hairy, burly orc with dried mud smeared all over his face. His ugly green face was littered with battle scars. "Ye think thet ye can come in 'ere an win it all? I think yer gonna die before ye can get into the ring!" he said, groping his axe handle.

"Look, I don't want any trouble!" said Tadirus, only too late as the axe came whizzing up from the orc's side. Tadirus barely dodged below the surpise attack and deftly countered with his dagger, straight into the beast's chest. The orc fell backwards against a stone wall with the blade protruding from him as he pulled it out to reveal a geyser of red, warm blood. The orc died with a snort, dagger in hand and his axe at his feet.

"That was too close..." muttered Tadirus as he went for his blade. He wiped the blood from the weapon on the orc's vest.

"Impressive." said a man from behind him. "Fight like that and you just might survive to make a profit out of this place!" Tadirus turned around to face a man clad in splint mail and a bastard sword at his side. The man was about middle aged and had a gleam of wisdom in his eye. He had obviously been here a long time. "You're one of the lucky ones -- You can walk out whenever you like! I was enslaved here eleven years ago, during the war. They signed me over to here and I've been stuck here ever since. I've seen a lot of bloodshed, and I advise that you turn around while you still can."

"Hey, I can handle myself just fine!" said Tadirus, looking back at the corpse of his recently slain foe. "I've worked in the fields my entire life and I know how to rival a bandit's blade. The orc was nowhere near what a bandit could do. Who are you, anyway?"

"You've a quick tongue on you! The name's Nolan."

"Well, Nolan I have my reasons to be here. I'm not going to head back now."

Nolan smirked. "With an attitude like that, its a wonder how you got this far... Anyway, good luck in the ring!" Nolan smiled one more time and walked away in to another room.

"What have I gotten myself in to?" Tadirus said under his breath, sighing.

Lol, I kinda had Oblivion in mind when I made him go into the Coliseum... Even one of the next parts will be kind of inspired by an Oblivion scenario!

Holy fucking bump, Batman! I guess when I say "Later tonight", I actually mean a year and a half! Well, I've been brewing about this story for a while now and I'm ready to pull something together, for all of you happy little Xeogamers (or at least the losers who come to Story Realm and read my crap)! Enjoy!

PS- Read my competition entry before this as it will add some filler into this one.

"Did you find anything worthwhile?" asked Jyne, impatiently.

"Ne, I only found rubbish amongst these wretches. They be only farmers, poor ones at that." replied Therni, looking at the freshly slain couple. "What'd ye expect?"

Jyne had just been admitted into The Consortium only days before now. He had been left a peasant after the constant attacks against his old village, which is now in ruin. "Nothing. Lets report back to the others."

They headed west.

------------------------

"Your skills have improved immensely, Taddi." said Nolan.

"I've asked you to never call me that many times now, Nolli!" responded Tadirus sharply. "It really doesn't suit me."

Tadirus had been training with Nolan for almost a month, in between his successful battles within the Coliseum. He didn't make as much gold as he would have wanted but it was better than what he could have gotten elsewhere. Being young and arrogant, he had little remorse for the souls that he had slain.

"Well then, I haven't been called Nolli in a long time. That used to be a nickname for me when I first came here, you know!" said Nolan. "You remind me of myself sometimes. I was a lot like you, brash and bullheaded..."

"Who are you calling bullheaded? I think before I act, just like everybody else! Well, maybe not everybody..." chuckled Tadirus. "Anyway, I was thinking about taking a leave from here. I wanted to check up on my family, make sure they can still feed themselves."

"Yes. I sometimes wonder if my family is still alive after all of these years. I still cling to the hope that they may be well. It's what keeps me fighting, that one day I can free myself from this place." Nolan considered his age for a moment. "But I may just die an old man before that can become a reality."

"Hey, don't say that! I'm sure they're okay, if they can fight like you!" Nolan fought with such grace that no opponent had ever even been a challenge to him. It was almost surprising that he hadn't payed his debt to his owners with his resounding success. It was perhaps the greed of the owners that he was still here.

"Such kind words. Maybe you're right. Come, let us rest." said Nolan, sheathing his elaborately designed longsword.

"You know, maybe I could pay your debt. I've won my fair share and I could probably free you! I don't need everything I've won to help my family so I think I'll give it a shot!" said Tadirus excitedly.

"No, that would be a waste of time." But Tadirus had left before Nolan could finish. "Ahh, that boy. He never thinks of himself. I only hope that he doesn't get himself into trouble."

------------------------

"Well, you either accept my offer... Or I kill you. It's your choice." said the cloaked figure, palming his dagger.

"Please sire, no need for that! You can have the damned slave, he's not worth my life!"

"Excellent. Here is your payment." said the disguised Tadirus in a sinister voice as he threw the crowns on to the floor. He couldn't believe that the man fell for his bluff! "I'll go get him now. Make a sound to the guards and my men will slice out your tongue and gouge your eyes."

"Yes yes, you have what you came for, so please leave!" said the frightened man.

Tadirus turned away from the lavish manor and stepped away into the night. The moon was full and the air was cold, most befitting of an early spring eve. With a bounce in his step, he was happy to be able to tell his friend of the good news.

------------------------

"How did you manage that?!" asked an incredulous Nolan.

"Simple, I made him an offer that he couldn't refuse!" replied Tadirus with a smirk on his face.

"But that man has everything he could want! How could a few lousy crowns make a difference?"

"He seemed desperate for his life..."

"You fool! He'll have guards all over us!"

"Relax, there's no need to-"

Tadirus was cut short by a small troop of guards. "You are in violation of the law. Come with us and you shall have your life!"

"Damn boy, you really are something. Did you really think that he wouldn't recognize you? He probably saw right through your bluff. We should just surrender-" said Nolan, being cut off by Tadirus rushing the guards. "You never cease to amaze me, Taddi." Nolan unsheathed his sword. These guards didn't know what was coming.
