| Out of a bit of prodding from a friend, I joined Gaia a few days ago and have played a bit every day since. Granted the game is rather addicting, but many facets of it simply annoy the hell out of me.
First off, the main goal of the site is to earn enough gold to buy or trade for rare items for your avatar to wear and accessorize their homes with. Truly this goal is a novelty, but it's almost obnoxious when one is confronted with elaborately dressed regulars taunting you for your starter clothes, but such is being a newbie. Second, it seems as though EVERYONE on the site is in their pre-teens and what's more cannot write for shit. The site is riddled with improper grammar, PeOpLe TyPiNg LiKe ThIs, or r talkng 2 u lik ths lawl, and half of the people seem to have an attitude. While I was playing a game in their "casino" (the casino only has slots and black jack), I tried to socialize with people in the little chat boxes at the bottom of the screen. Upon mentioning my rotten luck with the dealer, one chimes in to say, "lawl u suk" and I jokingly replied back, "Yeah, my luck sucks." To which another goes, "No u sukk. Fuck ur." Erm... great comeback? Who triggered this little fight? I laughed and said that he was funny (sarcastically) to which other people jumped in to agree (seriously). Then I asked how old they all were and got back an assortment of 11s and 14s while the one who made the comment didn't answer. Good grief. A couple days ago when I was chatting with a rather nice person, they happened to ask how old I was. I told him 21, but was immediately inundated with people telling me I'm old. I laughed for a bit. Third point, much to my chagrin, the place is a frickin' mini-MySpace. While walking around in the little RPG section, I kept getting approahed by people who'd suddenly run up to my character and declare, "Friend me!!" Um... who are you? I'd watch these people have a couple words with each other before the friend requests would be brought up. It wouldn't be much, but more of a "Hi!" "Wut up?" "Friend me!" Not only this, but most of the site is pretty much a hybrid of MySpace and LiveJournal. If you're on both sites, you'd marvel at the ridiculous likenesses of the layouts and ideas. Law suit worthy, really. Not to sell the site short. There are some really nice people on there and some interesting little additions, but overall the site is mostly one big piss-off to anyone over 18. I dunno. Anyone have anything to say about it? |

| I actually joined it awhile ago and kinda liked it, until of course I tried to post in the forums. Not only was there WAY too much racism and immaturity. I actually started it when I was 16 and even I had to say that it was way too immature for me (and I am the king of tolerance and immaturity..... Trust me on this on!)
All in all, it would be a way better place if they deleted 90% of the people on the site. Till then, I'll just stick to the great, friendly environment on the Xeogaming board! [/suckingup] |

I think I'm done with Gaia. Originally I joined because my 20-something-year-old friend was raving about it. Go figure, though. EDIT: As I read over that thread, it appears that the OP, though they have a female avatar and claim to be female in their profile, is actually male and was raped by his female fiance. | Well, as FX had explained it to me once, preteens manage to joke about sexual things, and the sad thing is they have no idea what they are actually going on about.
I mean some of those replies look like quotes from a TV program that children of the age they make themselves out to be shouldn't be watching for another 10 years. |

| That's exactly why I left Gaia Online and why I hated posting in their forums. It absolutely disgusts me!
Its funny how kids try to act all grown up by cussing and making crude jokes, but I realized as I got older that I started to cuss a lot less. Well, I still cuss, but I don't see myself as a badass doing so. Normally its just a "damn" or "shit" when I stub my toe, or just when it just comes out once in a while like when I describe dial up..... I never thought I would say this, but.... Kids these days..... |

| It actually is amusing being around pre-teens and some teenagers, specifically the cousins and siblings of my friends and boyfriend. They curse at EVERY opportunity, no matter how unfitting it is for the topic or the time.
Example: "Hey, how you doin'?" Their answer: "I'm fucking all right." No the italics thing isn't meant to set it off so much as show how the over-emphasize the swear words in a sort of, "Look at me! I'm cursing like a grown-up!!" I didn't really start swearing until I was 16. There just wasn't any reason to curse. I do swear a lot now, but not so much so that it's a noteworthy part of the conversation. Whenever I hear preteen and most teenagers swear it's excessive and like the example I've posted above. In Gaia, I'm amazed by the things they talk about and how they address the topics. Kind of reminds me of "Kids Say the Darnedest Things." One of them in conversation: "I remmber seeing on CNN that if u pour Aliseltzer on the guy's dick, u wont get pregnant." |
