Okay this is less of a general question, more of a personal one.

For christmas I'm allowed to get a new computer for it. Now before anyone says anything, no I'm not buying the parts and building it. Too much fuss.

I was wondering, should I get a Windows comp or a Mac comp? I mean Windows is what I'm used to, infact I've been used to it practically since I was born. But I've seen the things that are on a Mac such as the video editing software and GarageBand, and they seem the programs I would use. The only thing is Mac's single mouse button confuses me.

So what should I go for? Reasons would be nice too.

I don't have much to say other than the fact that you can use just about any kind of mouse for new Mac's these days (hell, we used Microsoft's basic optical mouses for our Mac's last year in animation), and there are decent video editing programs out there also for Windows computers.

Personally, I'd say Windows just because they seem more flexible. After working with a Mac for a year, I just don't see why I'd need one. Then again, we never did much but just browse the net, mess with Garageband, and use Maya (oh, and don't tell me Mac programs don't crash. Maya crashed several of the computers regurarly).

Well, I'd reccomend you get a Windows PC. Why? Because gaming is more limited on a MAC. Sure, plenty of games are ported to it, but not as many as say...the ones on Windows.

Besides that, I still need to beat you at Halo, and that's nearly impossible if you only have a laptop, a bad computer, and your mom's good computer.

Oh, and try to get an uber-1337 expensive PC, like an Alienware(not any of their recent ones)

It totally depends on what you want to do with the computer. I, as you all know, have a mac. That is because I use Final Cut for movie editing, and prefer the overall easyness of a mac. I prefer console gaming, so the lack of games doesn't really bother me. I have WoW, Risk, and Tetris. That's all I need. If I need some more, there is actually a MASSIVE amounts of games on mac. You just have to know where to look, since they are a separate version, as opposed to one that runs on both.

I would say get a Windows computer.

I have owned, used, and created shit for Macs, Linux, and Windows. On all three, the software seem to be roughly the same. Example. Without using WinE on Linux, you could not use Photoshop. But GIMP does everything Photoshop can do, and it's open source, works perfectly on Linux. So music, video, and photo editing should not be a factor in which one you choose, as there is software on all of them that work quite well.

Security, if thats an issue for you. Again, I have ran all three, and Macs are very secure. But is that imporant to you? Having run all three for well over 4 years now, I have yet to get a single virus on any of them. If you know what your doing, you should be fine in this department. You deside if this is a factor to you.

Games. Windows whomps all other OS's. Not to say they all could not preform, but there is a much bigger selection on Windows then any other. Plus, most of the big title games are made for Windows only, but there are a few thats multi-platform.

Thens theres familiarity. You said you were more familiar with Windows. Do not underestimate how much this matters. Going to Linux this would be an issue. One that you could overcome, mind you, but it would take a little time. Macs are a little different as well, but they are a lot more user friendly then Linux.

All in all, like I said at the top, I would get Windows. You are more familiar with it, more software and even hardware are compatiable with it, as well as the games.

You make a very good point Enyulan. I am not anti-PC, like most mac users. I am just trying to spread the awareness of the multitude of games that are released for mac. You just need to know where to look:

*looks at game list*

KOTOR still being in the front page announcements? The 2003 KOTOR? lol, yes, that is definitally gaming.

Actually though, I believe that it is possible to have both Linux and Windows operating on the same computer. According to recent information, then I think that you can install Windows on a MAC PC too. So you could try that, with all the hardware of a MAC, the software of Microsoft.

I have a Mac. I prefer a Mac. There are ways of getting around the second button, like holding the "ctrl" (control) button down and clicking. Mac is simple, it's common sense, and sleek, you CAN find games for it, I bought my Mac over a year ago and it hasn't crashed, and runs exactly the same as when I bought it.

Get an Intel-Based Mac. That way you get everything you want on one machine. By being able to run Windows on Mac, you'll be able to use everything you use on your current computer on the Mac, plus you'll have OS X on it to so if you ever want to do something Windows can't, just load up OS X. Also, I suggest getting as much power as you can without going too high. Ask for as much Processor and RAM as you can. That way, you'll have one powerful beast.

I don't really need to argue my above paragraph, because no matter what you say about Windows being better or Mac being worse, it'll lead to the fact that Windows can be run on Mac, and whatever you say will apply to both.

I would say Windows... Mac sucks on several levels... one is the mouse (HOW THE FUCK ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO USE THAT THING!??), second... they are not anywhere near as durable as they claim to be. I can get one to crash just by looking at it (yes... I have done it before). I have not had a PC crash on me in about 9 years... any mac I touch crashes in 0.65 seconds. That and the fact that vulnerability to viruses is about your Anti-virus software, I don't see how the computer producer itself would effect that.

And just in short... Apple needs a new naming system... the guy who names stuff the I-MAC and the I-BOOK... needs to be shot.... hell.... i saw an I-STORE about a month ago... had to stop a friend of mine from charging in and bashing stuff (maybe not quite that bad... but he hates the naming system too)

You're ignorance makes me laugh. The mouse is now normal, and you can use any USB mouse on a mac. It is amazing that you have never had a PC crash in nine years....and durable is not the right word to use there. And the reason Macs can't get viruses, is because of the operating system. They just don't work on Macs. Which bugs me because I know people who have paid for virus software for mac. WHY?. And the i thing does get a little annoying, but it is like putting 'windows' in the names of their products, nothing wrong with that. Now when other people start doing it, that's just catching onto a trend. I saw on tv, the iLounge, a reclining chair. WHAT? If you're going to use 'i', at least have it pertain to ipod or something.

What bugs me about people saying shit about macs is that most of them have never used one, and are completely ignorant. I don't mind if you don't like them, and want to use a PC, but at least give them a chance.

1) The mouse isn't the complicated. Before is was one button, so if you were confused by that, you don't belong on computers. Also, it's like most mouses, it has a left and right click, and a scroll ball(instead of a scroll bar), and the side buttons are just zooming tools from what I've heard. Not that complicated.
2) If you can get one to crash by looking at it, you must be ugly. And if you touch it and it crashes that fast, you must contain some mighty powerful technology eating software in your skin. Seriously, my Mac has rarely crashed, probably just about the same amount of times as any Windows computer, and it's all for the same reason - CPU overload.
3) Macs don't need Anti-Virus software because they aren't vulnerable to any viruses. The coding for it is much more secure and it's harder to make viruses for it.
4) Don't judge a book by it's cover. Just because the name doesn't appeal to you it doesn't give you right to say it sucks. I used to dislike Windows up until I used it thoroughly. I still prefer Mac over Windows, but there are some things I do like about Windows.

Don't bash on something until you've actually USED something. Don't make up lies and over exaggerate on things, it makes you look bad.

It was the one button thing that got me... couldn't figure out how to right click on anything, it was too fucking simple... I like dificult. And hey this is personal opinion... I hate Mac... I think it is overrated... for me PC's work far better than MAC's as shown by the it takes it all of .65 seconds for it to crash when I use it. PC's like me MAC's don't.

I disliked the whole no right click thing too, but it was really just CONTROL+CLICK. Yeah it was a bad idea, but it worked.

As I said above, don't over exaggerate what you say. Computers do not crash before they boot unless you are running a laptop on a dead battery.

May I ask when the last time you used a Mac? What kind of Mac was it, was OS did you use, and what year was it?

I must start whith a story,

Once upon a time there was an I mac (mac needs a new naming sitem). this i mack outperformed all the other macheens at the school. thean one day it had a masive crash and died for no reson at all and was dameged beond repair. a yung student curius as to why the mack compony said it could not be fixt opined it to see for himself. what he found on the inside was the worlds crapiest engonering. the first thing he noticed was that evrything was sodered together so it had to be cut free. after all the compnets (now slightly dameged due to the cuting and pulling) where removed he begain to examin each piece, the hard drive was shot to hell whitch had caused the computer to die and could not be replaced do to the sodering. (this was thean thrown out), the cpu was sotered to the mothere bord so that there would be no way to replace it shuld somthing go rong and you would have to buy a new mac.

i was the student in the story and i have to say, MAC SUCKS! there hardwear is a compleat joke, not to mention mac osx is the glichyest os ever. you cant run most programs on them becaues of its "unikenes" programing on a mac is a headacke becuse you have to translate c++ in to macks own computer langedge. mac is a desies of the computer world luckly there is a cure! ill list a step by step prooses for curing you macintosh deises.

1. unplug your mac

2. pick it up and walk to the highest piont of your house/office make shure it is opin to the outside. if this location is a window be shure there is no screen.

3. extend the mack over the ledge.

4. relise the mack so it shaters to pices on the ground below, (if the space below is crouded make shure you shout the tradition scotish worning of garde lou and for gods sake dont hurt/kill eany one)

5. buy yourself windows operating pc.

You know, being the computer freak I am, I'm going to TEAR this post apart.

First off, don't argue something if you can't even spell right.

Next, your story is bullshit. My friends dad works on Macs on the time, and he's taken a few apart. My friend has shown me most of the part that are inside a Mac, most which are practically the same as any computer that runs any other OS.

Also, I've never heard of a computer just suddenly deciding not to work. If that really happened, either the power cord came out, or we have a paradox.

Another thing, you rarely replace a part of a computer because it's so expensive. You're better just buying a new computer for no matter what OS. You can replace any part in any computer(I believe, not too sure about the mother board). It just costs so much, why not just buy a new computer?

And since when has Mac ever said their computers can't be fixed? That's bullshit too, because they can be fixed in just the same was as practically every other type of computer.

Let's take the next paragraph step by step shall we?

i was the student in the story and i have to say, MAC SUCKS!
We'll see by the rest of your horibally written paragraph if that's true.

there hardwear is a compleat joke.
Their hardware existed before Windows did, and it's must more stable, and generally the way they're made the CPU usage isn't too bad.

not to mention mac osx is the glichyest os ever.
I have not yet to see one glitch in my computer. I've had simple problems, easy to fix, but not ONE glitch. Windows 95 was glitchy, not OS X.

I was baffled by the terrible grammar and confusing topic connectivity of the next sentence. I'll have to break it down into smaller chunks.

you cant run most programs on them...
Yes you can.
...becaues of its "unikenes" programing...
No, that's because the producers of the programs don't make it for Mac. There are a lot of great Mac only applications that don't run on Windows because the company doesn't feel like releasing them on another OS. That's like saying PS2 is bad because it doesn't have Mario. Also, it's Unix, not Unike
...on a mac is a headacke...
Your post is a headache
...becuse you have to translate c++...
O RLY?
...in to macks own computer langedge.
It's really not that big of a problem unless the program was coded in a format that would take forever for it to be converted onto another OS, which is very rare. FL Studio is a prime example of that.

mac is a desies of the computer world luckly there is a cure!
DISEASE. Your terrible typing is a DISEASE.
Anyways, a computer cannot be a disease, for it is just a simple(complex in reality) machine, so you can't cure it. But I'll still rip through your failure steps anyways.

1. unplug your mac
It's a laptop, so it'll continue to run after I unplug it.

2. pick it up and walk to the highest piont of your house/office make shure it is opin to the outside. if this location is a window be shure there is no screen.
Well by now you've pratically given the rest of your "great cure" away.

3. extend the mack over the ledge.
I refuse to hold my Mac over the ledge. Mostly because if I did, I wouldn't be able to finish this post.

4. relise the mack so it shaters to pices on the ground below, (if the space below is crouded make shure you shout the tradition scotish worning of garde lou and for gods sake dont hurt/kill eany one)
I don't think it'll shatter on grass. The computer is pretty tough, and has been through quite a lot. I doubt that by dropping out off my roof will break it.

5. buy yourself windows operating pc.
Macs run Windows. You fail.

And now it's Grammar Nazi Time so no one else injures themselves while trying to read your post.

I must start with a story,

Once upon a time there was an iMac (mac needs a new naming item). This iMac performed better than all the other machines at the school. Then one day it had a massive crash and died for no reson at all. It was damaged beyond repair. A young student that was curious as to why the Mac company said it could not be fixed opened it to see for himself. What he found on the inside was the worlds crappiest engineering. The first thing he noticed was that everything was sodered(I don't even know what the hell this is supposed to be) together so it had to be cut free. After all the components (now slightly damaged due to the cutting and pulling) were removed, he begain to examine each piece. The hard drive was shot to hell which had caused the computer to die and could not be replaced do to the sodering(Then why'd you soder? D: ). This was then thrown out. The CPU was sodered to the mother board so that there would be no way to replace it(Well that was a bad idea). If something should go wrong, you would have to buy a new Mac.

I was the student in the story and I have to say, "MAC SUCKS!" Their hardware is a complete joke, not to mention that Mac OS X is the glitchiest OS ever. You can't run most programs on them becaues of its Unix-based programing. It is a headache because you have to translate the code of the programs in to Mac's own computer language(which one are you speaking? ). Mac is a disease of the computer world and luckily there is a cure! I'll list a step by step process for curing you Macintosh disease.

1. Unplug your Mac.

2. Pick it up and walk to the highest piont of your house/office. Make sure it is open to the outside. If this location is a window, be sure there is no screen.

3. Extend the Mac over the ledge.

4. Release the Mac so it shatters to pieces on the ground below. If the space below is crowded, make sure you shout the traditional Scotish warning of "Garde Lou"(why don't you just say, "HEY EVERYONE! MOVE THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY!") and for God's sake don't hurt/kill any one.

5. Buy yourself a Windows operating PC(should say Mac Pro LOLOLOLOL).

The second paragraph was a bitch to edit, but I think I fixed it. Anything I missed? Next time, type better when you want to prove a point.

I'm gonna ask this question to you, too. When was the last time you used a Mac? What kind of Mac was it, was OS did you use, and what year was it?

EDIT: Oh God that took too long to write. I'm not gonna spend 45 minutes(approx.) on a post ever again unless I have to. Man I am tired. *yawns*
