What exactly does this mean? I know I dont have alot of speed on my PC. But is there any way ofsolving this problem by like, Buying more RAM or anything?

Virtual Memory is disk space that your computer will use in the same (almost) manner as RAM. However, it fragments the disk like hell.

You can change the number in "System" (Control Panel -> Performances (?) -> System) -> Advanced -> Performances - Advanced -> Modify (at the bottom).

Set it to 2.5 or 3 times the ram you have (I believe that's it)

Also, the path I gave might be wrong because I have Windows in french, so I only did a rough translation.

Alright, THis information helped me out alot, I just dont know what in the hell I was doing earlier seriously....But im kinda confused about this part here...

Screenshot

On the Inital size I put 256 for the amount of Ram I have....and the Maximum size X 2.5 like what you told me....this right?

Edit- for some ungodly reason, the "img src=" Tags arent working...

EDIT- WOW THIS IS PISSING ME OFF

For intial, I'd put 1.5 the ammount of RAM you have.
Max, put three times the ammount of RAM you have.

Also, if you're running out of virtual memory, it means that your hard drive is filling up. Try deleting stuff you don't need to free up virtual memory. Having an e-mail account that is web-based, like Yahoo! or G-mail, can help save stuff to the web rather than have it on your PC if you still want to keep stuff.

So, in addition to changing the memory allocation, which can only help if you have the free space, try deleting some things or uninstalling programs you don't use much or at all.

Thats the funny thing, I have 2 40 GB hardrives that are both not even filled up....

I use my Local Disc C: drive for programs like AOL DIaler, Fireworks, Firefox, Stories, and some Gif images....like my userbars, which so far only take up about 400 MB of room....

My Local "Bitch" E: Drive is for my games, right now I only have 3 games installed out of the 12 games I bought...

C: Drive room percentage used up, 24%, and that includes windows

Local bitch E: drive room percentage room used up, 19%....

But also I kinda noticed something....My hardrives are slow and outdated. I took both of them from an old 99 Gateway....So that might be the reason....My hardrives may also be slow....

Yes, but the amount of room currently on your drives does not show how much space the virtual mem portion is taking up. Since you're running games, and I assume the virtual mem message appears after you're done, the memory allocation is probably being used up during the running of those games. Since you've got a lot of room on both drives, increasing the size allocation in Windows might alleviate the problem. If you've got the room, try going five times the size of your RAM.

Also, you're talking mem here. Speed is only an issue if you have low mem and slow hard drives. Since you said they're out-dated, and you probably don't want to migrate everything to a new hard drive, you could install more memory to help alleviate the use of hard drive memory allocation. Windows is still programmed to use hard drive memory allocation, but, it will speed up processes if it has more RAM memory for use in processing the hard drive memory it creates.

Also, defragment your drive. I know it takes a really long time, but it will improve access speeds.

For some reason, I cant defragment my Hard drives due to defragment problems. My uncle is a major computer technician at TSYS, and hes going to take a look into that.

Ive done disc cleanups, upgrades I can think of, I even bought that new One Set kit from windows to maxamize (Sp?) performance...

Im going to get a better PC hopefully when I get my next big break. My friend has a top of the line Hard drive thats over a hundred gigs, and a new Motherboard he wants to give me for about 120$, which he said it was a steal because the motherboars is a dual AMD Athalon processor...( I know that dosent have anything to do with virtural memory, but my Processor is seriously slow at the moment, 1.27 Ghz )

But what was solved here actually fixed the problem. But I know I cant avoid this situation in the future...

Get Diskeeper (in non-legal ways of course, even if it's worth the price), it's awesome.

Doesn't lag the computer as the built in defrag, lots of other options, etc.

I don't like Disckeeper, but then, I can just set my computer to defrag and walk away because I have other computers to work on.

This is a tricky question.

Depending on what you use your computer for and how much ram you actually have you can just disable Virtual Memory.

VM or the Swap file is a file on your harddrive which emulates physical memory.

Basically say you have a bunch of applications running. When the main memory gets filled up, the OS starts pushing the least frequently access information into the swap file. Then if it's needed again, the OS pulls the info out of this psuedo memory space.

This is done so that the program can continue to work under the assumption that it's data and information is still in main memory. The program has no idea that part or all of it's data is in the swap. So when the application needs that data, the OS just pulls it back into main memory and passes it to the program.

Now if you don't play any games and you have at least 1G of ram, you'd probably be entirely safe disabling swap alltogether.

I hate VM / Swap. If a program's data is in the swap file, it might as well have to go out to the harddrive to get it again anyway.

Plus windows is horrible about creating obese file caches. So a bunch of file cache ends up eating up your main system memory which increases the swap rate.

So if I'm going to have to go to the hdd for information, I'd much rather my programs all remain in active memory and then just go out for files than to be constantly swapping things in and out of the main system memory.

I'd recommend NOT disabling virtual memory since you do play games. But, if you're the typical user on most of your computers, like I am, then you're pretty safe doing it. However, since I do edit videos and Photoshop and run memory hungry applications, I've never disabled the paging files on any of my compies. Hell, the Linux boxes get their own hard drives for Page files.

Linux boxes do not get their own harddrives for page files either.

The way Linux works it requires a specially formated swap partition on the harddrive.

I guess if you wanted like a 40 gig swap file you could dedicate an entire drive to it though, lol.

I even play games with my swap file off. Use Photoshop etc.....

The only time I have to turn it on is when I fire up NASA World Wind.

That's what I meant, dear Mr. Painfully Specific. I don't have an entire 40GB hard drive dedicated to the page file. It's a 10GB hard drive, formatted as a single partition, for page file access solely for Linux use.

lol 10Gigs is silly for a swap partition and nobody else dedicates an entire drive in their system soley for their swap file.

Especially since a 10 gig drive is so incredibly old and slow you'd be impacting performance significantly versus just having a normal sized swap partition as the first slice of your main drive
