Ethicists blast fake blood study

CHICAGO Imagine after a car crash lying unconscious and bleeding in an ambulance as paramedics, and later, the hospital give you an experimental blood substitute before doctors try the real thing.

Ethicists say a nationwide study doing just that on hundreds of trauma patients without their consent should be halted.

It's a renewed attack on research that began in 2004 after Northfield Laboratories in Evanston got federal approval for its study of the blood substitute Polyheme.

A Wall Street Journal article last week suggested the company tried to conceal heart attacks that occurred in a separate Polyheme study six years ago.

Northfield halted that study and hasn't published the full results. But company Chairman Doctor Steven Gould says there were no safety problems and no attempts at secrecy.

An article to appear next week on the Web site of the American Journal of Bioethics says the newer study is unethical because many participants didn't know about that previous study.

So should doctors have the right to use "fake blood"? Here's what Wikipedia has to say about it: Artificial Blood

I don't think there is a way to consent an unconsious person

Obviously there are going to be the victims who are awake but still are told nothing. Just use what works and experiment on volunteers I say. The doctors using this fake blood will probably end up in court due to lawsuits for possibly malpractice or something along the lines of not having consent of the paitent first.

Fake blood does sound interesting, it'd just be best to test on volunteers or experimental animals first before you do the real deal on people in real accidents.

well, if we are talking about ethics then no, they shouldn't be allowed to use "fake blood" on you without your consent.... especially since it sounds like they are still testing it to make sure it works....

I'd want a few more tests done before they started pumping that stuff into my body. And I would love if this fake blood works and can be made in large quantities cause then I won't feel obligated to get stabbed every once in a while to save lives and such

Sythesized blood sounds promising... Still, if those heart attacks are linked to the blood, the corp in question could be a crapload of trouble.

Do they have the results of the lab testing on animals? I'm sure with something like this that they've tested on animals first.

But yeah, it is messed up to use it without consent while it's still in experimental stages... but I can only assume that it's the only way they can even do the experiment. Damn you ethics!

Ethics? Bah humbug. No one sees the big picture here. If it can be substituted in a crisis, then they've made an amazingly wonderful medical breakthrough. If you don't accept the blood, they can put in real blood. Everyone dies eventually, I don't see the big deal in this.

the big deal? what if the blood doesn't take and your heart stops beating properly and then you die because of it.... that's gonna suck.

Yeah, we all die eventually.... but most people want to postpone that day until some time in the future

I'd rather die in an accident and been used to try and propel the longetivity of the rest of our messed up species then to die alone on a porch in a rocking chair.

good call Hobo. however from wat many of my mom's doctor friends say, the "fake" blood works with all blood types. meaning that rather than have someone hemorrage to death, the use the "fake stuff". it works just the same as blood, except people wont have to donate, then the doctors test the blood for disease, etc. plus which would u rather have, ur own death or fake blood, which is just as potent as real blood, injected into ur vains, causing u to live? i would pick the fake blood.

You know what's scary about this? Durham, a city near where I live, is allowed to use this on all patients unless they don't want it. However, most people in Durham barely know anything about it, meaning that all of them are going to have fake blood.

A mexican man when asked about what he thinks about experiemental fake blood: "Yeah, it's a pretty good idea I think."

What's even more scary is that if there's a real emergency, that's where I'd go to the hospital...

If the patient consents then they can use the artifical blood but if they don't say ok then it should not be used.

That was what I would say IF the artifical blood had any real problems but since I read that it doesn't I dont see any problem with it. Heart attack's are always a risk to people anyway.

You can do blood tranfusions with patients who volunteer. Hemophiliacs who get blood transfusions regulary could give conscious consent if asked.

There was no reason to use artificial blood on unconcious patients. O+ blood can be used on anyone at least enought to save a persons life. Tests can then verify which blood type the person is and the doctors can then pull out the more specified blood. That is why O+ blood is so desired by the Red Cross. It works with EVERYONE.

Whether or not there were sideeffects doesnt matter. The doctor is supposed to consider the wishes of their patients.

I know I dont want my doctor doing anything to me without my consent.
