BERLIN (AFP) - Gothic US rocker Marilyn Manson announced at the Berlin Film Festival that he plans to direct a film based on the diary of Lewis Carroll in which he will play the part of the writer of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland".

Manson, his hair jet-black and his face painted a deathly white, said he wanted to show the dark obsessions of the Victorian author rather than make a period film because that would be "boring".

"It is very much about his obsessions, not so much about the Victorian era. There will be sex," he told reporters.

Manson, a bete noire of moralists who fear he is corrupting the youth with his blood-stained lyrics, said he identified with Carroll and wanted to focus on the dark side of his most famous work.

"I have many things in common with him. He was very much linked to his childhood.

"I want to take the children's story that we all know and discover the horrifying roots that grow beneath every one of its childish metaphors," he said.

Through Manson's looking glass, Carroll's story becomes that of a haunted writer living in an isolated castle, tormented by sleepless nights and visions of a girl named Alice.

"He finds himself becoming a symptom of his own invention. He is Lewis Carroll. Terrified of what waits for him each night," the script synopsis presented to journalists reads.

"Lewis Carroll is far more complex than the world's narrow perception of him as a quiet deacon, mathematician and a loner, simply obsessed with photographing young girls," Manson said.

"He was possibly one of the most divided souls living in his own hell that the world has overlooked."

Alice Liddell, the young girl who inspired Carroll's greatest work and with whom he had a controversial friendship, will be played by the model Lily Cole, who has done catwalk work for fashion houses like Christian Dior and Hermes.

Manson will not only play Carroll, whose real name was Charles Dodgson, but compose the sound track for the film.

"People assume I am going to make an hour-and-a-half video but it is not the case," he promised.

He said other actors he has been considering for roles in the film include
Julie Christie and
Angelina Jolie.

"Angelina liked the idea," said the singer whose albums include "Antichrist Superstar".

The film will be titled "Phantasmagoria - The Visions of Lewis Carroll" and should be completed in 2007.

Well it's more like Johnny Depp in "Finding Neverland". It's a movie about the creator of "Alice in Wonderland".

I absolutely loved "Finding Neverland", so we'll see how this comes out.

Marilyn Manson and Angelina Jolie (possibly)?! I'm already sold. The movie could be about teletubbies for all I care.

I really, really have my doubts with this movie. If anyone is going to make a movie about the life of Lewis Carroll, the WORST possible person for the job is Marilyn Manson.

He's going to warp the truth. He's going to exaggerate only the dark parts and, to add onto that, use his name in order to gain the attention of a certain mass of people. He is taking another man's art, a piece which is extremely easy to manipulate in order to sound like something it really isn't, and doing exactly that to better his own name and ideals.

Even if you've only seen the Disney movie, its definetly true that the movie has darker parts, but those aren't what are supposed to be paid attention to. It's simply the story about a young girls transition into the adult world. That's it. Drug references are in there. If you're anywhere past the shallow end though, you'll soon realize thats not what the entire work is about.

Yes. Lewis Carroll was an alleged pedophile. Nothing was ever recorded FROM WHAT I'VE HEARD, nor was he punished, it was only a wide rumor, which, I'll admit, probably was true. If this movie dares to even stumble onto that topic, than Marilyn Manson has truly dipped pretty shallowly into the idea pool for this movie. As I said, he's just looking for a way to make Alice in Wonderland darker than what it really was.

You're probably like "Huh, why do YOU care mr. know-it-all." First off, I don't know it all, but I know enough to say that Manson is only doing this for his own well being, not for the sake of art. He's doing it to portray a skewed, wrong message that defiles any sort of respectable meaning to Lewis Carrolls work. He's using a mass of people that find the ideas of "darkness and insanity". It's PROBABLY for his own selfish goals.

Shit. I probably did that all for no reason. I'm probably reading something wrong. I HOPE I'm reading something wrong, and I HOPE that I AM wrong, cause if I'm not, meh... I've said enough... don't kill me...

I'm sure you are reading something wrong Voltron.

I think it's cool that he's doing this. There are some dark overtones to the novel and it's good to see someone focusing on that for a change. I don't see it as self-serving at all. Manson is a very artistic person, music aside... and I think it's great that he's branching into directing.

Better his own name? He doesn't give a fuck about what people think of him, so why would he care about bettering his name? He's doing it because it means something to him, and I personally look forward to seeing it. If Angelina Jolie is in it then I might be able to even drag my boyfriend to see it.

To tell you the truth I am a mansonite.. I will see it even if it has bad or good reviews, I'll say that I cant wait till this movie come's out in '07.

Somthing that most people dont know about manson is that he has an extremely high IQ from what ive heard, also just like Elara said, He dosnt really give a shit about how this is going to effect his career, he know's that his fans are going to love it to death possibley just because it was made by him. I just hope that it isnt kicked out of theaters a week after release like "House of a 1000 corpses was", I dont want to wait for the dvd to come out

Ehh...I'm not a mansion fan. Never was and prolly never will be. Just notmy personal preference. I am interested in seeing how this will fold out however. I enjoyed "Finding Neverland" so I'd say this would be worth a looksee...

That's really all I could comment on though, since I don't even know much about "Alice In Wonderland", with the exception of the Disney movie of course.
