This is something I've been midly angered about for some time.

In my opinions, we should only have main catagories, not labels like emo music, soft rock, alternative rock, Hip-Hop, Heavy Metal, Nu-Metal, whatever.

If you're rock, you're just rock.

If you're rap, you're just rap.

The whole system about it gets under my skin. I hate the ideas of labels. We don't need names for everything just because you have a different sound. Your opinion please.

Music is music. Fuck labels. Get rid of all of them, even the "main categories". And then just go by bands.

That shouldn't be too hard, I'm sure.

Edit: I'm kinda of the opinion that this would be better suited to Entertainment, but I'll wait for a second opinion here; I can see where it's debatable.

Well, I voted yes. Now, lemme attempt to explain this and make sense while doing it.

For one, I like labels as far as music from different cultures are concerned. It allows me to give credit to whatever culture that music came from and just helps with understanding what I'm listening to.

Same with music we're familiar with in our own country, I guess. Like...music is music to me, yes, but...I'm a bit of an artistic person at heart and I like looking into things like music and art. Music is something that I truly love and I like so many different types that it would be difficult for me to try and keep up without categorizing them a bit.

However, the thing concerned with labels that I totally disagree with, is when the labels on the music you listen to all of a sudden determine who YOU are. Grant it, music is a part of who I am, but I'm in control of that, not the labels on the music I listen to...if that makes any sense...but, that's a totally different topic of discussion I suppose.

Music is music. I agree with Katana, I hate it when people label you by the kind of music you like. I like a little bit of everything, and I mean everything. From Slipknot to Michael Jackson. Labels suck.

Well I have to agree with all points of view on this subject, But I voted yes,

I agree that there alot of different types of music, and most of the time there's to many, but if you start just putting all the different types of Rock or Metal together, it just dosnt work in general, The Label they give differnt music is there for a reason so that people know what there into, Some people might like Rock but not Punk Rock, or they might like Heavy Metal , but not Speed Metal or Death Metal, The different labels tell how much they are different from each other.

You make a good point. I forgot about considering people who only like certain types of music. (Darn those picky bastards.)

Well if they're so picky, then why not just take the time to listen to bands and choose the ones they like? That's not hard. And people that only like one type of music don't like all of it most of the time. Why not read reviews of the band saying they have a certain sound like something instead of just labeling them that?

Labels are unnessecary because it only requires more labels, including to the people that listen to it. Rate the musician, not the genre, and you get rid of the discrimination. Bam.

I get what you're saying, and it makes sense, but I also understand why people have been labelling music the way they have.

With the development of new styles and diversified standards, fans can pick and choose what they want and like; however, to describe what one likes it's simpler to mention a specific genre (maybe list a few bands that fit it).

Saying something is rock is rather broad. Not all people who like rock like all of the sub-genres within it. I happen to like Celtic rock; it sounds nothing like "regular rock". People who like "industrial" won't necessarily like "punk" and vice-versa. By naming a style (though I don't care for labels, in general), it simplifies finding more bands in a genre you like.

It's just there's so much variety that it's hard to just pin one music type over another. Sure in the store you put them all under one big label, but you can call the sub-genre anything you want.

That's like calling all of the shades of blue (sky, navy, aqua-marine, etc) just blue, and they CANNOT be anything else.

At the same time, I don't care for labels in the sense that now a band is pinned to do only one kind of music and if they do anything else it alienates their following and they get called sell-outs. Labelling prevents bands from growing and becoming something new.

Cairoi, I totally see your point and the statement that you're trying to make. However, everything that Rogue just said nailed it. Bam. I couldn't agree more with her, and that's why I don't mind labeling as far as music is concerned. It makes it sooo much easier to talk about it and offer descriptions. And Rogue's analogy with colors is the perfect example. :p I love colors. But we all know that there's soooo many different colors out there. Same is applied to music.

I'm for lables, they're not going to attack me, molest me, or anything bad. They're just a subgenre of the genre. If you really into Acid Rock (Hendrix) and you want to find more artists in that same genre or like hendrix databases use similar genre, if the artists made albums together, toured together, compilations, covers, etc.

The lables just help people find music easier. If I was to look for a radio station where the genre was rock, I'd be ok with that, but there is a lot of rock that I do not like. Though if the station was more specific to a certain genre such as classic rock then I would listen to that station and thus opening me up to more of a genre I like; classic rock.

Though lables do have their downside, like once you've heard some emo crap you think you've heard it all. I will admit there are some semi-decent songs.

I only like labels for when I'm searching for similar musicians/bands to a band/musician I already know. Maybe I'm looking for the people who were their influences, etc.

Edit: The musician should make the choice on what their music genre is, not the public. Though of course the public is entitled to their opinion.

Edit2: How is this a game?

I agree with Rogue on this one, though I do think that the artist should decide what they are and not the public. Sometimes a sub-genre shift doesn't hurt an artist so bad... Manson started off Death Metal and is now called Industrial and he's doing just fine.

Labels serve a purpose to help people, but beyond that I think they are stupid.

I see what everyone is saying and you all have thought out opinions, however:

If labels did not exist, one could merely research the band and get a review which describes their sound. It wouldn't be hard or anything. Sure it might take a little bit more effort, but in today's society says less work is better. That is not true. This would prompt people to listen to what the music itself is like MORE, and none of this genre searching. Sure this topic isn't going to start a war, but I think people would find more bands if they just did a little more research.

It's fun to learn, cause KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!

P.S. Everything's a game, man. You win, you lose. Dude, this is the game we play with labels everyday. Dude.

I understand your point of view here Cairoi, which is why I'm not all "Well...you're stupid." **grins innocently**

But I still stand by my original thoughts. **shrugs** Point is, labels don't hurt us so much as they can hurt the actual musicians themselves, as Rogue also pointed out...but other than that...I just don't see anything wrong with them.
