I think this is a really good philosophical debate.
The opposite of hate is not love, it's indifference. Ellie Weisel, said this when he opened the Memorial for the holocaust. I thought it was interesting. Do you agree? why or why not? |

I disagree that a concept such as hatred can even have an opposite. Hot/cold, wet/dry, black/white, these are more tangible*. But hatred, love, happiness, sadness, anger, these are emotions, intangible abstract concepts that just don't have opposites. Can't really explain it better than that, unfortunately...
* Okay, so it doesn't fit dictionary.com's definition of tangible (at least, by my quick interpretation). But it's close enough for you to know what I mean, yes? DISCLAIMER: This post was an opinion. If you take it as me pushing such opinions as fact, I cannot be held responsible for the brutal beating you will soon receive and have agreed to by letting this line of text come onto your display screen. |

Originally posted by Tanis Rotheran Well, I'm not really disagreeing with you. OR agreeing with you. In my opinion, emotions are based soley on the person feeling them. While it's not a perfect opposite, it's different to the most radical enough angle to make them fuzzily opposite. I feel so different when I'm happy then when I'm mad it's like opposite. But then again, you can't have two opposites unless there the same. And Sad and Angry aren't the same. It's more of a trinity of emotions, that all share correlation between the three. Happy-Sad-Mad Hate-Indifference-Love Sad and indifference are kind of neutral ground between the two harbors of the mind. Sad is the down emotion without the energy. Indifference is the grey between hate and love. I think it's more of a trinity than an opposite thing, but then once more, it's my opinion and nothing more. Opinion is not fact. |

I don't think anyone could know the answer. As supportive as I am of science, I don't believe in some scientist telling me what I think and feel, so I really don't think there IS any facts on this subject. However, I don't think anyone's opinion could be wrong either. Like Cairoi said, emotions belong to the person feeling them.
Otherwise, I really have no opinion to offer here. Simply because I can honestly say that I don't think I've truly hated anyone. For simple reasons really. For one thing, I don't see hating someone as productive. I'm not saying that I'm always happy-go-lucky and people never piss me off, because that would be an outright lie. People piss me off...a lot. I just happen to see hate as something that will just build and build and cause more damage to yourself than anyone else really, and it just isn't worth it. **shrugs** So yeah, therefore, I don't think I can compare hate to love or indifference. |

I should have phrased this better. I think you guys are getting too caught up in the phrase..and not the idea. Think about the true meaning.
Love is a wonderful emotion. The worst form of hate is Genocide. Both can be prevented by indifference. |

I think that I may have been the only one who complete understood you Makura.
I'm going to have to disagree with you that the opposite of hate is indifference. Certainly, both can be altered by it, both can be stopped by it, but that is because it is middle ground. Okay, I'm going to be using math is here, and this is how I think it is: X=hate Y=indifference -X=love X+Y-X=Y So, that basically goes to show that love and hate will cancel eachother out, and that I can see no opposite to y, and that is effects the overall equation, assuming that everything is equal. Indifference can alter both, but they both can alter eachother, eventually canceling out, and leaving only middle ground. Just my two cents on the subject. Or was it three? |

Originally posted by Cairoi Makura, if you have a different interpretation of said statement of this, then you do. We didn't misunderstand it, we merely got from it that. And, no, hate cannot be stopepd with indifference. Example: The holocaust. Until WWII, many countries took an indifferent view to Hitler's action. Did that stop the hate? Another example: Emancipation Proclamation. Did making African Americans legally citizens (and law is indifferent) stop the hate? Look, indifference is one of the worst things to have, because it's transparent. If you're indifferent, then what's to stop the hate? |

Opposite of hate? Heres my outlook.
Hate is the Emotion used to dispise someone or something, you veer away from that "Thing" as much as possiable as well as loathing it. Now to me, Love is the opposite...heres why. Love is the Emotion used to care about something or someone, you are attached to that "Thing" as much as possiable as well as caring for it. Used the same sentence except changed the variables...but everyone has their own opinions. Edit: Major typos needed to be corrected (Last edited by Sajin Gorotto on 01-12-06 04:14 PM) |

Sorry there Vulkar. Bad day compunded with this caused me to esplode.
And Saijin, love is derived from care, while hate creates the feeling you describe. Thus, they wouldn't be really related, eh? Well, love comes from care to make care. It's the gift that keeps on giving. Hate only takes away. Emotions can't really be judged on one point because then it can twisted depending upon the one having the emotions and the situation they're in. |

Now that you guys point that out...it does make sense. So basically, the bottom line is, indifference is really the opposite of all emotions. For example, hate and love cause you to feel something and act upon how you feel. Whereas indifference is kinda like that nothingness...you feel nothing, you do nothing...kinda like being oblivious, only you know what is going on...
Is that what you guys are saying? |

That is what I am seeing, and it makes sense to me. Love and hate are both strong emotions, indifference is basically an absence of it. Makes sense that it would be the opposite of not only hate, but of love as well.
Either way, I think that indifference is overall far more destructive than either of the other two emotions can be. |

Originally posted by Elara I can say that to alot of my friends, sure I care for most of them, but im just indifferent most of the time because really and truely, I dont exactly care for them as I used to...So yeah, I agree as well as being indifferent is the complete oppisate of Love...I just wish there was a better word for it... Edit: Opps, I ment the oppisate of hate is indifferent...almost lost that (Last edited by Sajin Gorotto on 01-17-06 05:41 PM) |

Elara. My opinion is that actually Love can be the most destructive emotion to
have. Both for the person feeling it and for how it is directed. That doesn't mean that it IS, flat out, but that it CAN be. Like I love someone, that person is annoyed with their boss, I kill their boss because I love them and want them to be happy. Another great quote that almost everyone should know of that marks indifference: "The greatest of evils is when good people stand by and do nothing." I've always liked that quote. Part of the reason why I have the kanji for 'courage' tattooed on the back of my right hand. |

Originally posted by Cairoi basically I agree more with the idea of the trinity. I as a kid came up with the same idea. Now I guess I could say black is kind of like indifference and white would be when you feel everything and it is all confused...I dont think there are stait polar opposites, but this is as close as I can get.
