Meh, in my opinion, if there is a hell, this is it. I think there are actual branches of religion that view it that way too.

Ha, you know why this is hell?
Because we don't know ANYTHING about whats afterwards, and we all work so hard to be granted something better in the future when we really have no clue as to what we are working for. Religion must've spawned from the minds of thinkers who need some sort of concrete way of thinking in order to comfort themselves and others. They think they know whats beyond, and that knowledge makes them comfortable. Its the ones who think of Heaven and Hell as existing places that makes them not fear death as much as others. Its they're complete ignorance to the fact that nobody knows for sure that God is real, that Muhammad was greeted by actual angels or that Jesus was the son of the Creator. They tell themselves these farfetched things for comfort, which isn't a bad thing at all. I think if you don't have something to cusion your death, you'll be looking for a way to all your life and find there is nothing to find but a useless squabbling, a plague in your head that is born and dies at the same time as you do. I'm not a Christian, I'm not a Muslim, I'm not a Jew, or anything else. I'm not an atheist either. I'm lost is what I am. I choose not to believe these things due to their man made restrictions that grow more and more as time goes on. Maybe its rebellion, or trendy. But I still would not feel I would be living the best I can, even with this comfort their ideas have given this earthly world. I am a man born out of civilization. Civilization is born out of law. Law is born out of religion. God has told the Christians that murder is bad, but do I really need a divine power to tell me that taking another mans life is wrong? Why is it wrong? Not because I'll be damned to Hell, because I wouldn't want to die either. Why don't I want to die? I'm afraid of what is beyond. I picture is as an ideal area, but I am so unsure of the fact that that is real that I can't wholeheartedly believe that. I'm fueled by instinct, confusion, and peace. I know the difference between right on wrong, be it either religion or my own mind that tells me so. Influence is something that can never be avoided, and living in a country that has a majority of Christian followers, its hard to not think like a christian, because they've got it down: you live, you die, you go to heaven or hell. They've pummled this into they're minds so much that they "know" its real. But I don't know if it is, and deep down inside of them the answer doesn't exist either. So what can I do now? Just stop worrying about dying, and let it happen when it happens; but like THATS gonna happen. Death is always dancing around a healthy mind, no matter who it is. To not know where you are, where you're going, that my friends, is Hell indeed to me. Correct my contradictions if you find any. I'm ready for discussion anytime! (Last edited by J. your assumptions about the universe and about religion are no better or worse than those made by the religious. You say religious people are ignorant for believing in God, but what makes you any less ignorant for assuming he's not there.

Ignorance is not evenly allowing both sides of the argument. Ignorance pisses me off. Which leads me to my religious choice.
I don't really have one. My interpretation of God is the fact that our existence is. God is the natural "law" keeper, and there is no better law than natural law. God is everything, like what the bible says, but yet can he be if he is a man in a throne? I personally have had too many negative experiences in my life concerning the religious associations to full-heartedly believe in completly set laws of religon. Rather, I do beleive however, that there is another life. If our souls are real, then it is matter, to some degree, and you cannot destroy matter. A man once measured a human body and it lost I think .004 pounds, or around there. I think the soul is something real, and such it goes somewhere. But we cease life as we know it. We become something less, or more. I know not, but still I keep my mind open. As my favorite movie Dogma says, "Don't have beliefs, have a good idea." |

Originally posted by geeogree If thats directed towards me, which it looks like it is than all I have to say is that I am the last person you should be saying that to. I don't doubt that you've read the whole thing, but I can definetly see why someone would think about what you said. But I did explain myself and my ignorance in it, so you might have missed a part or something (it was a sort of long post, I'll admit). It was all about everyone, including myself, on the planet being ignorant to the fact that they do not know what is beyond and that God may or may not exist. I'm not saying he doesn't, I'm saying that I'm just not positive because I've never met the guy, nor have I died before... and I am calling everyone and their mothers ignorant to the great beyond because they are, unless they are absolutely hell bent on believing that God exists (which I also said was never a bad thing to think; in fact, I think I remember saying that it was better for them because they wouldn't be worrying about the things that nonbelievers do quite so much... in certain ways of course) I tried as hard as I could to portray this in a way that wouldn't have people offended. I dunno, I guess you've gotta read it when your in the right mood or something. It was sorta unclear, but I still stick by it. If theres still anything a bit cloudy, I'll explain it. |

okay, well then I guess I was just repeating what you were saying.
However, I don't believe it is impossible to know that God exists. Sure we may not be able to see God right in front of us, but the same goes for other things. I can't hold gravity and show it to you, but you know it exists. You can see the effect it has on things. Well, to me God works in the same way. He doesn't come right out and go "Hi, I'm God". God is seen in smaller ways. In more everyday things and experiences. |

I see. I guess I could see it that way. So, you see God on this planet working, and not just a Judgement for what comes later? I haven't looked at it like that. After all, religion isn't only about death, its about guidance. I guess because I haven't studied any religion much I dont' really have any knowledge on the topic, but those were my ideas, and as I said, I'm gonna stick to them until I can find another thing to believe in. Its just that reading the Bible cover to cover seems like such a huge task, and that I can't get my hands on any other works that deal with anything else. Except the Torah.
Haha, I gotta remember, I've got about 65 years to do all this stuff still though... |

You think you've got 65 years, but you may not.
As for the Bible, most of what is really worth reading is in the New Testament (the second half). The first half is a lot of boring stuff . Just my opinion though. As for learning about other religions, I believe www.religioustolerance.com or something like that [checks].... that works, but it goes to .org.... whatever |

yeah, it's .org
I've been recommending that site for awhile now, it's very useful and so far it seems very non-biased. Though, for those wanting to learn about Discordianism, I recommend this site. |

fair enough...
I looked around it for a while and it did seem very un-biased. There weren't any accusations or false statements or anything like that. Everything seemed to be pretty reasonable and at least partially documented. And the things that were story or possibly untrue, they admitted that those things might not be true. Quite impressed honestly. |

I dabble.
I mean that. I've taken bits and pieces from many different religions, many different philosophies and beliefs and incorporated them into something unique to me as a person. I do indentify strognly with Celtic Druidry however and am studying that whenever I can. Not nearly as much as I'd like to but I try. Eventually I'll have the funds to get the books I need and I'll start reading them. |

I am seriously starting to lean towards Wicca. It sounds fun, and the religion isn't hateful or discriminatory. Also, I wanna be a little odd... Well, odder than I already am =P

Originally posted by geeogree Yeah, that is what I love about Discordians, they will readily admit (as venomouslobster has said many times) that their religion is a parody of itself. I am an athiest, I do not beleive in god, I do not beleive in magic, in all honesty i don't beleive in anything. I beleive what sience has to show, human's and all other life evolved from singal cell organisms, and I beleive that when you die your body rot's in the ground, I do not beleive that our spirits go elseware. Humans do not have spirits, they have personalitys and when you die your personality die's with you. I hate christianity not because it has stupid beleifs (even though it does) but because i hate that christians are always trying to convert you to their beleifs. I hate that religions like satanism and wicca are so misunderstood, my brother is a former satanist and his ex is a wiccan so i understand the basics of both religions and i thing they have better beleifs than other religions like christianity. Now let me clarify some things before i get any acusations. First of all I am not a goth or an emo or an anarchist or any of that shit and I don't hate the govornment, i'm actualy a very avid conservative. Second of all even though i don't have a religion, I have vary high morals, I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't do drugs, and i plan to keep it that way.

I can only correct you by saying that you believe in yourself, believing in nothing would be life in catatonic sleep. This reminds me of an Albert Einstien quote that goes something along the lines of "There are two ways to live life. You can either believe that there are no miracles or that everything is a miracle."
You're missing out on a lot by not believing in anything. It kind of seems to make you lack personality, which I don't think dies with you because of the memories of people around you and any recorded moments of your life. If you really don't have anything besides yourself, it doesn't make sense to have opinions about anyone else's choice of religion. Also remember that Christianity is not suppose to be a unified wave of belief, but a multitude of individuals carrying out God's will. Another thing that kind of bothered me was your (over)use of the word 'hate'. I won't tell you what to believe in, but I will suggest that you listen to System of A Down, Dream Theater (particularily the album Scenes From A Memory), Shadows Fall, or even Rush, and then think about how your way of life compares. And to all who are annoyed at georgee, I have full respect for him for being that opinionative. He adds color to this board, especially this forum. |

I apologise for being so cynical (I was on a bit of a rant), Van Rhanell, you are right about quite a few things, but I think you mistook my meaning, I meant I do not believe in anything as far as the afterlife is concerned and i do not believe in a creator. I do believe in myself and others and I am quite happy for the life i lead, as well as just the fact that I'm alive at all. I am happy for every day that I live as well as everything i get to experience in my life. But thank you Van Rhanell for your polite response, even though I was ranting.

Im not trying to convert anybody im just saying what i believe in and if anybody has something to say to that, then thats there opinon. The Father the son and the Holy Spirit-which i believe is in everything. God is everywhere you just have to have some faith. |

Hmmm... suprised I actually missed this thread.
Ok. Since I'm too lazy to read through everything, I'm just gunna jump in here. I would like to believe in God and stuffs, or something, but my mind has like a logic/scientific block that prevents me from believing such things. Like there's a scientific explaination for everything. Which really bothers me. Oh well. Bastards. |
