Originally posted by True Flight That's another thing I like about my religion. In the last days you are judged only by your actions, not by your belief. When you die, then sure you go through the whole heaven/hell thing based on what you believe, but rather than stay there for an eternity, you are taught what to believe, and then you go go to heaven. Then, in the last days, after the tribulations, Jesus comes. Everyone is ressurected, and Christ rules over us for 1000 years. Then comes our final judement, where we are placed in one of three kingdoms, based on our actions Celestial(the best), Terestial(not really the best, but somewhat good), and the telestial where all the murderers go. That's just my opinion on the subject. |

Should I reply to this..?
I know that it's impossible to prove the existence of any deities either way. Can't prove they're there, can't prove they aren't. I believe, as some know, that there isn't a god, but will accept that I could very well be wrong. I feel that religion, while bringing many bad things, has brought an equal amount of good to the world, and so long as people don't try to convert me I don't care who or what they worship. As for my family, for the curious... My mother and stepfather are pagan (mom says she's not entirely Wiccan anymore, I never bothered prying the details out of her), my grandmother that lives here is Christian (more specific, I do not know)... what a mix, what a mix... |

I can top that I think. My great grandmother is a Jehovah's Witness while my great grandfather is an Atheist... perhaps that was why they spilt, but yeah, I find it hilarious.
I'm Pagan, my mom is Lutheran, dad is just Christian (never baptised actually), two siblings are Catholic, the oldest is some form of Christian. Mom's family is Lutheran, my dad's is "Christian" with the exception of my aunt and her family which are born again Christian Bible thumpers. ... most of the family doesn't know about me, at least the adults. |

Man, you guys have it badly.
As far as I know, most of my family is strictly Christian. Not sure about my dads side of the family though, not sure if they're anything for the matter. |

This again?
Well I can say Christians do things differently, most Christian Church's at least. Like "Youth Group" and things like that, I'm pretty sure most Catholic's don't get involved with those kinds of things. So in my opinion, yes Christianity and Catholicism go together like peanut butter and jelly, but Catholicism seems more laid back about things. I can also vouce (having been to so many Church's) that Christianity highly focuses on Worship (singing, praising, the music, etc). That's one thing I never liked about Church. I was christened a Christian. I went to a Lutheran church for a while when I was VERY young. But then I realized that my mother practiced tribadism and I found that it would've been impossible to be a follower of anything christian with such bizarre upbringings. Ha. Look up tribadism and you'll see why.
As for myself, I practice a gradually formulating idealism. First rule, just move with whatever you've got and pick up what you need on the way. Want something? Set it as a goal. Can't get it? Move on. Have a positive outlook on everything. Emotional outbursts lead only to embarrassment. Stay cool as a cucumber and if shit comes flying at you? Shrug it off and kiss the ape that threw it at you. Someone wants to be your enemy? Try and be their friend. They're not into that sort of pansy friendship bullshit? Thats the way it flows, don't let them be too much of a dam in your river. Walk with sleepy eyes and dreamy thoughts and share them with others. Just stay bright, accept, don't argue, skip, write, dance, laugh, and flow past the jeers and into whatever your heart desires. When I die, I picture heaven as a sea. You've gotten past the river, you know all about your surroundings, and something bigger awaits you later on. I say all this because this is what I found what works to make me as happy as I can be. Its no religion, and its barely philosophy. Just thoughts that work for me... |

there's far too many beliefs in this world. too much fear put into them too. like do blank and go to hell. do blank and it'll come back X amount of times worser. dont do blank and blank will happen to you. obey blank you'll be sorry. it's okay if you do blank as long as you apologize and ask for forgiveness. you cant celebrate blank holiday because it's a man made holiday, or your god didnt invent it. you cant eat blank on blank week. on blank day, you are to rest, because he rested. blah blah blah blah...
if you dont believe in what i believe, you'll go to hell! let's go to other countries and save the savages, and if they dont listen, we'll kill them. in the name of god i have vanquished the non-believers. if you're gay you have sinned. sex is only for procreation. obey thy father and they mother. blow up the heathens along with yourself and you'll be rewarded with 40 virgins in heaven. FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR..... why cant there be one that says try to do good or something, not because you'll be rewarded or punished, but because it's the right thing to do. The idea of confessing anything is ludicrous...
I've got Root Beer... Anyway, the idea of religion isn't to force people into believing, or scaring them into believing... The idea of a religion is to give guide lines to help you be a better person, but that doesn't mean you have to follow all the rules and confess and go to church and stuff... You don't even need to be part of a religion to help people and commit random acts of kindness, people shouldn't have to be frightened into helping one another... And when we die, we're probably just gonna rot in the ground, all you can do is try to be the best person you can with the time you have on this planet... You can't get to Heaven on roller skates, cause' you'll roll right past those pearly gates... Sorry, just had to say that. |

the only thing i dont like about the main streamed religion is their rules. if someone goes up to you and says, i believe that the moon is made out of cheese, and there are 50 million persons behind me who too believe it. now sir, do you believe it too, or do i have to kill you? THAT'S INSANE! but it's true... millions of ppl have been killed because they dont believe what others believe, and that's the real shame of religions. why does it have to be like that?
like why ppl dont like jews. supposibly jesus is the guy who will save everyone. the jews didnt seem to think so, and so didnt the romans. it wasnt only the jews who killed him, the romans helped too, but no one seems to hate the romans. and plus, most ppl seemed to have forgotten that jesus was also a jew at one point. then there's the catholics and christians. it's practially the same religion, except for some differences. they hate each other! it doesnt make any sense. then there's the whole, buy your way into heaven. martin luther didnt like how the church was doing things like that so he spoke against it. what happened, he got excommunicated because of that. all i'm saying is that... ALL THIS CRAP HAPPENED A MILLION YEARS AGO! how the bible was made and things like that. why are ppl still listening to the rantings of ppl who lived a million years ago? i'm not saying anyone is stupid or anything like that but look at it carefully. i mean, you're seriously going to listen to the same ppl who believes that the world is flat, and you'll fall off?! or that the earth is the center of the universe? think about it =/ i'm not trying to change anyone's opinion or anything like that, i'm just saying they were crazy back in the olden times, so why still cling onto their twisted beliefs? especially when it was made to kept the ignorant masses under control, and to keep the king in power by saying he's a decendant of god, or god has personally chosen him to be king. it's propaganda made millions of years ago for the ignorant masses. we're not living in such a time like that anymore. look at all the mid-eastern countries if you dont believe what i'm saying. like how they keep their women under control with their religion or how they cover their women with religion. again, i'm not saying anyone is stupid, i'm just saying look at the patterns and the times of when your religion was made, and the rules your religion have. like how you are to only worship HIM and only HIM. or how you're supposed to obey your father and mother, because the mothers and fathers wanted to keep you oppressed. martin luther questioned authority, and the church is teaching you to NOT question authority, but to blindly follow it to your grave. how can you believe in something that tells you to respect others, yet it dismisses others who are different, like gays. or Souls, and how a black man has no soul because he doesnt believe in the same god you do, so therefore he must be killed. or the whole, if you dont believe in god you'll go to hell. the world is a vast vast place, how can this ONE religion be true? why is the devil punishing "wicked" people? i thought the devil was wicked himself and loves to do evil things, so why would he punish those like him? that makes no sense. how big is this "heaven?" i'm sure there's no one, not even god himself can keep track of all the trillions of souls who have died and gone to heaven. then there's the whole holidays like easter. it's being dressed up to be about candy and fuzzy bunnies to attract the kids so they'll stay within the religion. or santa clause will give you presents if you're a good boy and listen to your parents, whom ultimatly teaches you things about god. i can go on and on for days... but again, i'm not saying anyone is wrong. i'm just saying look around you and think for yourself. I am an Athiest.
Catholics/Christians/Jews/any-other-religion-that-believes-there-is-a-heaven: Is there any reason, excluding hope of course, that someone would believe that there was some sort of Heaven? This is a question I pose to you. To me this is a ludicris thought. And honestly, for what reason other than beign good for fear of punishment, would there be a hell? I believe we create the world for ourselves by any means we can, and suffer no consequences other than the mental and physical, from our actions. Except in some occasions the presence of moral guilt. |

Xeios: and what is wrong with giving people hope, or scaring them into not doing things that might hurt themselves

I never meant that there was anything wrong with it. I am just stating a simple reason why I don't believe in religion. I think It's not right to have people believe in false hope. False hope is cruel, even if the person believing in it does not know it to be false until the last moment of life, it is still cruel.

you think it's cruel that a belief in an afterlife might make grief after a death easier on someone.... or the fear of death is lessened?
I personally like the reasurance that when I die that might not be the end for me. Avatar: I read a lot of what you said.... and it didn't make a lot of sense. Sorry. You generalized things too much, and assumed a lot that wasn't true. You need to get your facts straight. |

Well, yes, I chose not to believe in anything because it gives me more hope knowing that I won't be disappointed in the end if there is nothing. And if I go to hell or some sort of eternal punishment for it, tough shit, I'll have to deal with that then.
And I really dislike the fact that every creation we modern day people take into effect as truth has been marked as evil by the catholics and christians. For example: The earth is round, Earth is not the center of the universe, Evolution is practically true, the missing links stop us from being able to prove it thouroughly, Sex is not bad for you if not kept until marriage, masturbation is healty. |
