Words Given.
by: T. Moore This takes place before the first two parts. (Quiet Words..., and Words not Spoken) Almost like a prolog. But it was just written out of order. --- Detron walked down the hall of the palace his pace was easy, but hurried. He did not want to be late and miss the council’s decision. "If it wasn't for that blasted human at the gate," he thought to himself angrily. Detron quickly rounded a corner. He wanted to get there in time, wanted to know what the council had decided upon, and if the whispered rumors were true. Rounding another corner he passed through a door and entered a waiting room. Inside the brightly lit and comfortable room was an odd assortment of people. A number of men, humans, stood to one side. They each wore a breastplate and an insignia of their knighthood in the human nation of Darvain, and a few other human nations. Standing apart from the humans was a group of his own kin. Unlike the humans, the elves were not chatting away about matters unimportant, but discussing the grave situation at hand. As Detron entered the room fully, he became aware of a few more in the room. Leaning against the wall to his left was a beautiful elven maiden wearing black leather armor and carrying two swords at her belt. Her glossy black hair was tied back, leaving her fair skinned face open. The way she stood gave her the impression of a blade poised to strike. She was beautiful. Across from her, almost obscured by the knot of elves, was another human. He leaned upon the staff in his hands, but his black hair was yet untouched by gray. He wore the heavy robes favored by wizards, in a deep blue hue. Detron thought it odd that the wizard's tower would send someone so young to such an important meeting. Usually it takes wizards decades to develop their art; and usually the older the wizard, the more powerful. It didn't seem to make sense. Detron moved to the group of elves. He recognized one of the members, Leonar'thal, the grandson and apprentice to a famous bow master. Young and enthusiastic, but lacking experience. Detron gave the young elf a nod, then asked the group at large, in their native tongue. "Do any of the humans speak our language?" One of the blade masters to Detron's right gave a short, quiet laugh. "They probably know ten words in elvish combined. A few tried to wish us a good day, but instead said something not worth repeating." Detron smiled. "So if this meeting is so important, why involve the humans at all?" Leonar'thal spoke up in a quiet voice. "This is a dilemma that faces all of us, Humans and kin." "True," Detron conceded. "But lets hope that the council lets us elves do what ever it is that needs to be doing. Humans have a tendency to bungle and bluster. While we elves...." Detron never said what elves were, because he was distracted by laughing behind him. Looking behind him he saw that he had not seen the last figure in the room. Seated in one of the many chairs, he was to the right of the door wearing loose fitting leather pants, boots, and a chain shirt. He wore no emblem of knighthood or rank, but he did carry a large sword across his back. His brown hair was pulled back into a braid, and his face sported a blood red beard. His gray-blue eyes watched Detron. Detron looked back at the human for a moment, then turned back to the group of elves. "Who is that one? He doesn’t seem to be a knight or a noble." "He's not," said Leonar'thal. "I asked the others, they don't know who he is; but they know he is neither a knight, nor a noble. They seem to think he is a mercenary." Detron, for a moment, was shocked, then shook his head. The humans were going to trust some sell-sword? It seemed to be a knew low even for them. Detron was about to say something more when the doors to the chambers opened. The various kings of the human lands were seated at a large circular table, along with the elder council of the elves. Before the guards sent out to gather them had said anything. "Come in!" was called out by one of the kings. Detron was shocked at the lack of ceremony shown by the human. Stunned by the sudden events and the bellowing of the king, those in the waiting room hesitated for a moment. The only one who moved was the man sitting by the entrance, walking calmly past the knights and elves he walked into the council chambers. Everyone else shortly followed. Once in the chambers, Detron saw that the assorted leaders we not the only ones at the table. Three clerics of Elinisstra, The Mother of Dawn, were sitting amongst the royalty. Two were human and one an elf. Each of the knights sat next to his sire. The elves arranged themselves by rank to the side of their council. The wizard sat by next to another older, and probably more powerful, wizard. The elf maiden sat by herself with three seats separating her from the next person. The massive human that had been seated by the door seated himself in the same fashion as the maiden. One of the kings stood, his hair was silver, including a well trimmed beard; but he moved easily, and as he leaned on the large heavy table Detron was amazed at the apparent strength in his shoulders and arms. "We all have a dilemma," he said in a deep, powerful voice. "There is a danger that threatens us all." The king straightened up gestured to the three clerics. "The children of the Dawn Mother have divined that all the recent events are connected, from the orc hoards moving across the planes of dust, to the armies of Grend forming, to the reports of demons being sighted. All of these are connected, but how, and by what, they cannot yet tell. Something is guiding these events, and we need to know who, or what, and why." Detron wanted to ask what is to be done, but knew he was not yet allowed to speak, and the look on the faces of the others told him that he was not to interrupt this human. "So this council has decided that, because we are all threatened, we all shall stand together," the king continued with a look around the table. "We shall send out a small party to investigate the source and another party to investigate the stories of demons. Each kingdom and people shall be represented in this enterprise." The king paused to let this sink in before continuing. "The assembled knights here and a selection of elven warriors are to investigate the reports of demons. While a smaller group of selected people is to try and discover what is behind everything." "Excuse me your majesty," interrupted a knight quietly. "But why are you sending the larger force to deal with things out of fairy tails? Would it not be more prudent to send a large body of knights to investigate what is pulling the strings, rather sending them to chase shadows?" The King who was standing stared hard at the knight. There was a force behind that gaze that seemed to pin the knight to his seat, and sitting to the side Detron was only glad that the king was not looking at him like that. The king spoke slowly. "No, Sir Knight it would not be prudent to send the large body of knights to investigate the cause. Such a large group would move too slow and draw too much attention. And you will not be chasing fairy tails, you will be hunting demons. Trust me, Sir Knight, they exist." The king said the last words with volumes of cold fury. "Lord Charles is right," said one of the other kings hastily. "A large group will attract too much attention. No, we have each selected who will go, and where. Well, all except the wizard’s tower, they still need to talk amongst themselves." "We are only waiting until we can select the appropriate person," spoke the elder wizard. "One would not select a lance for a sword fight. We need to decide who is best to go." King Charles was standing behind his own chair again, and now with a patient voice he spoke again. "We understand, and as long as you have your pick ready to go tomorrow, we do not have a problem. We need to act fast." One of the elven elders stood. "Yes, we agree with the honorable Lord Charles. So, in light of this we purpose that those who can name their selection now. That way we can prepare our chosen." King Charles nodded. "Sir Anuldur," he said gesturing to the knight that sat next to him, "will go to investigate the demons." The knight nodded in silent acceptance. Each of the five other kings named their own knights to go with Sir Anuldur. The elven elders named five to go with the human knights. Three bow masters, and two blade masters. The elven cleric also volunteered to go with the knights. The young human cleric stood. She looked nervous drawing attention to herself, and as she spoke her voice wavered. "I think before the others are named that they are given the chance to volunteer. It seems right." She said the second part a bit lamely. King Charles nodded, and smiled warmly at her. "Of course." The cleric smiled in response to the king’s. "Then, I volunteer," she said breathlessly and then sat down. The King beamed at her. Then looked around the table. Detron stood. "I will go," he said solemnly. Leonar'thal stood, "I, too, wish to go." Charles nodded, then turned his gaze to the elf maiden. "Salline Silverleaf. I knew your father. He and I were great friends and had many adventures together. I still mourn his loss." Salline nodded her head slightly, and in a soft, but sure voice said, "Thank you, your majesty. I remember you attending his funeral. But to be honest, I did not know who you were." "The reason I asked you here is because I was hoping that the same fire burns in you that did in him; and by the look of you I'd say I'm not far off the mark," The old king said with a knowing smile. "What say you, daughter of Spiohalk?" Detron gaped. The daughter of fabled Spiohalk Silverleaf, and he was to travel with her on an adventure similar to those that made her father famous. "I will go," Salline said as she smiled. "My father told me stories about you, and the more I sit here the more I believe them." King Charles smiled, and then turned his gaze upon the large human in chain mail. "Jerrin Attos. I called you here because I hoped that you, too, have the same fire that burned in your grandfather. What do you say?" The man named Jerrin smiled. In a deep, powerful voice said, "I will go. It is only the right thing to do." King Charles smiled. "That is exactly what your grandfather would have said." Looking around at the other he said. "Those who are to go investigate the demons will need to speak with me longer. The rest of you are to meet here tomorrow, packed and ready to travel." And with that he dismissed Detron and the others. (Last edited by GuardianOni on 06-16-05 02:58 AM) |

I still want to know exactly what has been happening. Also, what is the cause, but I assume that you will get to that later on or something. Good story and nice intro to the characters, also good exposition on Selline and Jerrin.
My one suggestion that I do feel I should make: Setting. You don't really describe where the characters are as far as what it looks like. Perhaps Detron could notice the draperies or a tapestry or something as he is looking around... that is the only thing I felt needed saying. Write more damn you, now I want to know what the cause is! |

Wow, yet another piece of great work love. You really are a great writer. About the only thing I would recomend is the same as Elara, setting. It can be just as important as the description of the cha. Good job so far thought! |
