| Rand received the brands from his heron marked blade.
He was dueling The Dark One. And in a suicidal move know and sheathing the sword he was able to run the dark one through. This in turn melted the unbreakable blade, and caused the two engravings to brand his palms. There was some other things with the clouds, and a wound that won't heal... but that's something else. |

| The sphere question is up for debate, but the way I interpreted it was that it gave the ppl who when in the power to turn thought into reality.
And now that I remember Rand got the first brand when he was asleep, and somehow entered into the alternate world via the portal stone thing. I’m still not sure why that would cause it, but hey. What ever works. |

I still don't think you're fully getting the brand question however. You are right that he was asleep, and he was in the alternate world he entered via the portal stone. However, that wasn't the how he got the brand. IN that world Baalzamon came to him while he was on watch, (maybe he might have been dreaming) either way the physical manifestation of the Dark One talked to him, they had words, his sword suddenly became hot in his hand and branded the heron into the palm of his right hand.
