March 11, 2005 - As GDC came to a close today there was a late afternoon session entitled "Burning Down the House: Game Developers Rant." As the title implies, this assembly was meant to be an inflammatory airing of grievances by industry veterans. The panel consisted of Warren Spector, Greg Costikyan, Brenda Laurel, and Chris Hecker. Each speaker had a different take on what is horribly wrong with the state of game development.

Warren Spector

Warren Spector has been associated with a number of classic games including Wing Commander, System Shock, and segments of the Ultima Series. He is perhaps best known for founding Ion Storm in 1997 which resulted in the production of Deus Ex, Deus Ex: Invisible War and Thief: Deadly Shadows. Spector recently left Eidos to form a new independent studio in Austin. He claimed that the game industry a "hopelessly broken business". The reason behind this is a poor funding distribution model which gives publishers control over all steps of the game development process. Spector compared the current situation to early days of the American film industry when large studios controlled all aspects of development, distribution, and marketing movies.

Spector suggested that developers need to break this cycle by finding new distribution methods similar to what Valve accomplished by selling Half-Life 2 through Steam. As rumors of Spector's next project start to develop it will be interesting to see how he plans on bringing his game to the masses.

Honestly, I have to completely agree with Warren Inspectors statement here. Publishers are pushing the developers around.

EA? They've bought out multiple developers as of recently, and some of them they basically "destroyed" and are no more.

Microsoft? Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they were pushing Bungie around with Halo 2's development and altered the games to their "liking" and what "they" wanted.

Fore more, here's the source.

I also agree, except for about Microspoft.

If the date was later, a lot less people would buy Halo 2, and there were many years in between the two games.

Hey Xeo did you hear about EA taking the NFL liscence? No? Yeah, they bought out the NFL liscence and now they are the only company that came make NFL games, thanks for monopolizing the industry...whats next? The world?

I dont like all this stuff about the publishers getting roudy for whatever reason, I was seriously dissapointed that the next NFL games for 5 years will be the Madden series.

Of course, I read my magazines monthly.

Yeah, they've started a war with Vivendi, European companies, Sega and Sammy Studios, and probably more. Sammy returned the favor with signing an MLB deal for the next 7-8 years last I remember.

I don't mind that as much as I mind the EA deal, because I hate EA, but still, that just closes the door for many other developers out there, and so now we've got only 1 company that can put out MLB games, and also with the NFL, so they either do these games right ... or we'll be getting bad sports game (Not that I'd personally care, but that's probably the deal with the majority of the gamers out there)
