| It's incredibly painful to say. This one wounded my pride pretty deep.
I was doing a money management class with my clients for nearly an hour and a half, working with each person individually, having them count out coins, figuring out dollar amounts, and generally getting to understand that if they don't know this stuff people might try to take advantage of them, etc. It's not easy for them to understand this stuff. They're the sort that would pay for a candy bar with a $100 bill and not expect change. Still, I was able to get them to do/understand several things. Anyway, I wrapped a little early and popped in a movie, "Night at the Museum," after rejecting the two "Hannah Montana" DVDs that one of the clients kept handing me to play. Not TWO MINUTES into the movie starting (it was still in opening credits and not one character was shown on screen yet), the QA person for our regional center walks in. He starts into me about playing a movie. I explained they were doing money management and it was the end of the day. He asks the clients questions and is dismayed that they don't know who their counselors are at regional, especially when they look to me for answers. When I tell them, "Sorry, guys, I wouldn't know that," he turns to me and says, "Maybe you should work on that." Moving on, he asked the clients if they picked out the movie, and the one who didn't get to watch the Hannah Montana DVDs points at me and says, "She did!" That looks REALLY bad. At the same time, my DSP had gone to take her 10 and all the doors were opened while the QA guy was here, so my non-verbal, always-ready-to-elope client kept trying to walk out of the room. But since I couldn't use my stern voice in front of the QA guy I kept having to chase after the client and pull him by the back of his shirt to get into back in the room. The guy tried to ask this client some questions and was semi-annoyed that he wasn't answering him. So anyway the guy goes to my boss and mentions that clients shouldn't be watching movies at program. It was the end of the day and I was in the leisure room, where we usually have a movie going at the end of the day for the clients while they wait for their rides. So no movies ever now. When my boss happened by later, I asked her how badly I fucked up and she smiled and said I did all right and that he was very complimentary of our program. There was another indoor group he visited in our center that was doing freeplay with a couple clients watching a movie and others playing on the computers, and since it was "FREEPLAY" he apparently wasn't as put off by them having a movie on. THE NEXT DAY... at our Friday meeting, which we have in the last 20 minutes before clocking out, we hear from our boss that the guy got back to regional and said he was "disgusted" by us and that we weren't engaging with our clients at all. ... ... ... FUCK YOU, SIR. FUCK YOU SO HARD. He literally used the word "disgusted." As though we were having the clients writhe around in feces while we smoked in the corner or something. I've really stepped up at this job, which I'd always tried to remind myself was always meant to be temporary while I found something else. I've been killing myself with this job trying to make a difference. While others take their bowling clubs out, they'd just ask for all the shoes on the clients' behalves. I, however, was teaching them to say their shoe sizes and taught one of the non-verbals how to gesture his shoe size. That took weeks of work to get him to retain it. I turned the history and book clubs into actually reading together and researching. 
And I GODDAMN VOLUNTEERED to start a money management lesson. My boss found the fake money for me, and I started teaching it. No one was ever doing anything like that at the center. I also took over doing the laundry club, because no one wanted to do it. I figured that's a good skill to have and I've managed to get every single client to participate. My boss and the case manager have been impressed. THIS FUCKING QA MOTHERFUCKER JUST CAME IN AND TOOK A SHIT ON ALL OF IT. All because he walked in at the most opportune time. It makes me so fucking mad. It's going to regional that I'm a fuck-up. Bad enough I took a fucking promotion with NO PAY RAISE to run these clubs and steer them in a better direction. This company is NOT a non-profit because the people at the top are literally raking in millions a year. QA shit like this justifies us workers at the bottom not getting any raises, saying we don't deserve them. It's corrupt and there's too goddamn much liability with everyone stabbing each other in the back at every turn. I want out NOW. |
