.... Seriously we live in a society today where people are now becoming parents in the later 20s is the norm. Long before we were ever born people were crapping out kids around the ages of 14 anyway. I mean people were getting married at 14 too. Now we all have this need to say that it's too young to have kids. Amazing how the times have changed.

Either way I do agree a baby should be a baby for as long as a baby is a baby. Just like a teenager should be a teenager for as long as a teenager is a teenager.

However, society today commercializes off of teenage mothers as well. Making it a reality to other teenagers that having a baby can lead to your own reality show on being a teen mom and raising your kid. Which is stupid.

On top of that i'm a firm believer in if you're old enough to know the consequences of sex.. you're old enough to raise your own kid. Good luck spending four years of your life doing absolutely nothing... That's right you can't go to Ren Fest, you can't take your kid to Conventions, you can't go to concerts. It's a long break from everything you think is fun and want to share with your kid. At that age.. they don't know anything and will probably forget it anyway.

We also have a shitfuckton more people than we did way back then. If people wait longer to have kids, that slows our already-unsustainable population growth.

Also...

This is precisely why I think they should wait - they have absolutely no idea what they're getting into, and the majority of them can't financially sustain it even setting aside the huge inconvenience of children.

In fact, if I ever have kids (and if we're all lucky, that won't happen), I plan to tally all kid-related expenses, year by year. Then, when the time comes for the inevitable sex talk, I pull out the bill and some of the matching receipts. Not to demand compensation, you understand, just to show them proof of just how expensive it is to raise a kid so they have a more concrete reason not to fuck up.

To this family's defense, it looks fairly tight-knit between the parents and the children (and their children), so the burden of child rearing would appear to be evenly distributed. It's nice when families work that way at least, as opposed to the new parents having difficulties with their family and pretty much being stuck on their own.

Even though I can only tolerate my parents in doses (read: small doses), it would be a welcome mercy to have my parents be close to their grandkids, when I inevitably have children.

Looks like my family...

Slight exaggeration, of course, but, my sister was 19 when she had her second child (this is important because it is the second child that made her a grandmother.) and my niece was 16 with HER baby. My sister was 32 when she became a grandmother. Several years off from these people, but considering this sort of situation has been around me my entire life, I can tell you its pretty damn close.

People may have been having babies and getting married at 14 before...that may have been the norm...but shorter life expectancy, and fatality rates while delivering babies was also the norm. Society is changing for a reason (barring going into all of the specifics of politics, mind you.) But, people are opting to have children later in life because most, not all I digress, people can't function on their own until they're closer to their 30's. I'll tell you right now, I work my ass off. Always have. I'm still "at home" because I'm the one supporting my family, but even if I wasn't, I couldn't afford to live on my own right now anyway, much less successfully raise a child. I love my family very VERY much, but they're drains to "our system" and they're not teaching their children how to avoid the same outcome they reached.

I'm going to end the rant there, but this is one of the few departments that I'll be one of the first to step up and claim to understand what its like to be caught up in this sort of life. And y'all are right. The part about good luck giving up the things you love for so many years...and the expenses...oh goodness the expenses. I'm working my ass off SO much that I'm managing to get two nieces at a time through a community college, and MAJORLY supporting my great-niece. And that's just the tip of what I'm financially taking on, and there's STILL more that my sisters actually do. Its crazy, and just because you can physically pump out children, doesn't mean you're ready for the consequences.

With that said, I wish this family all the luck in the world and sincerely hope they're happy and well.

I don't think anyone can put it better than Katana did.

It's... well... it's sad that we cannot avoid this in our modern age of easily accessible birth control because parents don't want to teach their kids to avoid the mistakes they made.

And shit like "Teen Mom" and "16 and Pregnant" are NOT helping because it is glamorizing it. Then girls think, "Oh, if I get pregnant I can just try to get on a reality show."

... I got news for you, honey, those shows are not reality.

Never thought of those shows like that, but you have a damn good point. There's absolutely no reason they need to be publicized entertainment.

Kat, I can only hope you and people like you, get some kind of "thank you", every single day ideally. I think my family and growing up was a bit more fend-for-yourself taught. Maybe I'm just smack dab in the middle of selfish man stage haha, but yeah, I cannot even fathom going to those measures for others right now, or having a kid.

Almost hitting a bit close to home here on the subject, I've already got a taste of these things with my sister and her kid. No way in hell was she truly ready for it, she'll manage, ain't gonna be easy though and a toll like this hits everyone around them too, as my parents are feeling the stress and everything as well.

A little more information on this family: link

The story is a couple years old. They come from the UK. The grandparents, who were 14 when the daughter was conceived, have been split up for years.

It's not about the family from the first post, but since we've been discussing teen pregnancy, this video is relevant.

A Fox commentator says we should celebrate teen pregnancy (in the sense that young girls who get pregnant and carry to term, then adopt out their child, should be praised):

seriously?....there are more side effects from pregnancy I wouldn't even want to WISH on teenagers.

Speaking of Plan B. I did buy it from the RX before. XD It was quite hilarious. I got a ton of judgmental looks, but then my husband walked up with D in his arms and he was like "You ready baby?" The looks immediately changed to understanding. Talk about your double standards.

For once, I actually agree with Fox News. I personally believe that if you're having unprotected sex, you should live with the consequences. At the very least, have the child and adopt it to one of the thousands of needing couples who cannot conceive one of their own.

Even people who don't currently want kids and are using contraception, shit happens -- there is always adoption.

On the other hand, I wish that some people who aren't financially stable or mentally mature enough to rear a child would do the same. Too many druggie parents around where I live.
