Rep. Todd Akin, Republican nominee for Senate in Missouri, said in a television interview on Sunday that abortion should not be legal even in cases of rape because victims of "legitimate rape" will very rarely become pregnant.

Akin, a congressman who is running to unseat first-term Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., appeared on St. Louis' KTVI-TV to promote his campaign. He discussed his position on abortion, stating that he believes abortion is acceptable when the mother's life is threatened.

When asked to discuss his view on abortion in cases of rape, Akins state that "legitimate rape" very rarely results in pregnancies because women have biological defenses to stop themselves from conceiving.

"First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare," Akin told KTVI-TV. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

"Let's assume that maybe that didn't work, or something," Akin continued. "I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."

McCaskill responded quickly with the statement, "It is beyond comprehension that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape. The ideas that Todd Akin has expressed about the serious crime of rape and the impact on its victims are offensive."

Akin never clarified exactly what a "legitimate rape" consists of, nor did he cite any scientific examples to back up his statements that women rarely become pregnant in the case of rape.

Talking Points Memo points to a 1996 study published in the American Journal of Obstetricians and Gynecologists which sates that "rape-related pregnancy occurs with significant frequency." The study estimates that "32,101 pregnancies result from rape each year."

Recent polls place Akin ahead of McCaskill by 49.7 to 41.3 percent. The latest polls show McCaskill's numbers taking a large dive. The race's outcome could determine control of the Senate.

He later claimed to have "misspoke" but has not actually issued a real apology. This has also angered his supporters, who now think that he should give up the Republican nomination to someone else because he "blew" getting what should have been "an easy seat for us"... no outrage at what he actually said, just that it blew his election chances.

Yeah, I heard about this and felt enraged for about a second before I just laughed hysterically. I figure he's totally going to get reemed by the women's groups either way.

If I recall, under the bill they proposed, they would define it at "forcible rape"... meaning that all other rape (date rape, verbal coercion, statutory, etc) would not count. Their reason? To cut funding for abortions by the federal government.

I've just flipped from laughing hysterically to blood-boilingly enraged again.

Stop trying to chip away at women's rights, assholes!

I wonder how these Congressmen would react if the few women in Congress were pushing for a ban on Viagra.

I know it's not exactly equivalent, but it's not like a man can have an abortion, so I work with what I have available.

It would be like saying that if you, as a man, woke up feeling hazy and drugged from a drink you had the night before, discovered your rectum bloodied and aching, semen leaking out. You don't know what happened to you or even if it was just one man or several who have raped you. You took an STI test and discovered you have HIV or AIDS, then was told you can't get any assistance in your medical bills.

It's just rape and unwanted pregnancy don't quite translate to men.

I just feel that rape not only hurts women, but men as well. It's common to blame the victim, and say that "she led him on" or "she shouldn't have worn that or been there when she was." It's like saying, "Boys will be boys, and it's YOUR fault you didn't know that every man is an erection away from raping the next thing he sees."

I would hate to be a man in that regard. That you are automatically assumed as a predator. That your bad behavior is excusable because that's just the way you are and women should know that.

I've seen it happen in the military all the time. The girl wants it then turns around and goes to SHARP about how she actually didn't. Almost all cases are dropped if the other side of the story doesn't match up.

It also has turned into a group thing if there were other people there at the time. So everyone gets equally involved.

The problem with that, Rogue, is that most of these people are the same sort that would assume that them being raped is a physical impossibility.

They're kind of stupid is what I'm saying.

it's called being sodomized... not raped.

Edit: Which I think is the same thing just different word.

It's like calling Pepsi Coca Cola.

The Pepsi/Coke thing works actually.

And men can be raped... it's normally date rape, but it can happen.

Rape and sodomy are two very different things.

Sodomy can be consensual, as MANY people can attest (homosexual or otherwise), involving anal and oral sex.

Rape is forced/non-consensual intercourse, be it with a penis or other foreign object inserted into a vagina, mouth, or anus.

It would be like comparing Coca-Cola and Clorox. Both can be consumed like beverages, but one stings the throat and may involve calling in the authorities, ending with you having a rather traumatic experience involving them removing a fluid from your body. Whether that describes Coke or bleach is up to you.

Men can be raped just as easily as women. You don't hear about it much, but it happens more often than most people think. The big difference that we're talking about here is that women can get pregnant from it, whereas men can only be impregnated by a mermaid that just snorted lines of pixie dust freshly plucked off the back of a unicorn. In other words, it ain't gonna happen.

It just keeps getting better.

Now a Republican state senator from Tennessee says it's virtually impossible to contract AIDS from heterosexual sex.
