...in 4 billion years.
SOURCE NASA constructed a video of how it will all go down: LINK! (Last edited by Rogue on 06-01-12 03:17 AM) |

I bet we'll either destroy ourselves long before then. Or a cataclysmic asteroid impact.
Or pissed off aliens. |

Originally posted by Nelrith Yeah, and if Nostradamus is to be believed (excuse me... lol), mankind the world will end in 3797. But yeah, chances are humans will either cease to exist or will have evolved into something else long before that. I kind of wonder what it would be like for the two galaxies in that 4-7 billion period when it seems like the Milky Way and Andromeda are reforming and reshaping. |

Isn't this incredibly old news?
In addition to four billion years away. If we're smart, we'll probably have figured out some sort of solution by then. Of course, we're not, but maybe all the wars will lead to one as a side-effect. Either way, I'm not that concerned on account of it being four billion years away. |

Well, I don't know how old it is, but I'm guessing NASA will make any excuse they can for putting together all of the diagrams and videos for the possible ways this impact could go.
But seriously, what could it be like during that collision? So many worlds could be created and destroyed, civilizations on planets that suddenly developed life could rise and fall, they could form rich histories before their planets crumble to dust. It's just such a wondrous thing that none of us will ever comprehend. (Last edited by Rogue on 06-01-12 04:47 PM) |

It is technically old news, but what's new is that they have roughly pinpointed (and wow, I really hate the phrase "roughly pinpointed") how long until it happens and what the fate of our system will be when it does.
Before this, it was widely assumed that there would be a gargantuan explosion that would not only destroy most of everything within both galaxies but also spawn pastry-felines with the ability to poop rainbows. |

I did a double-take with that last sentence, Nelrith. Lol.
Seriously though, interesting... and yeah, it is mind-boggling to try and really comprehend it. |

I grew up on Carl Sagan...like...watched the Cosmos series, own both the original and the remastered version where some of the information is updated. I even read a lot of his books. If you want some interesting, badass knowledge, and just a good sci-fi read, I suggest y'all get on this guy. Although he's dead now, sad really...died too young...but still...
And since the 70's, Carl Sagan has been explaining this phenomenon of galaxies colliding, and what ours and Andromeda's could/will do. I'm not sure if this sort of info goes back before Carl Sagan, but I can tell you the news is at least as old as the 1970's. I'm looking for the segment about the collision now. Well, I'll look again after my nap. :p |

I didn't learn about Carl Sagan until recently, but he's my hero now. In fact, he's the reason why I changed my major from Computer Science to Physics. | |||

Huh, that looks pretty cool to be honest. Makes me think of Gurren Lagann
Too bad none of us will be around to see something like this happen, Nya~ (Although, the human race, or even the entire planet earth for that matter, probably will be wiped out by natural disasters, the sun incinerating us, or get blown to bits by a nuke) |
