OK, so I FINALLY saw the first season, and like every person who jumps on a fandom slightly behind the pack, I wanna talk about it excitedly and at great length while everyone else is probably over it already.

So who's seen it? Whadja think?

EDIT: And the show's theme song yields some magnificent covers and mash-ups of said covers:

I am so totally not over it. I LOVE the series and I think they did a fairly good job of adapting the book.

I actually haven't read the books, and at this point, I'm afraid to read them as I'd like to be surprised (was NOT happy about the ending to episode 9. I get why it happened that way, but DAMN IT, really?!). All the same, though, I'm happy to hear it's a faithful adaptation.

I like that I absolutely love some characters and completely hate others. Really makes me look forward to people getting what's coming to them (seriously, that Targaryen prince... fuck yeah).

Have you seen what this girl went to Comic-Con as this year (Caution: NOT SAFE FOR WORK): http://www.amberunmasked.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/charlesgrey_tumblr_sdcc_nakedcosplay.jpg

Holy shit!

But yeah, there are a lot of characters that you just love to hate. Like Cersei... I fucking hate her.

Who are the ones that you hate?

Cersei's definitely near the top, but Joffrey may be overtaking her. Pretty much all of the Lannisters other than Tyrion (because he fucking rocks) are on my hate list.

I was hoping the Dothraki would make it across the sea, think Joffrey was the one who sent the assassin, and then Khal Drogo would rape the shit out of him, but now...

I'm not really a fan of Daenerys, but I also don't hate her either.

After the Lannisters, I'd say Lysa Arryn is next in line for my hatred. I thought she was a crazy (not to mention fugly...) bitch with a weird, creepy son, and hated her immediately. While looking up something on the series, I accidentally spoiled some of her back story so I feel she's definitely earned my ire for a reason.

I was REALLY hating Sansa for a while there (well, more annoyed by her), but she might be redeeming herself now that she's woken up.

My favorite characters thus far have been Arya, Tyrion, Ned, and Snow.

Yeah, that is largely my same list. Joffrey is such a fucking prick... I love that scene where Tyrion bitch slaps him. And yeah, Sansa bugged the fuck out of me until she started waking up to reality... still not my favorite, but she's improved.

Daeny is one of the characters that I liked better in the book because she is a very internal character, and so a lot of the things that make her interesting didn't really make it into the show. She came across as... well... flat. Same thing with Bran.

In that moment, I knew I would love the fuck out of Tyrion.

I figured as much. Seems like Rickon was also left out. We didn't see him until near the end of the season, despite being mentioned a couple times in the earlier episodes.

I'm curious about Theon Greyjoy. I guess he's a ward/hostage or something, but I thought he was a Stark for the longest time.

I'm also loving Robb, but he needs more screen time too.

Yeah, he is a ward... but also basically a hostage. His father rebelled against King Robert and as part of the peace agreement Theon is made the Stark's ward since he's now the heir to the family. They talk a lot about the Greyjoys and the Ironborn.

Rickon is tied in with the Bran chapters... both Rickon and Robb never have chapters of their own. I believe that the Robb ones are all Catelyn's. But yeah, I really like how he has turned out in the show, and we should see a lot more of him next season.

I was just looking up Snow's sword, which is apparently called Longclaw, since it's been featured on Big Bang Theory. I love it, some one gave it a negative review because it obviously wasn't made with Valyrian steel.

But yeah, I wondered about the Greyjoys. While looking up something, and also being careful not to read anything for fear of spoilers, I noticed their sigil is a golden kraken. And I wondered. If the Targaryens had dragons and the Starks have direwolves (though I doubt Lannisters HAVE lions), since the Greyjoys apparently come from an island, do they know of a golden kraken?

I was also thinking about all the symbolism around the direwolves. When the Starks first find the puppies, their mother(?) had just been killed by a stag, which the direwolf appears to have attacked (or vice versa since they were both taken out).

Spoiler:
And that seems to parallel Ned and Joffrey/Cersei. Ned, a direwolf, was killed by the Baratheons, whose sigil is the stag, and yet his children to whom each of the pups went to, live on.

Also, regarding Sansa...

Spoiler:
Since she sort of betrayed Arya by claiming she didn't remember what happened, and with her determination at that point to marry Joffrey, her wolf was killed. To me, this symbolized her losing her title as a Stark. She's still alive, but not quite a Stark any more. Who knows? She seems to be coming around.

Haha, I'm such a dork.

I have yet to see this! I've been wanting to for a while now. My brother-in-law has the books and wants me to read them, but he's read them AND watched the first season, and he's advised me to watch first, then read as well.

But I LOVE these types of shows..."The Tudors." "The Borgias" "Camelot" all GREAT period pieces. Anyone who watches them for "accuracy" is dumb. But for entertainment? And "Game of Thrones" just always seemed to be right up my alley.

(Yes, I've ignored some of the posts before mine. When I make time to watch and understand what you guys are talking about, I'll chime in. Haha.)

Well, the difference between shows like The Tudors and Game of Thrones is that the later is a true fantasy setting... Westeros is not a part of Earth. However, Martin was heavily inspired by actual medieval history, and so you really do get to see the dank and dreary side of that period as opposed to the Medieval Times version.

About the spoilers... yeah, I totally agree.

It's been weeks since the last time I watched any of it and I'm still bringing it up at random over meals with Brandon going, "Other than Ned, Snow, Tyrion, or Arya, who's you favorite character?!" or "I wonder what they're going to do with Theon Greyjoy now" and so on.

Katana, I think you'd love Game of Thrones. It's definitely not based on history (especially since they have mythical creatures and such), but much of it seems more grounded in reality, like the politics and subterfuge of it all. Yeah, if you like "The Borgias," you'll probably dig the drama between noble houses and royalty in this series.

And, believe you me, I understand ignoring any of the above. You definitely want to go in fresh.

Curse me and my need to sleep, I missed it!

... now eBay is my only hope.

So, somewhat unrelated note, I got the first for books in a collector edition hardback set. Other people were bitching that it didn't have all five books... but honestly the fifth book hasn't come out in paperback yet so who cares? And I have it anyway. So now I have all the books in hardback, and I am happy.

The show's coming back April 1. Soooooo stoked.

I was watching one of those preview featurettes and discovered King's Landing is in Croatia and got super excited since Brandon's Yugoslavian (what's now Croatia) and has family there and we've been wanting to go visit (along with Italy and Greece since it's right in that region). Eeeeeee, someday.

I never get tired of watching that trailer. And I didn't know Brandon was part Croatian... neat. I hope they do like New Zealand did with Hobbiton and keep the King's Landing set intact for tourists. That would be so amazing.

But yeah... I want to go to Croatia now. It looks so pretty.
