So, I've decided to build my own website, from scratch. I want it to have blogging capabilities, and a way for me to post my work, both fineart and digital art, including the video work I'll soon be able to do.

I'm getting the funds together(yeah, I'm THAT poor right now) to buy my own domain.

I was wondering if there was anyone here with experience with this sort of thing? And if so, may I make you my new best friend(s) for a little while?

I go through godaddy.com for domain registrations. Very cheap and good stuff.

From there, my website handling skills have just gotten too rusty over the years so I don't know what else to say. You'll need a host as well somewhere and from there, maybe you can look into some free blog software to use for all of that stuff... not sure.

Unless you really know what you are doing or really want to take a very long amount of time to do it, I suggest getting some pre-made software to do this. I've tried to do this sort of thing before and quit after 120+ hours of work. It is super hard to make a quality site from scratch.

That said, I can help you if you still want to do it. However, site security is not my thing. I know PHP, HTML, CSS, and MySQL well enough to make a site that works, but not a safe one.

1and1.com and godaddy.com are good hosts to use. I'd recommend getting Dreamweaver if you build yourself and also get an FTP client (I use FileZilla) for other file uploads. Also, Photoshop and Illustrator are handy to have.

If making your own site, I'd also recommend either a virtual machine running a W/LAMP (Windows/Linux Apache MySQL PHP) server so you can test things before putting them live on your site. I run a WAMP server on a spare drive and use it for testing and dicking around with code before putting it on my site.

I'd be happy to provide help as needed. Just PM me or email me or post here.

Unless you have good programming (read: security) skills, I'd get something like WordPress or something similar. Really, making blogging software is not that difficult, but languages like PHP are amonst the most vulnerable to hacking, which is a bitch.

Most blogging software these days have plugins, so you should be able to find all the functionality you want, and modifying layouts shouldn't be *too* much of a problem.

And Lord Alexandor is right, it takes a while to do a full website from scratch (including blogging software). I know that I'd charge someone a pretty penny for it ^^

Fortunately, free blogging softwares are pretty high quality and updated frequently (and the updating procedure is stupidly easy. Nothing like in my time).

As for domains, most registrar are fine. You'll normally be looking at $10/year for mosts domains, unless you go for something fancy (ie: something that's not common, like country domains - .ca .co.uk etc)

The problem here is the submitting and blogging parts.

I could very easily make you an attractive looking website, but I only know original html. If you want, I can help you where you need, like find some small things, or point you in the right direction.

But blogging? >.>

I'd use 000webhost.com

It's good enough for your problem but if you want a forum with your blog you may be stuck.

They have $0.00 hosting or premium hosting(witch is a paid service)
