Sweet tooth returns in the ultimate ass-kicking car combat experience

I never played Twisted Metal. Clowns scare me

I feel bad for you. Twisted Metal was one of the best flagship games in Playstation history for good reason: it was killed or be killed while driving around as your favorite character. Each having their own strengths and weaknesses.

So what was the story?
Grab a car, kill everyone, and get any wish you want at the end. There is always a catch. As for this game's story, it's not really known. A lot of people don't like Calypso from the old Twisted Metal games. But I personally hope he somehow makes a return. After all, this isn't Twisted Metal 6, this is "Twisted Metal", so this is going to be rebuilt from the ground up.

Is it all clowns? I am scared of clowns
Well, there is the Sweet Tooth faction, the Doll face, some demon, and some religious faction as far as I know. Later down the line there should be more factions you can play with.

Wait, Factions? I thought the Twisted Metal games had a "Pick a character and roll with that one vehicle?
Yeah, that is what I thought too at first. But the series has taken a new turn; hopefully for the better. The factions play a role in "Teams", and choosing vehicles while in the faction changes what your strengths and weaknesses are. For example the Helicoptor, having high mobility, is very weak against attacks (So is the motorcycle, except it has an amazing special attack where you toss a flaming chainsaw at your opponents). So now it's not the character, only the vehicles.

Wow, this game looks like it has some shitty graphics
1 Who cares
2 The gameplay is Alpha, Eat Sleep Play still has plenty of time to polish the game up
3 Gameplay > Graphics

Isn't David Jaffe also the same guy who helped made God of War?
Yes

Pre-Rendered Cut scenes?
No. All live action. Which is kinda odd if you ask me. But hey, it's Twisted Fucking Metal.

This looks FREAKING AMAZING!!!

I loved the Twisted Metal games, my favourite being World Tour (I think this was just the second game, but got an extra subtitle in Europe for whatever reason, not entirely sure).

Kind of a shame I probably won't see Axel or Twister... My favourites.

But the faction thing sounds like a pretty fun idea for multiplayer. Especially nuke, looks incredibly involved.

Here is what I am hoping. As far as the faction deal goes; what if Axel were to join one? Or Twister? Minion? Etc?

Only one way to really find out.

Although I am afraid of the way they are going to milk this product. Not to say I am afraid of DLC or anything. Maps are fine, characters and factions I will not approve of and won't purchase. (Only if they are cool enough I guess)

if there is something that should return to this game is the fact that Rob Zombie music should be in this game.

But I know it won't because Rob Zombie came in when EA bought the Twisted metal franchise and wasn't developed by David Jaffe. Thus; it's highly unlikely.

But I can say that one of my favorite Twisted Metal games was in fact the Third one...by second place. Mainly because of Rob Zombie and Pitshifter

The 2nd one tops them all in terms of gameplay and replayability. The first one is 3rd place, and the 4th one takes the copper!

E- Oh and I wasn't a real big fan of Twisted Metal: Black. It was just something about it that I did not like about the game. Fun fact is that TMB is the only game on the PS2 to use 60FPS gameplay. I thought that was a pretty neat trivia.

New trailer. Showcasing the Grimm motorcycle, it's abilities, a new boss(es) and more importantly.

Demo came out and I got a chance to play it. Thankfully it's a realy good demo.

ONLY ISSUE I HAVE: Controls.

It's hard to explain. Imagine hitting the boost button the same you do with the way you turn your vehicle. Imo it's not really a smart move but other than that I enjoyed the demo.

E- Best way that I can explain the controls is that every single button on the Playstation controller does something. And combining the two does something new. Like jumping and whatnot.

It's crowded as all hell and a lot of people are complaining about it. Although you can switch to the classic Twisted metal Scheme; you will not be able to do some of the things you would do without it. Like quickly turning, laying down mines, traps, etc.

But once you do wrap your head around the controls. The demo was FUN as hell to play.

Perks:

- Soundtrack is actually pretty good. Surprised to hear a new song by Rob Zombie making a return.

- Addicting gameplay. Just when you thought you knew one map. You accidently break something open to discover something new. A trademark in the Twisted Metal franchise making a return. Yet again. Very fun to play split screen!

- Vehicles in Demo are all available! Except for Axel. But other than that. Everything is available right from the get-go. You just get one map to kill on!

- Nice variety of weapons and specials! Just when you thought you had one special! Some (Maybe all i'm not sure) have got two specials! Each completely turn the tide of the fights you will be facing.

Cons:

- Controls are extremely complicated. Just when you thought fighting games are difficult to master. This game takes the cake. When you first pick this game up; you will get owned in even single player on not knowing what you are doing.

- Sound. They are using rehashed sounds found in games like Warhawk and Unreal Tournament. You'll know what I am talking about if you played those games. But it seems like a cheap way out on having the team that made this game do this.

- EVERYTHING IS FUCKING COMPLICATED: The UI is...I dunno how to explain it properly. But not only should you focus on the screen. But you also need to focus on the maps as well. Everything is being thrown at you all at once and it's weird. Like it's too much information shown on your TV all at once and it's hard to overlook it. Oh look, I can see people shooting at me on my map, I got 25 points of Damage for doing a missle attack, and there are 14 arrows pointing at the bottom of my screen because they are behing me. Oh look, a big text popped up saying this person is in the lead. Oh LOOK! It's also flashing on my screen that he is in FRONT of me. OH LOOK!!!! Three people are sniping at me and I can see them targeting me ON MY MAP. See? Lot's of information being poured out all at once.

Other than that I can say I had fun with this. And even if this game gets bad rap. I'll still play the shit out of this game.

Official Bitmap Review

First off. Let me just say that I think it's obvious I love the Twisted Metal series. But the entire time when writing this I am going to go outside the fanbase and give the best review I can possibly give for this game, honest, truth, and seriousness.

Graphics

First off, this is not a game that is going to WOW you in terms of graphics. Using the same Havok engine that was made famous by games like Skyrim, Starcraft 2, etc. This game was absolutely not made for beauty. But the technical side of things makes this game shine. You can throw your car inside a building and debre falls, or you might find yourself going toe to toe with someone and collisions are amazing, or finally, you might find boss battles actually shatter the world around you. Sure, looking at it up close it might not look pretty. But when you see 50 missles flying to you while you are going 150MPH it looks damn amazing.

Presentation

This is a videogame meet's B-movie style horror and comedy. Nothing more, and nothing less. Although the multiplayer is just about everything you can hope for in terms of old school and whatnot. It's everything awesome mixed in with it's own cheesiness. The story itself tries to take itself seriously in every way shape and fashon. But with holes in the story, it just does not add up but at the same time it delivers in a good single player experience. Mentioning the story; it's the same as always. Twisted wishes and Twisted results. Reminder: You get what you asked for.

Video is spoiler. But not by much. Sweet tooth's story is the first easy act. But still. Watch at your own wish.

One thing that is disappointing is that instead of traditional Twisted Metal you only have three contestants this time around. But I will get to that in the last part of the review.

Gameplay

This is that part of the review where I rip on the controls. But honestly. It's one of those games where it's hard to pick up but once you play a few rounds it suddenly becomes natural. I'm not even joking here. Once you first pick up this game you are going to have the hardest time moving your car around. But after playing against bots a few times. You somehow get the hang of things and you realise that you now know how to drive!

That is...once you learn how to fly. Or ride a motorcycle. Or drive an 18 wheeler. Each car has it's own controls. Well, I kinda take the last part back. Its either you are driving, flying, or driving a big freakin truck around. Each has it's own skill and controls.

BUT! It's hard to grasp around, yes. But once you get it you got it. It immediately becomes natural and balanced. Once you get used to driving one vehicle its natural. Controls are hard to pick up. But mastery is key. And thankfully mastery is not that hard once you pick this up.

Overall

There are a few things I do not like about this game. Beating the game on normal; the only issue is the 2nd boss and the racing parts of this game. Yes, I said racing. You will learn to hate the racing part of this game and for good reason too! A big tip; is to pick a fast car and learn to use shields and to drive like hell.

The story; I felt was great and all. But I would have loved to see more contestants enter; this isnt the case. We have three people fighting and a preacher. You'll know more once you play the game but overall you just have three chapters, 18 missions total, and certain frustrations in the single player. The cool thing is that once you beat it on normal the game teases you AGAIN offering rewards in beating the game on "Twisted" mode. Which is fine; but will seem impossible to the average gamer. But a good reward nonetheless.

Multiplayer is where it's at. Though right now there are some bugs in connecting in a game and whatnot. But join in with fellow friends and you will have endless hours wasted on a fun time. Guaranteed. Even if you suck this game rules with friends. LAN support, Clan support, and even matchmaking (Unlocking skins, perks, bonuses, etc) are the tip of the iceberg.

Twisted Metal was a game I grew up with as a kid. And being a fan of the series. I can easily say this is the best Twisted Metal game of all time. Hands down. But if I were to judge this game on a scale of 1-10. Here is my score.

8.9/10

Disliked

- Story having major holes.
- Things can get chaotic with the UI and controls
- Multiplayer right now sucks. But fun when you are "In"
- Beating the game on hardest might upset people on the "Unlocks"
- Better get used to multiple control schemes. Flying, Driving, and riding.

Liked

- Friends or no friends this game is a blast to play offline and online with or without friends
- Fun and twisted story. Every wish has a twisted ending. Just like how twisted metal should be.
- Gameplay is sweet once you get the hang of it. Beating normal mode feels like an accomplishment!
- Soundtrack is amazing with Rock, Rap, and Metal. Perfect combination.
- Maps are huge!!! Just when you thought you know a map you accidently discover something by blowing it up reveling something that can help you.
-

Final Thoughts

Is this the best PS3 game out there? No. But is it a must own? Hell yes. Hell fucking yes. You can't own a PS3 without feeling a little bit twisted. And if you are an old fan of the series you will LOVE this game. If not; then at least rent this game and play with your friends. It's a great party game. Nothing better than blowing up your friends while tearing up the streets of time square.

This game owns.

Thank God Twisted Metal is back. My only complaint with this game is only having 3 drivers and different cars to choose from. It doesn't ruin the game for me, I would just prefer the classic Twisted Metal set-up.

My friend and I made TDG (Team Dai-Gurren) if anyone is interested in joining.

We play once or twice a week. And we own.

Also I am working on getting the unlocks to help the clan out. I already wreck shit with Reaper. And believe me I am Godly as that vehicle.
