And Obama is definitely going to sign it.

Thoughts?

'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' directed that gays and lesbians had to hide their sexuality in order to serve in the U.S. military.

Does this mean everyone can be open about this in the military? I've been hearing so much about this on the news, and I hate that it kept getting denied. Why does it matter if the person you're serving next to has a different sexual preference than you?

I'm not sure. But my boyfriend who is more up on these things than I am mentioned reading an article which interviewed Marines about having opening gay people serving alongside them. Something like 83% of Marines who say they have served with someone they were sure was gay said they didn't care and it didn't make a difference to them.

Awesome, but the fact that this was even a debate sickens me to the bone.

The DREAM Act, which would have passed some grand immigration form, fell through. :/

Just to be sure the facts were correct, I looked it up and the Washington Post writes:

"... 84 percent of combat arms Marines who had served with a homosexual said that there would be no effect or that the effect would be positive."

While this sounds really good in theory...and in practice...I don't care too much for these statistics. They're only going by what people SAY.

I am not against gays and lesbians serving. I am, however, cautious about putting my "vote" to something I couldn't particularly live with someone. So, at this point, I'd just keep my fingers crossed to the "pioneers" so to speak of this act being passed. I know plenty of assholes who were kicked outta the military for beating nearly to death people they even assumed were gay. And, while 80-something percent looks good, I wanna see 80-something percent PROVE that they don't care. In fact, it bothers me that they don't care. They SHOULD care. Because whether they're gay or not, they're serving beside them. So, everyone SHOULD care that these people are stood up for, not just persecuted. And yes, "these people." If they're allowed to be open about their sexuality, that unfortunately forms a new group. And that's just sad.

I'm speaking more objectively than subjectively here, by the way. :p I cringed when I typed "these people."

I see it in much the same way most people see race these days. You have an African-American man in your unit, you don't go, "Wow, awesome! A black man! Suh-weet!!" You just don't think about it, therefore you don't care and race is not a high priority to you so long as everyone's putting in their all alongside you.

And that's how the majority of those wanting to do away with 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' probably see it -- that you just shouldn't care what a person's sexual preference is, along with what color their skin is what god they pray to (or don't).

But in the sense that you mean, yes, they should stick up for the rights of these downtrodden to be represented. That's what America is SUPPOSED to be -- the land of the FREE and the home of the brave.

You know I sort of thought of the DADT policy as something different. More of a protection for those who are gay. Where I'm from soldiers in benning who go through basic have been known to be your typical bible belt guy. There are reports of soldiers who have been stabbed and what not. DADT was made so that gays and lesbians can join the army how ever it seems that it was also made so that gays and lesbians can't be bullied or beat up.

I have worked with gay, lesbian, and bisexual soldiers. It doesn't make a difference to me. DADT is something I really don't care about. Seriously. DADT is fooey to me. Now that they can serve openly... weeeee well What ever.

I always figured it was this way myself. Who cares whether or not if you're openly gay while serving? The only ones who care are the ones who are going to start problems so use some common sense. It's cool if you like to be who you are, but don't go announcing "I'm gay!" or "I'm the black guy!" or "I'm a sentient llama come from another dimension to destroy your pathetic human race!". It's just not called for, not in my opinion.

My biggest concern is that nobody gets hurt because of this, I've known some pretty damn ignorant and intolerant people go into the service who might do something stupid. They're that last 26% and the other 25% or so who weren't interviewed or gave a false report.

I think the way you swing and what you're doing in your bunker is the last thing most people care about when you're on a battlefield.

Also nothing against people of that venture, as many have said in the thread, but the political correctness and people going 'oh look what rights I have now because I'm a minority' kind of grate on my nerves a bit. Now this isn't everyone that I know in cases like that but such people do exists, because I've read the comments to stories such as these. They're pretty short-sighted and pretty stupid comments no matter how you slice it - this is the military for crying out loud.

Of course, I'll probably get even more points off for saying that women shouldn't serve in the military. Not saying that they are lesser or not capable of actively serving whatsoever, but it's battle and it's war. It's something women should never be part of, in my wholly honest opinion...and I say this with the respect that a cousin of mine is with the Marines and is very skilled at what she is and who she is...but I still believe she should have never been a part of that for those reasons alone. Although her reasons are altruistic in wanting to serve the country she lives for, which I wholly understand and praise her for, it still should not be something a woman ever has to go through.

Just my opinion. Not something I want to say 'enforce' one way or another...especially in an era of political correctness where one 'short-sighted' comment will spell your doom with anyone you talk to that is incredible sensitive and/or close-minded to ideals.
