Any good places to start? I was reading a pretty awesome book at Barnes and Noble earlier today, I was able to retain everything from the first 2 chapters pretty damn easily! The only problem is that I don't have the $40 to fork out for the book...
So Xeogaming, I come to you! Are there any good websites out there that teach all the basics? |

for html you will wanna try Funky Chickens. That gives you a basic thing on what html is.
xhtml is html but lower cased and there are more slashes to show that there's an end to the code. As far as CSS help goes it's easy if you read it, you'll understand it after you learn html. But here's a good site to help you out with your cascading style sheets: W3 Schools. It would be awesome if you did learn a bit of html. I've made websites before and it's very easy to me. |

Rule number 1: NEVER learn a programming language from a book unless you have oodles of cash to spare. Everything in that book is online.
Rule 2: You learn best by doing. Go grab a copy of Dreamweaver (trial or pirate) and get some demo HTML samples. Start by fiddling with the code in "split" view to see the changes immediately. Rule 3: Ask Questions! If you need help, google what you want to do. 99% of the time, you'll get more than 3 different answers, all of which will work. As a side note, the differences between HTML and XHTML are so incredibly small that almost no one actually distinguishes between the two. Dreamweaver will automatically start you with XHTML, which is actually somewhat easier to work with in Dreamweaver. If you have any questions, let me know. I am self-taught and follow nearly all of the W3C standards. I have also coded a good number of (X)HTML/CSS web pages. Demo stuff: Demo 1: Horizontal menu Demo 2: Vertical menu Demo CSS: Both menus (Last edited by Lord Alexandor on 10-04-10 10:53 AM) |

... Starting out with Dreamweaver is stupid to me. Our teacher in high school taught us the basics before we moved to dreamweaver. Why? Because it was best that we knew what the code was FOR and if we needed to go through and fix things in the code ourselves.... Dreamweaver will mess up sometimes and you have to figure out the code for yourself.

Originally posted by True Flight You are very correct. However, the newest version of Dreamweaver is fantastic. However, you should NEVER EVER EVER use a WYSIWYG editor for ANY reason. (WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get) They ALWAYS result in broken and/or bad code. If anything, use a split view and work on the code with the site changes visible. I usually just use code view in Dreamweaver and check the progress by refreshing the page in Firefox. This lets me use Dreamweaver's auto-closing tags and other features to speed things up while not screwing up my code. Also, demos are up! |

Yeah I hated using Dreamweaver in my Web Design class when I was in high school, it was way better just to do it at manually by hand or whatever.
I'll just second w3schools, I used that one a lot in the past. CSS is probably as tough as you want it to be. It's pretty simple and cool, but you can definitely do some crazy stuff with it if you really get into it. |

I'd also staying away from XHTML Strict (whatever number they're at now).
It's just not worth the effort of making it validate.
