Yeah, I already upgraded my video card. My old one could run every game out there, sure, but this one can do that and make them prettier... Also higher frames per second with everything MAXED. AVP 3 looks absolutely amazing with the DX11 options turned on and it destroys Crysis in DX10. 60 fps in Dalaran on WoW doesn't hurt either!

Best of all, it's at a normal price point. Hell the Cyclone GTX 460 is basically the same thing. But it just begs and whines to be overclocked. And get this:
It's silent! |

I have the 1Gb Gigabyte, I overclocked the heck out of it.
I'm sitting steady at an 800 MHz Core, 1600 Shaders and an effective memory clock of 3800... On stock cooling and without changing a single voltage. Best part? It doesn't go above 60 degress! Edit: Oh yeah, the fan at 100% is way quieter than my 9800GT's fan at 30%. All I can hear is the air moving! Edit2: Adjusted the voltages. Steady at 890 MHz Core, 1780 Shaders and Memory at 4000. I'm totally okay with this. (Last edited by Gunmetal Badass on 09-14-10 01:09 AM) |

Is this for laptop or desktop? I have the 9800 GTS, but it's for the laptop... doesn't make too much noise. No idea what the fan is set at though.

This is my desktop, I'm not sure if the GTX 400 models are out for lappys yet. My old 9800GT made a LOT of noise and was always at about 80 degrees, even idle. It didn't go up at all under load though, so that was good I guess...
After stress testing my new one, I wasn't able to keep it up as high as I wanted. After a bit of research, the Dell XPS 420 motherboard does NOT like overclocking. I can keep the core clock at about 800 MHz without a hitch but anything higher shuts off the display driver after a bit. If I had a better mobo then the voltages would probably be a bit more steady... but until then I'm fine with even the default settings for this beast. |

Have you tried using MSI Afterburner? That's a pretty good OC utility and it should have came with that card you bought.

That's what I used. It gets it stable but not past 800, my mobo is Dell and Dell hates overclockers.

I am going to assume it's because Dell hates that kinda thing. Which is why I support custom builds more than buying a straight up computer online or from a store.
That way I know what I am capable of doing. Hell for all I know that mobo of yours could actually be able to OC your stuff through BIOS. I dunno. But a lot of people like the simple way out. Yours does no do that I guess. What wattage is your power supply? |

I got a 750W power supply on sale at Newegg.
As far as the BIOS, Dell basically strips it of any kind of customization capability, which is a load of bs. Otherwise my cpu would be OC'd to about 3.2 GHz (from 2.4). The only other way to get it to run at 3.0 GHz is to take a little itty bitty piece of electrical tape and put it over a single pin on the cpu. I don't know how or why, but that instantly jumps the front side bus to 333! I'm investing in a new CPU, mobo, RAM and case anyhow, so I'm not too terribly worried about it at the moment. I'll make sure to have damn good airflow as well! |

Coolermaster or Xclio makes good cases. But for the latter; go with coolermaster. Xclio if you are on a budget.
As forthat card you have it's more than capable enough to run anything you throw at it. Only thing that MIGHT stop you is your processor. But that 'Might' part is just minor and isn't really necessary to check out. Your best bet right now is to just jump up the CPU and mobo. I dunno what type of RAM you have but if it's DDR2 then sure go ahead and upgrade that while you are at it. But if you are on a budget; then don't. You could save about $100 |

I'm looking to futureproof this guy, I'm getting a DDR3 compatible mobo for sure, and I'm upgrading to a 64-bit Windows (finally). As far as running anything I throw at it... Crysis, Very High settings, 0xAA 16xAF. 40+ frames per second.
I'll worry about anti-aliasing when I have an SLI setup, otherwise it just kills the frames. Everything's still very pretty, though! As for the case, I was looking at Coolermasters. They're purty. I want something that is somewhat see-through so I can put a bunch of LEDs and crap in it. Once you can run every single game out there perfectly, the only thing left to worry about is how badass your rig looks, right? |

If I were you I would start saving up for Win7 already. The support for the newest DX11 cards are absolutely awesome. |
