Originally posted by Ryan Pretty much every example you have of their faults is actually not in the quaran, but in Sharia Law. Now, the interesting thing about Sharia law is that it isn't exactly specifically defined to all Muslims. Unlike in the Bible, everything is not spelled out. As a result, a lot of Islamic groups interpret it differently. So, for example, the muslim extremists who promote terrorism may believe many of the thins you reference, while more peace loving groups could hold different values or beliefs. What that basically means is, you're right about some, but only about the extremists, who I think we can all agree could use some work. As for building the mosque near ground zero...I will agree that we have no legal way to stop it from being built. Constitutionally, we cannot deny them. But I still say its in very bad taste for them to want to build it so nearby, and it will, withou a doubt, backfire very strongly on the muslim community. I'm sure that they don't view it the same was we do, they probably don't mean to insult or offend...but I still think the should move it a bit farther away. |

I don't see it as an insult or offensive. I see it as them building a new center near the site of a tragedy to remind people of the result of the path of hatred. Plus, if they have already had a mosque there for long before, who are we to say that they cannot build a new one? | ||||||||||||||||||||||

It's actually not a mosque. Cordoba House is meant to be community center.
It was pretty much going to be a cooking school, daycare center, among other things. Olbermann talks a bit about it: Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy Olbermann does have a tendency to exaggerate, but in this case he's mostly just providing you with images of what one might actually see at Ground Zero verses the proximity of the center to it. But Jon Stewart has his own way of getting people look and laugh at the situation:
Stewart once again taking on Fox news:

Eh, to be honest, just let the fuckers burn the books.
Since it really doesn't matter, it's all just symbolic bullshit anyway, and if they're stopped from doing something as pathetic as burning a few books, they're just going to move onto more extreme stuff anyway. It's just unfortunate that religious people are likely to take symbolism more seriously than it should. |

Somewhat old post, but whatever.
Originally posted by Rogue Let's say, for the sake of argument, that they are. Let's say that all Muslims are terrorists, just for this. The people who plan to burn these books likely believe it, so yeah, let's say that. Okay? With me so far? Now, with that assumption in mind, answer me this... Why are you trying to piss the terrorists off? |

Slight bumpage there.
But I wholeheartedly agree. This is a bad idea that is going to insight another attack, it's their way of completeing the self fulfilling cycle, and it's a shame to burn any literature even if you don't agree with the message. |

I agree with Rogue in the sense that not every Muslim is a terrorist.
Sure, the Christians (not all of them, of course) may believe this to be true, but that doesn't mean they are right. There are nice families out there that are probably terrified to go anywhere near a church until this calms down. I have a few Muslim friends myself, and they are genuinely nice people. And for the record: Originally posted by dictionary.reference.com What the Christians themselves are doing is considered terrorism. They are no better than the ones they seek to get rid of. |

how about instead of lumping all christians together and saying "the christians" you simply say "these christians" instead? Cause I'm a Christian and I'm not one of these christians....
I know it's petty but just like not all muslims are terrorists, not all Christians feel this way either. |

Originally posted by geeogree I know, I mentioned that already: Originally posted by Phoenix But how you feel is exactly how the Muslims feel. They probably want to be excluded just as you do from all of this. Instead of "the Muslims", why can't we say "the terrorists" or "those specific Muslims"? Bunching them all together isn't right either. What you ask isn't petty--it's the way everyone should be thinking. |

Interpol is warning that there will be an increased risk of terror attacks if the burning goes through.
Apparently if Obama or the Pentagon call them, they're likely to cancel it. It's to the point that presidents from other countries are calling up Obama telling him to intervene. Indonesia, the most populous Muslim country and a friend to the U.S., seems to be the most vocal about asking Obama to stop this. Even the Pope is condemning the burning. |

Well, I know Obama has spoken out against it... at least that is what I heard on the news this morning. I really hope that they don't go through with this, I mean, it is just stupid.

You don't know what kind of damage that would do to the soldiers here in Iraq and Afghan. There were several attacks on the FOB I am at and towards the US Embassy killing a few people in the Embassy.
These type of acts are the kind of things that do make us Christians look bad, but they also endanger the soldiers still stationed here. Along with that, we had received a request to cover a story about a baptism going on in the Red Zone. The chaplain will be baptizing islam converts in this FOB in the middle of the Red Zone around Sept 11. Our XO said no of course because that's sending out a bunch of people to their deaths. Fun stuff... fun stuff... Can you believe even though the Pentagon called him personally, that Gen Patreus (Operation Enduring Freedom General) even said that it wouldn't be a good idea? If a FOUR STAR GENERAL IN AFGHANISTAN SAYS IT'S A REALLY BAD IDEA you should've stopped the idea to begin with. I talked with my grandmother about this and she said that he was demonstrating his freedom of speech. She was all for it. I mean come on your own grand daughter is in Iraq getting mortared for this crap?! Wtf. However... burning the Quran is one of the things Muslims do to get rid of it. However... I do believe that Islam is well... wrong. Why? Because I have read the Quran. It's very graphic as far as it teaching you how to marry 9 year olds and teaching you how to rape them. Along with that the women in this religion have noooooo word what so ever. They are taught to walk behind men and they are traded for being married. AND The prayers here are very annoying. I really don't like the idea of praying more than 8 times a day. Jeez they pray so much here as it is. During Ramadan, it's even worse. Let's not forget the fact that there were islams that died during 9/11 too. NOT THE RADICALS. I'm talking about in the twin towers. You wouldn't believe how many there were. So all this hate and what not is totally uncalled for. From the Quran: " The prophet said to the Jews, " Islam is a religion of peace or you will die"." Someone posted this on Facebook and you would not believe the comments that come from this. YOU ALSO FORGET: The Christians and the Muslims have been at war for many years. This is a war that everyone is just now noticing? Come on everyone. All this grudge is totally uncalled for. (Last edited by True Flight on 09-10-10 03:04 AM) |

Burning the American flag is how it is ceremoniously retired, but using that to justify a hippie or someone on the other side of the world joyously burning it in the street doesn't make anyone feel any better about it.
Stories are rapidly updating that this guy is determined to hold the Quran burning. I'm more convinced this guy is all about getting media attention and that's all. I mean his reasons for holding the burning keep changing up. And, True, can you please tell me where it says rape is OK in the Quran? I just spent the last hour searching rape in the Quran and haven't found anything other than a bunch of sites that discuss people's misconceptions on reading it saying that the Quran stresses chastity. I can see marrying 9-year-olds since Muhammad married a girl that age and in that era people were married much younger. (Last edited by Rogue on 09-10-10 06:24 AM) |
