As a geek, I totally understand people getting excited about things they're watching on TV, buying a fuckton of merch, and shouting excitedly like mentally-challenged seals when it comes to sports.

It's never "They won!!" It's "WE won!!"

You feel like you're a part of something bigger. Sports is a cradle-to-the-grave fandom. Your family's all for one team and rooting for them is part of your lineage.

I get it. It's outstanding, guys.

Now...

I happen to be a Los Angeles native. I do not give a shit if the Lakers win tonight. In fact, if they lose, I might be glad of it.

In the past 10 years, whenever the Lakers have won the championship, the fans went APESHIT. They're turned over and burned police cars and so on.

Last year, they destroyed many of the businesses within walking distance of the Staples Center. They broke into stores, looted the places, and then poured the booty into the streets to light on fire. They threw trashcans at buses. Fights broke out. Property damage up the fucking wazoo. It cost the city millions to clean up. And the Lakers STILL got a multi-million dollar victory parade.

I imagine if the Lakers lose people will still riot.

See I think it should be the Lakers that should have to pay for the cleanup not the city of LA. It's just like a perent has to pay for somethin there kid brakes in a store, I think fans are like the kids of a sports team and they should have to clean up after them.

Yeah, sports riots can get pretty crazy. I remember last year when the Penguins won and I was in Pittsburgh there was a few minor riots, but the police broke them up before anything too serious could happen. The severity of riots depends on the fanbase or how long they've waited for a championship and I know LA is a pretty big sports town so that's why the riots are really crazy.

Here's a small sliver of the damage from last year:

I don't get it. How psychopathic do you need to be to translate a sports victory into "Yeah, guys! Let's burn people's cars!!!"

Tonight is definitely going to be an All-Hands-On-Deck!! situation for the LAPD.

Yeah, I dont understand that either, Rogue. Its one thing to be proud of your local sports team, but why does the violence and everything need to occur? What does looting a store and putting peoples lives at risk have anything to do with a sports team winning?

People over react to things. The parade is a gesture of good faith (although, I dont see why it needs to be so much), but everything else just seems completely disrespectful to the team, if anything.

If you guys are familiar with the KS vs Raiders rivalry, things have gotten pretty hellish from time to time during those games. Silly beans.

Because sports are SERIOUS BUSINESS and they're rich for no reason.

When I was taking Intro to American Pop Culture last semester, it was so amusing being surrounded by all these Lakers fans who made fun of people into science fiction, comics, anime, and other fandoms saying that people got too excited about stuff that "isn't real."

Because, you know, basketball and other sports aren't games that started out as entertainment for kids, or analyzed as being simulated battle.

Yeah...nobody gets that excited over the Eagles over here because we suck..

But anyway, it's still dumb. A billion dollar industry and they could care less if the people destroy their city.

It's all because sports are seen as "cool" and science fiction, comics, etc. is seen as something nerds, which is stupid. Also, on the topic of athletes get paid too much. It's because they generate so much revenue for their teams and for the city and because there's only one Tom Brady or one Mark Teixeira and teams will pay top dollar to have players with their type of skill on their team.

Wait, there were riots after the Pens won? The fuck?

But yeah, I honestly hate the Lakers and basketball in general, and it is really the fans that are the cause of it.

Riots was the wrong word to use, they weren't even riots. Just people going in to the streets climbing street lights and I think a couple of stores were broken into too.

Lakers won. As predicted, downtown L.A. is fucked.

Cars on fire, fights, arrests. Some people were just on the news getting thrown to the pavement and handcuffed because they were trying to set T-shirts ablaze. Twelve arrests so far, mostly for public drunkeness. One injured cop (from someone throwing something at him).

It's a really shitty video, but it shows some of the fires and random shit going on right now:

Yeah, I really don't care for sports in general, but I honestly hate the Lakers for their fans. My father is a Lakers fan, but you don't see him lighting up things on fire to celebrate! Sporting events can be fun, even for those of us who don't really understand the game or enjoy the sport. There is just something about the environment of watching a game. However, that can quickly be ruined by fans like the ones the Lakers have. I really wish something would be done about them.

That's disgusting. Seriously. But I really can't point a finger at anyone. My city is weird. When the Phillies won the World Series, the city wasn't as bad as most thought it would be. If anything, it was the players that were out of line, with Chase Utley saying "World fucking champs!" in public, live(Although I think it was pretty cool. XD).

And it is funny how bandwaggon sports really are. At least Sci-Fi, anime, comics, whatnot, there's something more loyal about them. For instance, I was able to talk to 5 customers yesterday about the Deadpool comics. No one, not even my customers purchasing NBA titles, were ready to talk about basketball. You can talk about things like comics, movies, anime, anywhere at anytime. Most sports are well...there when your local team is winning. I have been a hockey fan my whole life, but I'll admit, I didn't get into baseball until Philly's team won their championship. (Well, my gramps and I watched it together, he tells me how excited he is to finally wittness a championship victory with me, and then died 6 months later...okay okay, baseball is a little special to me now.)

Admittedly, when I was deeply into baseball growing up, it was part of getting to hang out with my cousin.

The day of our grandfather's funeral, he bought me a ticket to see the Dodgers, which followed a celebrity game. We sat there in our funeral clothes, cheering on our boys in blue (we also got to take part in setting the record for the most people doing the Macarena at the same time ... which was shattered a couple weeks later when a Latino street fair in L.A. decided to do it). Anyway, bottom of the 9th, score tied at 3 and Mike Piazza steps up to the plate. I start praying. The man whacks it into the cheap seats and the crowd goes wild.

Sports-wise, for me, nothing else in the world would ever compare to that menial win. Nothing.

That's what it's all about. That's why people like sports, and why they call it their own. I'm really glad you had that sort of experience though, despite what happened in the beginning of that day. Sports or not, I think things like that just make the bad things in life feel a little easier, even if it's just for a moment.

And then crazy fans ruin it.

I don't think the sports team should pay for the damage though. It's not their fault. What I DO think they should do, however, is use their public influence to deter such behavior, and as far as the parade goes, it's unfortunate for the players who actually care about it, but it's mostly for the fans, and the parade should be taken away all together. No matter what city it is.

The Lakers actually put out a commercial following the game, "Celebrate with dignity," telling people to not get too crazy.

Astonishingly, only one car (that they know of) was on fire this year, 20 arrests, a few wounded officers, and Things were peaceful... eh.
