I got a new laptop this past week. It's pretty awesome and 2358732658x better than my old desktop PC. One problem has risen though. Space is being mysteriously taken up at a rapid pace.

I had 166GB free yesterday, but now I only have 158 today. I haven't downloaded anything to my C: drive during that time at all. Uh lol wut.

So I have no idea what's going on.

EDIT: ON SECOND THOUGHT. I think I found it out. Hahaha. I always do this. Ask something but then know later. Still, any opinions are still valid.

My only guess is that's it was completely brand new and you were installing programs / perhaps the OS and all that junk. External HD's mysteriously do this, if you by a 1TB HD, expect only like 900 of that to be usable.

If that's not the case ... weird? What did you think it was?

ehhhhh Vista.

Still happy to be on XP ... I'm hearing Windows 7 is supposed to be pretty good though (and comes out soon I think?).

What kind of laptop did you get? Just curious because that's basically what happened with me, got a laptop for graduation and it beat the tar out of the family computer I used to use.

... and just a few, minor years later it's already falling so behind. I have a Latitude D820 which I think my grandparents did spend quite a bundle on, now I typically see laptops at least 3x better than this one (space, ram, processor, etc) for like a third of how much this thing cost. , I even kind of want to buy a new one myself, but I should probably look into getting a desktop I guess.

It's an HP Lovebeam Rocker.

Or something like that. An HP. It's rocking my old computer. My computer is now just used to either to the odd homework or if I need to traverse potentially risky areas. Good times.

So porn.

It's probably your cache filling up some space, nothing big to worry about.

Also, go into msconfig and turn off Readyboost, that thing tries to speed up things that you do often but it actually slows down your computer and can crash it. It's perhaps the biggest blunder of Vista.

So it turns out it's not that hard to swap out RAM for the laptop I have, ram is apparently really cheap, etc etc etc. I ordered 2x2GB cards so I'm about to quadruple my memory whenever I get those in the mail. Can't wait.

My initial thought would be virtual memory.

Seriously, that bitch can take quite a bit of space on your harddrive.

Because I can, I'll just slap this here for an overall approximate:

When your space is magically vanishing, keep in mind that Windows Vista needs about 20 Gbs (15Gbs to install it, but 5 extra because it's an asshole OS) in itself to be on your harddrive, ontop of that, most factory manufactured OS's come with a retarded amount of Trial programs.

In some situations, make sure you check your Public Sharing folders, since sometimes music, or programs, can be thrown into the mix there and screw with you hard without your attention.

General Defrags and Disk Checks (Aka: cleaning history and cookies) can really help out.

MSCONFIG can help with thoes who know what their doing, but if you play your cards right, you really don't even need that program to really get your computer going.

So long story short, mind the file size of your program installers and program folders =P

Edit: Virtual Memory takes about 2.5x your Ram you have, when you let the computer take control automatically. Most modern computers don't even need that much VM, let alone even worry about it due to the 100+Gbs normal harddrives come as. If you really worry about it, just tweak it so your Virtual Memory is 1.5 times that of your normal ram (both minimal and maximum values). Google it for instructions.

Anymore then 1.5x your ram really is just wasting space.
