So, it's killed quite a few people now, and is infiltrating California, Texas and New York.

A local school, Indio High School had an infected student, so the school (all students, faculty and staff including janitors), has been shut down for seven days.

The nearest marine base (Twenty-nine Palms) has a confirmed case, and the infected marine and his roommate are under quarantine.

Sooo... thoughts?

I'm not stating this as "matter of fact", but only what I overheard.

The only reason why the people who died in Mexico actually did was because of them living in underdeveloped rural areas far away from satisfactory health care. I've even heard that the swine flu can go away as easily as the normal flu but regular people die from that too, so...

Who knows? Stay healthy, people.

I said something similar earlier tonight.

As far as schools shutting down...no, I don't think it's overboard...but I don't think schools shutting down makes this all the more terrifying. Inconvenient, yes.

Schools are breeding grounds for infection, as someone stated over the local news tonight. If schools are shutting down now, it's a preemptive strike. Checking things out before it becomes a problem.

I can agree to that. It really is unfortunate that this thing is airborne, too. But it does bring new meaning to the phrase, "when pigs fly".

I'm trying to hold off on saying anything regarding my personal thoughts on this. It's bound to piss someone off.

Here in the L.A. and O.C. people are panicking like you can't believe. One of the editors on the paper with me truly believes he has it. He's had a cold for the past week and he actually went to get tested. I've known him since we were on another paper together a few years back, and he is a known hypochondriac.

People are walking around campus wearing face masks. Sort of reminds me of all of the pictures from Asian towns when avian flu and SARS were rampant.

So far there are only 3 suspected cases in the two counties combined with 2 confirmed in Ventura (the county above L.A.) and 1 in Riverside county (the county directly east of L.A. and O.C.)

Several people are concerned about tomorrow when we have the May Day protest and marches in Los Angeles. Thousands gather in the streets to support giving immigrants (mostly illegal immigrants) more rights and protest the war in Iraq. MANY of the people who come to protest for immigrant rights are fresh from Mexico.

I called up the people hosting this year's protest. They told me the protest and march is still going as planned, and people can wear masks if they feel they need to. They don't feel threatened as there aren't any confirmed cases in Los Angeles.

EDIT: If you want to know my thoughts on this, they're completely the same as Ron Paul's.

There is a suspected case at my school and people are a bit spooked but there are no masks. People in the O.C. are just crazy I think. And I guess a cruise ship that came in today has a case on board so that is all over the news as well. Frankly, I don't care... it's just another strain of the flu and all you really have to do is take care of yourself and you'll be fine.

Someone that my boyfriend knows honestly thinks that it's caused by eating pork. I really don't know why they think this... I guess all the stuff with the spinach and the peanut butter has them conditioned to think that way... but it is really stupid.

Paris Hilton was in the tabloids again because some paparazzi were asking her if she was concerned about swine flu and she said casually, "I don't eat that."

Some of the people in the office are saying this so-called swine flu "pandemic" is a racist thing, because a lot of people seem to think you get it from Mexicans.

That's like saying you get AIDS from blacks and gays. Then again I do remember there being idiotic speculation like that against Asians when I was in high school and SARS was the concern.

So I have this brilliant solution to the problem. Not exactly the flu issue, but the stupid person problem.

People are freaking out about it, and many of the dumber ones are refusing to eat pork, ham, etc. So, let's rename it. Call it the food flu.

I seriously can't stand the idiots who call this a pandemic. It's killed 150 so far in low income areas of Mexico, and that's pretty much it... Maybe a couple of other deaths in other parts, although from what I remember it isn't death, it's just severe cases in America and Britain because we both actually have the ability to help heal it.

And regular flu kills thousands each year, just because the strain of flu that normally only infects pigs has turned to us too doesn't mean we're all going to die.

Fucking media and their fear campaigns. I believe the Swine Flu will have as much affect as Bird Flu, Mad Cow Disease and Rabies... None of which actually did anything significant.

So the consensus appears to be that people are idiots and should calm down.

"Porn Hub", huh? Rogue, you naughty woman. I'd try to find a video with four guys eating pink-colored tacos on a tree to counter you, but I'm not so sure that would fly with everybody here. Aside from that, I think the only real problem with H1N1 is that people probably aren't taking care of themselves very much if they get it. We've had several cases of in the US, but how many of those people died? The only deaths I've heard of were in Mexico. And as mentioned before, it was due to lack of medical care, and what I also think to be a lack of exercise. I believe exercise can greatly help cure the damn strain. I don't think people should be afraid. It seems to me it's just a more hardcore version of the normal strain. That's it. It may require a bit more medical help, but I truly believe that's all it really is, not the apocalyptic virus the media makes it out to be. Save that shit for the zombie movies, please.

So, West Nile Virus = mosquito flu.

Then we have bird flu...

Now it's swine flu?

Why all the animal hate, people?

Oh, and Cyro, only one person in the US has died of the flu, and all of the other cases have recovered without even needing medical care. From what I've heard, it's probably less dangerous than the real flu.

I saw the death in a newspaper stand yesterday. But I didn't know about it until then. Now it seems that I am right after all about the severity of the strain.

So there you go, that single case at Cal State Long Beach has been confirmed, alongside 2 more cases.

Guess I'll hold off on the walrus picture.

Walrus picture?

But yeah, I finally saw someone with a mask on Friday... and he wasn't even wearing it right since his nose was uncovered. But yeah, I still like Obama's first advice on the subject: cover your mouth when you cough and wash your hands.

I'm just waiting to see how many fucking morons are masked at school on Monday. I mean, the girl's been quarantined since last week, I doubt there is any real danger at this point. All it really means is that flu season is going to potentially suck this year and that a lot more people are going to want flu shots.
