That's... such a bizarre occurence. This is probably the most normal looking child with anencephaly I've ever seen. Look up "anencephaly" on Google and look at images... but only if you have a strong stomach.

Everyone has their own opinion. I skimmed through a little bit and saw that she was getting hatemail and such. That's a little overboard. But I do respect anyone who feels that this shouldn't be blogged about, and that this child's life shouldn't be turned into a circus. I'm not saying it is or isn't. It's all in how you see it.
I, however, don't think this woman is doing anything wrong. I rarely see people as strong as her. First, she kept her baby. If things went the way the doctor's planned, then carrying a child full-term, only to have it die just after is a terrifying experience. Miscarriages are hard enough, so I wouldn't wish anything like this on anyone. So what if she's blogging? I didn't read much of it, and if I ever have time to, my opinions may or may not change, but for right now, I don't see a problem. For starters, there's nothing wrong with sharing her experience in deciding to keep the baby. And, I see plenty of mothers blog about their children and put pictures up. What's wrong with this one? Her blog is gentle and loving. It's not like she's saying "Hey, lookit this baby! **insert Nelson laugh here**" This also intrigues me about this "anencephaly" because I also know jack shit about that, other than what I skimmed in the blog. I don't think I could google images though...I really can't stomach anything like this that has to do with kids. |

She's definitely not crazy psycho or anything. She sure as hell isn't an octo-mom... but I would rather have had an abortion than put a living being through anencephaly.
Anencephaly is a cephalic disorder that results from a neural tube defect that occurs when the cephalic (head) end of the neural tube fails to close, usually between the 23rd and 26th day of pregnancy, resulting in the absence of a major portion of the brain, skull, and scalp. Children with this disorder are born without a forebrain, the largest part of the brain consisting mainly of the cerebral hemispheres (which include the isocortex, which is responsible for higher level cognition, i.e., thinking). The remaining brain tissue is often exposed—not covered by bone or skin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anencephaly Only view this page if you have a strong stomach. Without a forebrain, the body cannot control temperature, reproductive functions, eating, sleeping, and the display of emotions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forebrain (Last edited by Belial on 04-28-09 04:21 PM) |

That's the first time I've heard or seen anything like that. I never knew such cases existed. After looking at those pictures on Wiki, I must say that the blogged baby does indeed have a very mild case, almost like she doesn't have that condition at all.

Thank you Cyro. I see a lot of things on Gaia in the thread. LIke this baby should've been aborted, that thing's not alive... it's a vegetable... but in all honesty, I'm interested in seeing if this child gets better or not.

I had heard about this blog and baby in a WTF group on LiveJournal, and I must say that many of the people commenting on the situation are insensitive pricks.
Those whom I'm speaking of say things like the baby should be killed and used as "spare parts" for other babies that would otherwise be healthy if they had a better liver or kidneys, etc. The key point here is the child is alive. Perhaps she's a vegetable, perhaps she doesn't know where she is or why she exists, and this will only cause heartache to her parents if and/or when she dies, but she's a miracle. And Faith's mother is freakin' amazing displaying her maternal love to the world. I am pro-choice, and I do support abortions if that's the woman's choice, but she didn't do it. She held tough and she's going to love that child 'til Faith's dying breath. That's outstanding. |
