I must say, I was slightly disappointed. (Seeing as how I went as Human Alphonse)
WHERE THE HECK WERE THE FMA CHARACTERS?!?!

GAWD!

*Ahem*
Anyways...

Heard that .Hack//Trilogy was officially liscensed in the US.
(Hoping the actual VA's in the game will voice the characters.)

I bought quite a few mangas that I couldn't find in any nearby bookstore.

Uh... There were A LOT of SSBB and Metal Gear Cosplays.
Must say though... THAT IS NOT ANIME OR MANGA.
I like their costumes, but seriously, It's an "Anime" convention.
Lots of L's and Light's as well... Didn't like that.

The Masquerade?
Loud, but awesome.
The sound crew had a lot of problems with the volume, I thought.
A lot of the skits were hilarious, and sometimes, the crowd would burst out in synchronized clapping, and even the waving of cell phones.

All in all, it was an awesome convention, but I felt like it should've been longer.
There was too many things planned, and during the later part of the day seemed a lot less things to do than early in the morning.

Did you check out the extended Gundam 00 second season trailer?

Some videos are up of it on youtube now from the con, bad quality though. Must've been fun though, I'd like to go sometime!

Not really... >.<
(I haven't really watched gundam, so I wouldn't have known that was going on.)

I saw some of the videos, and might post a few of the AMV's I saw later.

You should go, it is quite fun.

When I first started going to anime conventions (2002 or 2003), there were a fuck-TON of Vash the Stampedes with Wolfwoods and Spikes and Fayes, as well as Inuyashas and Kagomes along with the occasional Naruto and Sasuke cosplayers.

The very next year, there was an explosion of interest in Naruto and suddenly their meet-and-greet had over 200 people there just dressed as Naruto.

Around that time, people were also really into Battle Royale and came dressed as random Japanese high school students covered in fake blood. Now most of those people are deeply into Death Note and come dressed as Light, L, and Misa.

The fandom evolves as the years progress, really, and it all depends on what people were watching.

I'll wager last year people were dancing Hare Hare Yukai, but this year were all over the cheer from Lucky Star and the Speedycake remix of Caramelldansen all over Otakon.

At least that's how Anime Expo was last month:

People were seriously parading around all con to that song. Linkage.

But seriously, how was Otakon overall? Like how many people were there? How was the exhibit hall?

The only reporting I've seen about it on LJ was a link to Best Week Ever lampooning it here: http://www.bestweekever.tv/2008/08/12/anime-convention-slightly-less-nerdy-than-comic-con/#comments

Anyway, here's my pictures from AX last month. Maybe they'll be entertaining to someone: http://merry-rogue.livejournal.com/169943.html

Oh god, how jealous can I get..

Otakon and Anime Expo are on my majorly need to go to list.

If I was cosplay is either be as a character from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya or possibly Shana.

Both of which I would have to seerrroiiiouuslly grow my hair for.

If you've never been to an anime convention, I thoroughly recommend either of those two. Between the two, AX is twice the size of Otakon, but I hear Otakon has a truer fanbase.

With AX, while the fans are great, you get a lot of people who just come to see what's going on and don't get really into it or you get the fanboys/girls who can be REALLY irritating.

I forgot to comment on this too. At Anime Expo this year, both SSBB and Metal Gear Solid were pretty overdone for cosplay, but so was Altair from Assassin's Creed. Those were the trend this year.

I guess people sort of take video games, made in Japan or not, as another medium to play up at anime cons. Not anime or manga, they know, but cosplaying is still cool no matter what. And besides there's still gray areas like Final Fantasy (is it a video game, or because of Advent Children and Spirits Within kinda in the movie category?).

Then again people also cosplay live action movies. Every year there's a few people dressed up like Kill Bill characters, and then this year my friend Bernie came as the Landlady from Kung Fu Hustle (which is actually a Hong Kong film).

I mean, I've been to Star Wars-specific cons where people came dressed in Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica costumes and some even came as Jay and Silent Bob from Kevin Smith's films. And then there's Comic-Con where it pretty much gets it all. Comics or not.

There was also a surge in guys dressed as Ash from Army of Darkness too, this year. Chainsaw and all.
