Teen girls made pact to get pregnant

GLOUCESTER, Mass. -- A pact made by a group of teens to get pregnant and raise their babies together is at least partly behind a sudden spike in pregnancies at Gloucester High School, school officials said.

Principal Joseph Sullivan told Time magazine in a story published Wednesday that the girls confessed to making the pact after the school began investigating a rise in pregnancies that has left 17 girls at the school carrying a child. Normally, there are about four pregnancies a year at the school.

Sullivan told Time that nearly half of the expecting students, none over 16, were involved. Sullivan said students were coming to the school clinic multiple times to get pregnancy tests, and "seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were."

Some of the girls reacted to the news they were pregnant with high fives and plans for baby showers, Sullivan said. One of the fathers "is a 24-year-old homeless guy," Sullivan told the magazine.

Superintendent Christopher Farmer confirmed the deal to WBZ-TV, saying the girls had "an agreement to get pregnant."

He said the girls are generally "girls who lack self-esteem and have a lack of love in their life."

Christen Callahan, a former Gloucester High School student who had a child when she was 15, said on NBC's "Today" show that some of the girls would ask her about her own pregnancy.

"They would say stuff like, oh, I think my parents would be fine with it and they would help me, stuff like that," Callahan said.

But she said she had no firsthand knowledge of a pact between the girls to get pregnant.

"They were just kind of like curious about it, they never actually came out and said it," Callahan said.

The first reports of the students' apparent plan to get pregnant were in the Gloucester Daily Times in March, when Sullivan said students were reporting that the girls were getting pregnant on purpose.

The rash of pregnancies has shaken the seaside city about 30 miles north of Boston. Last month, two officials at the high school health center resigned to protest the resistance from the local hospital to the confidential distribution of contraceptives. The hospital administers the state money that funds the clinic.

I really don't know what to say. I'm really starting to think Idiocracy, as silly and far-fetched as it is, may be right. Morons just keep breeding eventually filling the world with increasingly dimmer-witted people who do nothing more than reproduce and further soak up the resources.

Okay, that rant aside, this really is off the deepend. Completely and utterly.

Ugh...WHY! Wait, dont answer that question, because the only answer I am going to get is going to come from the naive girls from that article.

...I dont think these girls should be breeding. As stupid as they are from reading this alone, it sounds to me that they are not really bright.

You know what would be REALLY funny though?

If these babies they have grew up to form some elite group of scientists who could cure the world of all it's illness. XDXD

I can't help it. I think this is soooo dumb. Kinda hits home to me a bit. My parents weren't THAT stupid. None of their friends made any PACTS or anything...but my mom and her best friends all had kids around the same time. My best friend that I grew up with and I are only 5 days apart. Some of us are about a year or so apart...but like...it's weird. The same thing kinda happened to me I guess (As in I was the result of the "trend" of pregnancies)

Wanna know the funny thing? One of us is one year away from finishing law school, another is in medical school, another almost finished with her major in engenieering...and I'm not doing so bad myself wither.

Irony at it's finest.

I just think these dumb bitches are....tyuoreyhjgkdf...It was pretty hard for my friends and I growing up too, ya know? Not saying woe is us...but like it was hardship due to something that our parents did and that was out of our control sometimes. So like...yeah. They're dumb. I don't care about the insecurity aspect. We're all insecure. They need to get over it another way.

It's one thing to unintentionally get pregnant and keep the baby because that's your choice and you feel it's the only honorable and right thing to do.

But it's completely absurd to purposely get pregnant because you think it will enrich your life when you are certainly not ready for the hardships, sacrifices, and judgment young, unwed mothers face.

Yeah, I know I'm being judgmental, but what the fuck, people?! The economy's not doing so well right now and it's not fair to assume that your parents are going to shine on being responsible for your child when you realize the mistake you made. With prices consistently rising, it's going to be even harder having another mouth to feed.

Which brings me to a retorting article in Time Magazine saying to give the girls a break: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1818191,00.html

The writer considers the option that this is actually a trend in girls deciding to keep their unplanned pregnancies as a rejection of abortion. HOWEVER, multiple articles including the original one in Time (found here: http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1815845,00.html) along with the existence of this pact sort of prove that these were all planned to begin with.

I mean, I've got no beef with girls who've analyzed their situation, decided that abortion isn't right for them and strove to make the most of it.

Based on what I've read about it all, it comes off like the girls just wanted to have something that was going to love them no matter what. Oh dear.

Now there is an EXCELLENT point. That entire post you made I was nodding the whole time, I diddnt think about that.

Which is why I didn't say the children would be dumb or anything. But the Gene Pool has its way with making smart children spawn from the dumb parents. I forget the word / Phrase, but I think it has something to do with Elimination. But whatever. I could NOT agree with your more Katana

Oh, I hear you guys there. It's nuts. Like...that's why they're dumb. They intended it! Like, my mom said that her best friend having a baby made her want one...but like...there was something more emotional than intentional there it seems. Not saying "Yay! having babies young!" But I am saying "Yay mom for not aborting me..." That's exactly it, making the best of the situation.

These girls are just dumb.
