A woman at my mom's work had a cat she needed to give away. The going problem was that the cat wasn't getting along with her four cats and she was telling people it was a great cat to own--very loving and playful and just needed owners who would give him the attention he deserved.

My parents decided to adopt the cat and brought him home two days ago. The woman said if we had any issues to return him to her and not to any animal shelters.

This cat was fairly large and muscular, a little over a year old (at least that's what this woman claimed he was), and was a stray for the better part of his life.

Like most cats that are adopted they try to get used to their environment and adapt to the other creatures around it.

Miko, my female Russian blue cat, didn't take to him very well, hissing and growling at him like territorial cats do when they feel intruded upon. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt as he was new to us and Miko can be pretty bitchy.

Last night, though, he attacked Miko, who's much smaller and weaker than he is. Even when she tried to get away, with clumps of her hair ripped out, scratches and bites here and there, he pursued her until I got him to go away. She spent last night and most of today, hiding in a crawl space in the attic where no one can reach her.

I had my parents take the new cat back today much to my own sorrow as I fear he may end up put to sleep if a proper home can't be found for him. I've spent the last day feeling horrible about having to return a cat, something I've never had to do.

Insult to injury, the woman wrote e-mails to us to say we were impatient, that we pampered Miko too much, and that maybe we shouldn't have pets at all.

We weren't the first family to take in this cat. We were the fourth.

She even wrote in her e-mails about how the last couple who had him kept him for a whole month despite having cats who also didn't get along with him.

So let me get this straight--I have to let this guy kill my cat in order to convey that we were trying to be patient with him? FUCK THAT. I may tease Miko from time to time, but I'm not willing to put her in harm's way to prove shit to a woman who's laced with a cat that no one can handle and plays it off that they aren't worthy of him.

Incidentally, without provoking him, this cat has bitten me on 4 separate occasions, drawing blood each time, and almost biting me several other times when he would get in front of me, as if to beg for me to pet him.

Sorry to rant on this, but yeah, I'm pretty irked right now.

I've had nearly the same exact thing happen before. I've gone through probably a hundred cats in my lifetime, most of which being killed by a neighbor's cat either through serious injury or cat leukemia that they contracted from the bastard. In any case, it sucks that the cat doesn't really have anywhere to go but a shelter as it probably won't get along with anybody. Hopefully it will be adopted by somebody who doesn't have any other animals so it will have a fighting chance. Even if the cat is the biggest pain in the ass, it doesn't deserve to get put down.

That's my thought exactly. It's not his fault that he was a stray during his developmental years and had to fight (probably to the death) for his share of everything. I've taken in a couple strays before, but at the time I didn't have any other cats.

I feel that if he were taken in by a single man, they'd get along fine. He's really not a petting cat, but will demand that sort of attention from time to time.

The other issue we were having was that this cat is used to being outdoors. The woman who gave him to my parents insisted that we keep him inside so he would know where to come home to and so he wouldn't run away. It's a good idea, but because we fought tooth and nail to keep him indoors, he probably was getting frustrated and turned his aggression on Miko. This could also explain why he was biting us.

To be honest, I really wish we could have kept him. He's a magnificent creature. If we didn't have Miko, there wouldn't be an issue at all. We'd just let him be and that would be all.

But he attacked Miko. It's not an issue of pampering her or favoritism. Were the tables turned and Miko had nearly killed him, we'd still try to return him for his own safety.

You did the right thing. And yes, it did does deserve to be put down. If it's too much of an alley cat to live in a domicile then either put it down, or let it back into the alley.

Think of it this way: You're the one sacrificing something to have it around.

Whether it be time, or money, one of those things is going into keeping this animal in a safe environment, and you know what? It doesn't like it, then tell it to fuck off and throw it to the wolves.

I'm not saying do anything cruel to it, I'm against animal cruelty. But there are far worse things you can do to an animal than putting it down, or making it live in its natural habitat.
