So Wikipedia says that Mario is the single most recognizable videogame characters. While this may be true, I think that Pac-Man is at least equally recognizable. What do you think?

Well, while Pac-man is indeed very recognizable I still think that Mario is the far more recognizable video game character of the two.

I love how there are eight votes but only one reply (Not including this one) to the thread.

The fact is, Pac Man is old. He hasn't exactly had a new game. They've all been updates on the old one that PC developers make that give Pac weapons like shotguns to kill the ghosts with. The only thing I've seen him in recently is the arcade version of Mario Kart (Which reminds me, there's one of these at my local arcade now! ^__^ Although it sucks...) It's unlikely that newer, younger gamers will know who Pac Man is.

Mario has been around for over 20 years and is still holding as a strong franchise. Although where he'll go after traveling space I don't know...

I know where.
Mario Biology!
Mario's shrink ray will let him get inside the citizens of Mushroom Kingdom and save them from Bowser's vile biological warfare. Or something.
Btw, "Bowel World" is not exactly the prettiest of places.

Also, Ryan, I wholeheartedly agree on your logic.

I agree with Ryan as well.
Pacman will forever be the original pacman arcade game in my mind. But when someone says the name Mario sooo many different games pop into my head, and probably will forever .

If anyone says "Arcade" to me these days, I always think of House of the Dead, Time Crisis, DDR and 95% of the racing games on the consoles that have an arcade version. It has to be specifically "Retro Arcade" for me to think of Pac Man.

And the term "Games" makes me think of most of Nintendo's mascots, Valve games, Halo and Timesplitters.

Just as you guys say, Mario is the most popular. Mario was brought into a world where video games were on the rise. Just like a company expands itself after doing so well for a while, Mario has been put into several games since the first. Atari wasn't so popular back in the day. Infact, the video games industry back then was on the verge disappearing for a while. It woudn't have made a difference if a dozen Pac Man games were created. Because Nintendo is a strong franchise Mario has had a strong position in the gaming industry.

Let's not forget the majority of the world's prejudices against yellow ball people. Mario will always win there.

Furthermore, Mario became Raccoon Mario, and Bee Mario. What did Pac-Man become? A transvestite. More people found Mario's choice of costumes much more appealing.

Thus Mario wins.

Mario by far wins it just because he's always been around in this new game or that old game. Whereas the only times you see pac-man is when a new destined-for-faliure Namco museum comes out. Mario seriously just wins it though, because even characters from around his time such as Samus and Link don't get as much recognition. Fat italian plumbers sell games, 'nuff said

All thanks to that one little E.T. game... *Destroys every last remaining copy*

Well, that and about fifty other crap Atari titles, and the fact that people started to use computers for more than just games.

Pac Man's been around in quite a few games, the arcade original, sprite changed for Ms. Pac Man, a cartoon show in the early 80's, Pac Land game based on the TV show, Pac Mania, Pac Attack, Pac In Time, Pac Man 2 the New Adventures, and the Pac Man World games.

If I were to think of arcades, I'd think of Pac Man, Mappy, Time Pilot, Street Fighter 2, and other games, when I think of gaming for the consoles, I think of Atari as I started with it.

Perhaps age makes a person think differently, as well as what they started gaming out with.

That's a nice list for Pacman, but check this shit out:

Donkey Kong
Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 2
Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario World
Super Mario World 2
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Galaxy

Then there's all the Mario Party games, the Mario Kart series, the tennis, golf, football and basketball games, the remakes of the older games for the GBA, all the cameos Mario has made in other Nintendo and even outside of Nintendo games, the THREE cartoon series he starred in as a main character, all the product endorsements he's been part of (Although they're nearly all Japanese only stuff but I've seen pictures of all sorts of Mario brand food and snacks), I've even got a Flying Mario plush doll! Somewhere...

True, Pacman is a famous video game character, but Mario is an iconic video game character.

I know for a fact that isn't a complete list.

There's also Mario Paint, Hotel Mario, Mario's Time Machine, Mario Goes Missing... Seven other games that featured on Screw Attack's top ten worst Mario games video.

And according to the top ten mario games video by Screw Attack, Super Smash Bros could also be included.

Ok Mario has lots of games, but so does Megaman, Mario even had a long head start on the little blue bomber, the little blue guy is just as recognizable. But if you ask an older arcade player they'd probably say Pac Man as Mario wasn't always known as Mario, but as Jumpman. Namco just hasn't whored out the Pac character, hence why he has fewer games, Mario is Nintendo's mascot, so whenever there was new hardware they'd put a Mario title out for it, or in the case of the CD-i license the character for another system.

Megaman isn't as recognizable for people that aren't gamers, unlike Pac Man and Mario.

He was known as jumpman for (as far as I know) one game.

For the record, I knew incredibly little about Megaman until only a year ago. However I've yet to find a gamer or even a non-gamer who doesn't know who Mario is, simply because he's iconic of the video game industry.

Pac Man is simply not an icon of video games. However one could say he's an icon of Atari or arcades, as that's where a lot of his time was spent.

And even for older gamers, Mario is likely to still be the more recognisable of the two. In fact, older gamers will have known his earliest incarnation as Jumpman and how he was changed to Mario. Pac Man kind of died out, Mario is still living on to this very day.
