So, no one has said anything about supporting Rudy Giuliani, but in case anyone is, I'll throw this out there:

That was disturbing. But yeah, I believe that both Giuliani and Edwards dropped out of the race today. Word is that Giuliani will be throwing his support to McCain but no word so far as to whether Edwards will support Obama or Clinton.

Basically. When it's getting near the end and you've not won a single primary it is a good sign that it's time to give up and save what money you have left for another campaign later.

So I looked at my "everyone else" ballot and noticed that Ralph Nader is running as a Green... and a Peace & Freedom candidate... so yeah looks like my primary vote is going to Nader. Yay Nader!

I can't quite understand why people vote for a candidate that isn't going to win.

Anyways, I'm voting for Hillary, since although she's quite horrendous at interacting with laypeople, her policy making isn't that bad.

Because you're supposed to vote for who you want as president, not who you think people will vote the most for. The reason other candidates have low votes is for that very same reason. People band wagoning.

I saw Hillary speak at my school and I liked what she had to say. However, there's something about her that I'm leery of. What exactly, I don't know. I didn't vote in the primaries because I couldn't decide who I liked more between Obama and Clinton. Neither of them have said much in favor of gay rights. And that's my primary concern.

Then you want Obama. He's second closest to my beliefs for gay rights (first being Edwards).

I'm curious as to how much you know about our nations budget?

First off we owe the UN a ridiculous amount of money...

Arrears and late payments
As referenced above, the US has accrued a large amount of debt, or arrears, to the UN. (Arrears refer to the portion of a state's assessment that remains unpaid after it is due). By 2005, the US owed $963.1 million in total to the UN in dues to the regular and peacekeeping budgets. At the same time, the US gave $8.7 billion to voluntary causes in 2003, the last year the UN released information on donations to programs funded in this manner.

Here is the budget statement for just the increases in the DoD's budget

We spent 600 Billion last year on the Military
For your own reference, I'll put down for education budget for the fiscal year of 2009

We spent, 96 billion in 2007 on our Education..

Consider this -- the Army spends approximately $35,000-$50,000 to train a new recruit from the time the individual walks into a recruiter station until he reaches his first duty station, depending on if he goes to Basic Training, Advanced Individual Training or if he goes to One Station Unit Training. This cost represents costs from the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, U.S. Military Entrance Processing Command, and the U.S. Training and Doctrine Command.

Teachers make more then soldiers...Soldiers who every day their life is at risk defending those rights you hold so dear..

Just for your Reference..

Still think the military needs a budget cut? Or would you rather people Like Myself, One Shot One Kill, and Dirk Ralthar end up getting shafted?

Well if they take the soldiers out of Iraq like Obama/Clinton promises, then that'll definitely lower military costs. Ya?

And soliders' wages are lower than Teacher's based on base pay. However the soldiers get allowances to pay for clothing and food too. And if they're stationed away, they really don't have any expenses to worry about.

They also get the huge scholarship to pursue any occupation they could want, as well as a ton of other side benefits.

Spartan, you're letting your bias get a hold of you because you are in the military. But let us look at what you said...

96 billion on education last year. 600 billion on military. That is over 6x more on military in one year. Does that seem a bit wrong to you? Explain how ending the war that we never should have started in the first place is going to shaft you. Have you been sent out of the country at all? No, you haven't. You still get your pay check, you still get your GI Bill.

Look back at your schools. When was the last time the library was updated, the textbooks? How much of a budget did they get? How current was the computer lab?

My school, and every school in the district? Got an update around 2000 because of the Y2K scare. Library was practically non-existant to anyone over the age of 8. My high school? Small, very little research material and almost nothing published after 1996 unless it was English literature. Our science department had equipment and models made in the 60s. Our spare textbooks in my world history class were so old they showed the U.S.S.R. as a country still!

As far as college goes, tuition has gone up every semester for the past three years. A lot of people can't afford to go anymore because financial aid has not changed to meet the demands of this tuition increase. When I graduated high school, full time at CSULB was around $1000 for full time, less if I remember right. Now it's $1600 for full time and it will be increasing again next semester, and the semester after that... because we don't get enough funding. The schools don't get enough money, so they put the burden on the students who really can't afford to pay.

There was a strike at my community college because the teachers hadn't gotten a raise in nearly six years, but the administrators had. Same thing nearly happened at CSULB my first semester.

Oh, and the teachers have to supply their own chalk, markers, copies, etc because the schools "can't afford to pay for them anymore". One of my professors last year resorted to hiding spare chalk in the classroom just to make sure she would have some. This is at a major university!

When I say I want more to go to education I don't just mean teacher's paychecks, because unlike you I am thinking of more than my own personal interests. I want students to be able to have access to accurate books and be taught in safe and modern facilities. I want people to be able to afford a college education without having to plunge themselves into debt while working four jobs so that they barely have time to do the homework. But to do that the schools need more money. Yes, it would be nice if the teachers made more as well but that isn't the most important issue.

Actually Elara, if you do a bit of research into schools, you'd realize that budget is hardly the problem. I did a bit of research on a huge amount of funding taht was supposed to go to my state schools recently, and you know what I discovered?

More money went towards the principles than the teachers or the supplies. The fact is, management is taking all the money, leaving teachers and supplies to fend for themselves. An EXTREMELY small amount of money in schools are actually sent towards letting the schools function, and way more is sent towards management.

So yeah, the students and teachers could both use a ton more money, but they don't need to take it from the military, they just need to be allowed to use what they've been given.

That said, as far as education goes, I think that instead of having these public schools, the United States government should instead encourage the opening up of private schools, and then fund the students, so that they could afford to go to these private schools. No rules about which school they go to, no sudden problems over schools getting to little money, jsut a bit of spending on us who want to get an education.

This would not only make it so that something other than a bueracracy is running the school system, but it would encourage competition among schools, so that one school would have a real and strong reason to be better than another.

Of course, you won't find many politicians in agreement.

Yeah, it's not that there isn't money, it's that it's not being used properly. When I was a freshman, the school got a huge grant for the technical and arts departments. They were supposed to build a real theater, and it was supposed to be done a year after I graduated.

You know what? I graduate in four months. I've heard about the theater once. ONCE. We've seen almost none of that grant money.

That is the case often, but there are also many situations where budget cuts are preventing updates. Money going to the schools should be regulated so it gets spent how it is supposed to and not used to increase the administrator's paychecks!

And that still doesn't change the fact that we spend way too much on the military... hell we spend more than the rest of the world combined! China, the second biggest spender on military budget spends approximately 10x less than us. Why so much on war? Why? If we cut even 5% we could pay our debt to the UN and have more money to fund the rest of the programs in this country. And, ya know, maybe we can work on diplomacy to solve conflicts instead of invading other countries.

Better than education, how about universal health care? We could have that. We could have both, so not only would our children be healthy they would be as smart as kids in the rest of the world. Our education system needs work, and we know it. We're taught to take tests, not to understand the concepts of what we are taught. In a 2003 study by the UNICEF we ranked 18/24! But again, overhauling our education system isn't free. Even if funding isn't the cause of our problems now, it's going to take more money than we put into it now to fix it.

I don't think that the privatization of education would accomplish anything, because there is just too much of a chance that more people would be excluded. "Private" automatically means that it would not be funded by the federal or state government which would mean that whoever funds the schools decides what is taught there and who gets in, and no amount of financial aid would change their standards. They tried to institute private schools here in California awhile back and it got voted down pretty fast.

It's not that I'm biased, I don't want to get fucked over by a bunch of liberals who can't do research into how our money is actually spent...

Vulkar got it in one Administration gets most of the money while the people who deserve get the crumbs...At the HS that FX and I go to, our current principle is taking all of the budget money under his command to dispense as he pleases to ensure that "The money goes to the right place" But your high school and our high schools are vastly different, The librarys at both my junior high, Middle School and hell even elementary school were well stocked with recent material, our current Library (I was a TA last year) we get new sets of text books every two years, and we get around 150-300 new reading books a year.

In regards to the china statement.

Look at their gear...they have all of the cast offs from the cold war...*cough*

All of their shit is russian made or Russian designs that THEY mass produce for cheap, were as we have to fucking BUY our own electronics designs from the Chinese or Taiwan cause they make it better then we can.

Shafting me is when I'm doing my EOD training and cause some jackass liberal decided to cut our budget we can't have an adequate training facility and due to that when I AM deployed (my job pretty much guarantees I'm going to Iraq or Afghan) I wasnt able to be instructed to the best of the abilities due to lack of a budget some soldier ends up missing a leg or an arm because "We cut the military budget cause our school system can't spend its money effectively"

Do you know how the GI Bill works?

Soldiers put money into it out of their pay, you know that 13k a year that PFC's make?

While we chose to contribute the max is 650 a month (out of our 1500) and the min is 100...

5% of our budget means how many lives? I don't know can't give you a figure but I guarantee its no the officers that will get shafted its the people actually on the ground fighting..

I have to agree. The second people start using "liberal" and "conservative" as insults I quit listening to them.

And notice that you're complaints are about inadequate training... which is education. Doesn't matter what field you are in, it's the same problem that I have.

As for the quip about China... okay, what about the UK? They have a military on par with our own... they spend about $60 billion a year.
