Skynet's not far along now.
Actually the Asimo was introduced way back when I was in high school. It'll probably take even longer before they get this thing off the ground. Reminds me of the Mechanized Propulsion Systems guys who come around to anime conventions every year swearing up and down that this is the year their mech starts walking and so on. I always thought the Asimo walked like an elderly Asian lady. (Last edited by Rogue on 11-14-07 07:42 PM) |

Wow the animetrix comes to mind.
But it's pretty amazing to see what kinds of technology are coming out these days. |

Yeah, ASIMO isn't all the new. And, it's not as advanced as Sony's QRIO was before the project was placed on hold. Although smaller, the QRIO was at least able to do a far range more activities that the ASIMO. And, ASIMO requires programming for almost 90% of its actions while QRIO was meant to be completely stand-alone, like its smaller AIBO counterparts.
And, if you actually keep up with Japanese robotics, there are far more interesting things being developed than the ASIMO. QRIO: Dancing QRIO bots: Robot Suit that increases your strength 10-fold: Japanese Android DER: Landwalker: Etc.... (Last edited by BREW Ninja on 11-15-07 06:07 PM) |

One thought comes to mind...
Terminators. Robots in disguise. More than meets the eye. |

However, just because the robot speaks Japanese doesn't mean that it can't be programmed for English. And, just because ASIMO is being developed by Honda, doesn't make it any different from the other robotics being made by other Japanese companies. You do realize Honda is a Japanese company, right? And, that ASIMO also speaks Japanese? The Honda company in Japan keeps an ASIMO around to use as a receptionist, which means that the robot does speak Japanese as well. Almost all of the top technologies and innovations seem to pop out of Japan (except Nokia, that's Finnish). Even though it appears that ASIMO is acting on his own in this rendition, it actually isn't. ASIMO still requires programming to do what it does, which includes this pseudo-exploration mode. Just like all computers, it needs instruction. The only difference between ASIMO and QRIO is that ASIMO doesn't employ an active self-motivated AI. At least not the last publicized versions. The most recent ASIMO progress has begun implementing a learning curve on the robot so that it functions similar to that of a small child, learning through experience, but still requiring parameters for learning. As always, best to do the research as well. Or, just keep up with something. It doesn't hurt to learn and everything is an adventure. Including being condescending and bitter. I told you Disney does that to you. (Last edited by BREW Ninja on 11-16-07 11:00 PM) |

QRIO was also going to be marketed at about $5000 per robot. But, the project was pulled from commercial production until more research could be made into possibly integrating the robot tech into something bigger and more useful. About the size of ASIMO, but retain the same functionality as that of QRIO.
This Engadget article talks about Sony killing the AIBO and QRIO projects. Something ASIMO doesn't do, Tai Chi: QRIO was originally designed to be a companion robot, with the ability to connect to your network's WIFI, download and read your e-mail, RSS Feeds, or other items to you, interact and play games, and be a mini-butler. Just for the sake of simplicity, I removed your layout.
If I remember right, there was a guy in Alaska who built and then sold his own mecha that he was able to get to shoot nails and fire. Still have yet to find footage of it. I dunno, which is better though--having a robot with smooth and fluid movements or have calculated "robotic" moves? |

I remember the story about that guy with the mecha, but never heard anything beyond that he was merely building one. I didn't realize that he had succeeded in getting the thing to work.
I'd prefer the robotics to be fluid, but not too humanistic. I'd want a QRIO if it wasn't for the expense price, that is. |

I never kept up with this kinda thing. Mostly because I didn't know these things even existed. But I'm very impressed. Sure there's a long way to go and a lot of work to do on these, but think of the potential.
The land walker could develop into something that moves just as fast as cars possibly, the android could become more life-like (which is the one thing that creeps me out) and the smaller robots could become bigger or something. I'm kinda hoping something like Chobits would happen. Lol but stop before it becomes the animetrix. XD |

As far as robots, im not really interested in persecoms ( Chobits ). Mainly because it could cause all sorts of problems in my honest opinion. Maybe I just have that fear of super-advanced technology. | |||

Well, I just dont like humanoid computers. I blame it on CABAL from Tiberium Sun.
