I was just thinking, would anybody be interested in doing some type of Instant Messanger RP? I've been wanting to do one, and I thought at least one more person would be into it.

I was in a huge MSN RP once, but it didn't really work because it could only happen when everyone was online, or people could miss hugely important events.

I'm not going to be able to be in, sorry.

I guess I'll join, even though AIM RPs can be awkward due to the facts Vulkar has already made.

Also, is there really any reason to do an IM RP? The only thing I can think of that would make an IM RP needed is an RP with less plot, character development and descriptive writing than a forum based RP.

Not sure why you think it doesn't have those things. It's just RPing in a different environment. It takes the waiting out of RPing. Of course if you have a lot of people, it doesn't.

The problem is that you have to have everyone online at the same time. Also, people involved may have to leave, which would pretty much halt the whole RP. At least with forum based ones everything is pretty much automatically and publicly archived so everyone can continue when they can.

Besides the odd little random RP, I think forums are better.

But whatever, I'm in!

Well, I've never actually done multiple person IM RPs (by multiple, I mean more than 2). And personally, they get more character development, cause there's only the 2 of you.

Well, the problem with IM RPGs (I'v been in numberous ones.) Is the timing.

If you have a great amount of people, your going to have issues of who will type next. And if you can type 80+ wpm, and your partner can only type 10 wpm (words per minute) your going to have a fluency issue, and some people are going to jump ahead, ignoring what the slow typer is going to say, or not even giving him a chance to even take part.

If you can get past that (of one of the bigger issues) then IM RPs can go smoothly, since I've been in quite a few. Most of them either never finish because it's hard getting more then 2 people back into the damn chatroom, or people just get board/never get back on.

I think we could do this well, but what about an online game of D&D, we could have the DM do the rolls for everyone, and go around in a specific order, making it easier to give people time to think and what not.

While the thought crossed me in the past, something like that would be impossible. Anyone whos played D&D knows that it's possible to spend over 8 hours joking around have having fun in the character creation alone. And I've never seen a group of people actually stay online long enough to do something like that.

Honestly, you'd have better luck if it was on a board based D&D game, but even then it would get tedious waiting for the DM to tell you, every post, if you succeeded or failed in a roll.
