I just got better at a game without playing it for ages... OMG I can actually play F-Zero now!?!
Yeah, I dug out my SNES yesterday, and decided to pop in F-Zero this morning. I had a record for being utterly useless at this game, unable to get past the first track in first place, or even being able to finish the second track. It's been about two, maybe even three years since I've played it, I'm pretty tired right now having woken up quite early, and I just came first in every race... And I don't particularly like, and therefore don't play often, racing games... So managing to complete grand prix is just... OMG ME HAPPY!!! And that's made me wonder, have you ever suddenly played a game you weren't particularly good at after not playing it for AGES and find you are good at it? |

But, you have done other games that made you better at F-Zero, and that constitutes practice. | |||

Masters of Orion.
Like back in the day I did not understand it quite well. Now that im older and I actually have the DOS game on my PC, I can understand it and actually have fun with it. However getting good at this game is a little challenging, depending on what you name your ship and squad depends on the difficulty of the game. Its hard to explain it, but like however many Vowels are in your name as well as the Squad you are in depends on what situation you will be in the game. Its kinda messed up. Oh yeah, and Castlevenia (However you spell it). I never understood it as a kid, now im having a blast with it. |

I find that when I learn how to do something, then take a long break. I am normally better at it.
From typing, to video games, to frisbee...etc I find it annoying at times... The only time I get much better at things is if I take a break with it. (Though I doubt it will happen that way with Japanese) |

I did it again!
I was at my local arcade and I went on a driving game that I never particularly got the hang of. It's like a motorbike racing thing with large things to sit on for the controls, and it moves about with your character and everything so it's pretty fun to play. Now, I've NEVER seen anyone actually complete a race on it. Did it yesterday, I actually completed a race! Although I lost the second one. The whole thing is time based. Run out of time, you lose. It doesn't matter what place you finish in, however you get more points for the next round the faster your finish. I just didn't get enough to be able to complete the next round. |

I've done this before!
The last time I can remember was with the game Shinobi. I couldn't beat the last boss for the life of me. I stopped playing for a month then decided to give it another go. I beat it on my 2nd try. |

I'm like this with my guitar playing. I feel like I'd play like shit when I pick it back up, but I end up mastering things that I'd have to try and try to do... But I guess its just human psychology. My theory is that when you keep practicing, a break is needed, otherwise you will just keep doing it wrong. For example, say whenever event A happens, you press the B button. You'll keep doing it by habit and keep failing, or win by a fluke. Now say you took a week off of playing it. It won't be muscle memory to hit B at event A. You'll be using your brain instead.
Wow... I just linked music and video games, yet again. Its the same concept of playing a musical scale with ANY instrument. You need to stop to get better. Its not your state of mind, its your muscle memory. |
