It's a pretty old anime I think, but it's awesome, too. I didn't see any threads about it at first glance so I thought that I'd see if there were any other fans here in xeogaming.

Blue Seed really confused me at first about the Kushinada's and the Matsuri, but after watching the series a couple times I got it lol.

I think it's even been on tv a few years ago on the anime network. The creator came out with a Blue Seed Beyond (sequel) that was only four episodes long and kinda sucked. -__-

I borrowed the full series from Kaijin. I love it. I remember seeing it up to episode 6 when I was but a wee lad. I remember it being drawn better, but the only thing I could compare it to was American stuff and Akira, but seeing as how Akira was a movie, I didn't count it.

This one was definitely one of my favorites, for sure.

Seeing as a lot of the series relies on a general knowledge of Japanese folklore and traditions, I'm not surprised people often find it a confusing series to watch. I watched it once, was horribly puzzled, and then took a course in mythologies around the world. Studying the Japanese myths helped me make sense of a lot of the things in Blue Seed.

For example: Kushinada was one of eight daughters belonging to an old couple. The Orochi, an eight-headed dragon, came once a year to devour one of the couple's daughters, and they were powerless to stop it. Susa-no-oh was a greater god, and the brother of Amaterasu, the sun goddess, and he offered to beat the Orochi and save Kushinada in return for being allowed to marry her. He transformed the girl into a hair comb to hide her from the Orochi, and trapped it by creating a pavilion with eight gates, and eight bowls of sake (japanese rice wine). When the orochi put its heads through the gates to drink the offering, the gates slammed shut, trapping it. Susa-no-oh cut off the Orochi's heads, and saved Kushinada, whom he married.

Seriously, if you go out and do a little reading, you'll find that a lot of stuff in anime starts making a whole lot more sense than it did before.

I've never heard the Susa-no-oh story told that way. That's really interesting actually.

See in my opinion when animes are based off of real Japanese legends, that makes it much more interesting.

Agreed. Its always fun if you have something in the real world to base it off of.

One of the best examples of an anime that makes no sense at all without a good grounding in Japanese folklore is Urusei Yatsura, known in the States as Lum-Lum, by Rumiko Takahashi. Nearly every character in the series is the representation of some figure in folklore, and without knowing what those things are, it's almost impossible to figure out what's going on. Bo-BoBo BoBo-BoBo is another series that's hard to follow without some japanese background, but at least it's funny even without that. Like I said before: if you do a bit of homework, everything becomes clear.

It looks interesting. I thought you meant Blue Gender...

That was stupid.

I'll check it out.
