Strange, I was talking to my recruiter about old school music and she now counts Goo Goo Dolls as old. To me I was like, dude that was in my middle school days? That's old now? That wasn't but like 4 maybe 6 years ago. So far all the bands that I'm really into NOW are considered old. Not a problem. I mean it's not that bad but geez...it makes me feel old and I'm only 19. =P So what do you count as old school?

No one remembers DC Talk so that's way old now.

I would have to say Smash Mouth counts as something old. (That and Ricky martin, lmao)

Back in the day there was that one song that cought everyone's attention. Rock star or something like that.

But to me, I dont listen to today's music. So really I dont know.

That was "All Star" and that was in the sound track of that movie that had the heroes with the guy that turned invisible only if you didn't look at him.

That was actually my fav song by them.

I've got a few okays with today's music but now it's just gone to hell. what ever happened to Matchbox 20.... and all those one hit wonders like Vanilla Ice and Thong Song =P

Songs that were released at least 3-4 months are considered old nowadays.

I used to love Smash Mouth. I have there first three albums (I think they've had 2 more that no one cares about). Some of my favorite songs are from their first album. It's a lot better, more rock than pop.

I think for something to be old school (which is different than old) they have to not be around anymore (not always, the Stones are still around).

I think we've reached the pointed that if it's more than 4 years old it's "old skool."

Why 4 years? Because with every new cycle of high schoolers, the type of music that's popular changes and what the class before them liked is considered retro.

Seriously, talk to a high school freshmen now about "what's good" and it's bands that you've never even heard of because you aren't listening to the radio any more. At least that's the way it is for me.

So in short, things considered old:
- Jennifer Lopez's singing career
- Backstreet Boys, N*SYNC, and the whole boy band era of the late '90s (Joey's on "Dancing with the Stars" for crying out loud)
- Will Smith's rap career
- Ricky Martin and much of the Latin wave, including Enrique Iglesias and 98 Degrees (and any other half-assed music groups) trying to release Spanish-speaking albums because it was hot.
- The sudden popularity of Carlos Santana (though he wasn't so popular in his hey-day)
- Spice Girls, Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, Christina Aguilera, and the like.
- Lou Bega, Shaggy, Tal Bachmen, Sisqo (and his "Thong Song"), etc
- No Doubt, although Gwen's solo career would probably be considered old now too

If you have said "Oh yeah!" or anything of the like to this list, YOU are old (at least to high schoolers these days).

But outside of music, things that make me sigh from the "old days"
- Dharma and Greg
- Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, The Adventures of Sinbad, Roar
- Any of the cartoons I listed in the other thread in this forum
- Disney (and other companies) actually putting out 2D animated features

Christina Aquilera just released an album and Gwen Stefani just released a song about 2 weeks ago. They aren't considered old.

Oh, I know, but since most of the younger crowd don't quite remember the "Genie in a Bottle" days or the fact that she isn't near as talked about as back then when fans would duke it out over her and Britney, she garners the "old school" title along with Gwen Steffani as a member of No Doubt. The Candy Man video is pretty good, I must say.

I jested that Gwen could be considered old since after her solo career hasn't had very much flare even with the release of an album, but no she's still not old skool yet.

This thread reminds me of how much I utterly despised the 90s.
Not like the 2000s are much better, but damn. Smash Mouth was a travesty.

Also, would Vanilla Ice be considered old school? I mean, he is kinda old, and he did set white people back by about 50 years...
