I'm pretty sure that comes out of the episode where Simon and River visit this village where River is called a witch when she inadvertently reveals she's psychic, and just as she's about to be burned, Mal and Zoe pop up to reclaim them (Jayne, of course, up above with a big gun at hand). I think that was the episode that was called Safe.
