Condom device wins Most Beautiful award

Design Indaba update: a condom applicator designed to help AIDS prevention has been named the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa by Dutch designer Jurgen Bey.

Bey, who was in Cape Town to speak at the Design Indaba conference last week, selected the product from a shortlist of 15 products at the Design Indaba Expo.

The applicator, invented by Willem van Rensburg and designed by industrial designer Roelf Mulder of South Africa’s XYZ Design, allows a condom to be put on easily and rapidly.

The user holds the device with the thumb and forefinger of both hands, pulling the condom down over the penis in a single rapid movement. See video demonstrations of the product here and here.

It is hoped the design will encourage the use of condoms, thereby helping reduce the spread of AIDS.

The applicator, which was selected for the SAFE exhibition at MoMA in New York two years ago and is in the museum’s permanent collection is now being marketed and sold under the Pronto brand.

These are a wonderful innovation considering how much fussing over condoms prevents many men from bothering with them at all.

Any thoughts?

That is actually fairly cool and I think it is a great idea. The only problem there is when I learned about how to put on a condom (though my teacher used a banana not a dildo as the video shows) she told us that the tip had to be pinched to prevent air from getting in and possibly causing it to break on ejaculation. doesn't seem like this little contraption takes care of that.

Also, right now it seems like they only have one size, I checked their website. So those who would use something like a Magnum condom wouldn't be able to make use of it, even if a condom can be stretched quite a bit, some men feel uncomfortable unless they have one their size.

Over all though, I think it's a really cool idea and since they cost the same as regular condoms, I can see this catching on if it makes its way to the U.S.

Yeah, I thought about how they should have a reservoir tip or something to accommodate the end.

I figure now that they have this size covered, it's not difficult to move on to making larger sizes.

Epic.

One word that describes how awesomely simple this invention would make things.

From my point of view, however, I don't think it's THAT hard to put one on...

I think it's stupid that this is aimed just towards AIDS in Africa. I mean, this also can solve many other problems.

But it is a pretty cool design. Anyone else see Ziploc coming out with something like this for storing food?

I bet it would be expensive.

Seriously, How much do condoms go for these days? 75 Cents for one? Hell I bought a pack of 5 for 3.99.

I would think a single one would cost 1.50 for something like that.

But on the other hand. Its alot more handier than *Rip* *Slip* *Cover* *engage*.

Now its *Push* *engage*.

Actually, I looked at the website and it said that they are the same price as regular condoms, so that's a good thing.

Anywho...enlighten me please...but do condoms really prevent AIDS? Grant it, this is coming from a girl who's information comes from 12 years of Catholic School, but hey...I was told that condoms really don't prevent AIDS and many other STDs because there is still a chance that fluids can get through any microscopic holes. Always made sense to me since condoms are manmade, so I never thought of them as "perfect" anyway.

Condoms dont cure or prevent AIDS...it HELPS to prevent.

Theres always that little matter of it breaking or seeping through due to the expiration of the condom.

They basically do prevent AIDS, because you get AIDS from the semen, which is blocked by the condom. I think that there might be one or two STDs that have a small chance of getting through though.

Found a web page that is pretty much backed up by any health classes I've taken so far, including human sexuality.

http://www.thebody.com/cdc/factcond.html

That should cover your question Katana.

somehow I doubt that the level of difficulty involved in putting on a condom is whats stopping people from using them.

generally, when one is concerned about the contraction of an STD that has spread like wildfire across ones immedeate area, and is faced with a choice between learning to use a condom or take a 99.9 or so % risk of getting said disease, they'll take the former.

I think this is more for the benefit of north americans in all their glorious hedonistic lazyness.

so how about that male birth control pill?
