Recently a Congressman, Keith Ellison, was sworn in on a Quran instead of a Bible, by his request, because as a Muslim the Bible would obviously mean nothing to him were he to swear in on it.
Article: http://wcco.com/topstories/local_story_004160601.html Prior to the oath-taking, there was much controversy among conservatives who believed that Ellison should swear on the Bible because all Congresspeople before him had (which isn't true as someone swore by the Hebrew Bible in 2005). Some had said that this would encourage Muslim extremists and undermine the American way. Article Another article There were more articles before with more of what the conservatives and other Congresspeople said, but I can't find them. One Congressman had made the suggestion that this would make for all sorts of crazy things people would want to swear on: Jews on the Torah, Buddhists on the I Ching, atheists and agnostics on Darwin's Origin of the Species, it goes on. So what book or item (opening it up to include items) do you feel permeates your soul (should you believe in one or not) enough to swear by it? Any and all books, publications, and tangible items (your children, favorite DVD, a bucket of chicken, etc) are open for the choosing. (Last edited by Q on 01-29-07 05:13 PM) |

Wow...that actually makes sense to me. :p I can see why they want people to swear on the Bible, the whole truth thing is important...people can still lie, sure, but hey...merh...I'd rather not go off on something that I don't know too much about anyways. :p
But yeah...swearing on the Bible is completely useless if you don't believe in it... I don't think I could think of anything else I'd swear on though...well...PS3 maybe. |

Why do they think that it's crazy for people of different religions to swear on their own bibles? After all, isn't one of the basic foundations of the American constitution freedom of religion?
I don't know what I would swear on.. Probably Darwin's Origin of Species... |

Originally posted by Belial Im no expert on Goverment history or anything, but I suspect the foundation of America "In God We Trust." to be a bit of a support on swearing on the Holy Bible. True, people can lie, but then theres that one amendment on "Freedom of Religion" and whatnot...perhaps the goverment is finally doing something for a change about that statement on people who decide to come here to America with different religious backgrounds and whatnot. |

I think that it is good that he swore on the holy book of his religion instead of the Bible, it means more to him then. I don't think we should swear on holy books at all though when taking seats in government positions (you know, that whole seperation of church and state thing?). However if it gives the actual person swearing a greater feeling of responsibility to that oath because he/she is giving it on a symbol of something dear to them then perhaps it does some good.
As for me... well, Wiccans don't really have a universally sacred text. Closest we come is the Wiccan Rede, so I would say that I would choose either the Rede or a Pentacle... because lets face it, swearing on the Principia Discordia to uphold order just seems silly. ... Of couse, there is always the Scott Cunningham book Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practicioner, many Witches revere it as much as if it were our Bible from what I have seen.
