just need a good idea of what I should look for when I get out of AIT. I have Pinnacle for dvd burning I believe. You can make movies with it. It's way simpler than the other software I have. Any suggestions?

Well, I assume you have a PC, and therefore you don't have iMovie, so that's out of the question. But if you are serious, I'd recommend getting something in the Adobe strain.

Pinnacle is a good piece of software, but if you're going into the more professional realm, Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Audition, and Macromedia Flash are excellent programs as well.
I have Windows Movie Maker on the laptops, as well as DVD creation and editing software that came with my newest laptop, and After Effects to handle all of my graphics/special effects needs. I usually import things off the camcorder in Windows Movie Maker at a high-res DV-AVI format, edit the clips out and export them as DV-AVI, import them into After Effects to do whatever else needs to be done (darkness correction, special effects, titles, motion tracking, etc), and then finish the job in either After Effects or Windows Movie Maker. It also depends on what your ending media will be. If you're shooting for DVD quality video, then the higher end software is better. If you're just making vids with the full intention of placing them on the web (own site, YouTube, Google Videos, etc), then you don't need the high-end stuff. I work with both web and DVD quality, so my web stuff is easy. It never leaves Windows Movie Maker. I only use After Effects for anything else. |

I'm in the same boat as True Flight. I've seen some pics on After Effects and I'm impressed with what it can do. What I would like to do is piece together different clips and add subtitles (to existing clips) with special or fancy fonts (whether in Japanese or English). If Pinnacle or After Effects and do these, I will be looking for them.

Depending on how computer savvy you are, adobe can be awesome stuff, it takes a bit of getting used to and the controls can be kind of confusing, but with some practice you can do some amazing things
as for Windows Movie Maker, I actually quite enjoy it, it's very simple, user friendly, and if you get the pro version (comes in service pack 2 I believe) you can actually make some fairly professional looking videos, it's great for those who have little to no budget. |
