Originally posted by Elara I feel you on this one, but it's regarding the phone button on the steering wheel in my mom's car. I use it frequently to call Brandon while I'm driving and seems like someone spilled soda (since you can freaking see the sugary trails) right into it during the month and week I was working the other center. The button hasn't been the same. It takes effort to push in. First world problems. And really, never giving over one of the related parties a copy of the papers? Damn. Fuck feeling like everything I like eventually gets corrupted by going mainstream and my having to frequently move onto other things once certain groups pick up on something. There are lots of things I'll never abandon no matter how popular they get, but I'm very weary of it all. Comic-Con used to be a happy place for me. Essentially... fuck speculation buyers. Looking forward to tea with you guys next weekend. Lots of nerd-out on.
Looks like I'm spending this weekend indoors. Bran's at work and everyone else is unavailable. Or they're avoiding me. ![]() |

Brandon's hosting people downstairs with the external hard drive. Poo...
Someone posted this as a note on Facebook earlier. Just going to go ahead and post it here. Name something that relaxes you. - Sitting in a big, comfy chair, reading a book, with the smell of coffee filling the room. There are other things, I'm sure, but that was the first thought that came to mind. Post a picture that makes you feel good about yourself. I'm assuming this wants me to post a picture of myself and not, say, a photo of a puppy or something. All right.. Here's the most recent picture of me, taken a week and a half ago: ![]() What is some of your favorite music? - Celtic rock, sea shanties, thrash metal, sometimes I just listen to ambient noise videos of rain or a coffeehouse and play another video at the same time of instrumental jazz or blues guitar. List your three favorite scents. - Coffee, rose tea, and a tie between woods and leather. There's a Native American trading post in Arizona I love that smells of herbs, leathers, and wood. Whenever I buy blankets from them, I go forever without washing them because I don't want to lose that smell. How do you ground yourself or recharge? - Hang around at home. Ideally doing the stuff in answer to the first question. Any ways you treat or spoil yourself? - After work, I sometimes hit up Whole Foods or CostPlus World Market. Both are places I've been known to drop massive chunks of paychecks without regret. Do you have a creative past-time? - I wish I could say writing, but I've had writer's block practically since birth. I can come up with ideas and never write them down or come up with a good ending. I edit photos for this little ongoing project I do about trying new things. What helps you fall asleep? - I have trouble falling asleep in total silence. I need the TV on, with something comforting like a show or movie I know really well. I can't sleep if someone is snoring, although I can sleep through snoring if they go to sleep after I do. This means I always have to go to bed before Brandon does. Favorite beverages? - Rose tea or Earl Grey Creme with cream and sugar, warm apple cider in the fall, Tahitian vanilla mead, mint and lavender lemonade, and sipping chocolate in Little Tokyo. Iced coffee too, depending on who makes it. Have you ever received a letter or written one to someone else? - Many, but none lately. What makes you feel powerful, what breathes life into you? - ![]() Comfort food? - Bread and cheese, Tim Tam slams, mashed potatoes (especially Popeye's), sausage gravy slathered on home fries, and ramen with chashu as big and thick as a pork chop. What's your favorite thing to do at night? - Depends on if I've got anything planned and what time of year it is. In the summer, my favorite thing is seeing a performance of Shakespeare in the park, eating bread and cheese, drinking bellinis and cider, and listening to the occasional yelping coyotes. Any other time of year, getting to go out for ramen is perhaps my favorite thing to do at night. I'm not much of a night person these days unless I'm out of town. If you could go back to any three eras what would they be? - I know we romanticize the fuck out of the past and all previous eras have their share of negative shit no one wants to live through (plagues, bigotry, extreme sexism, torture, wars, occupations with high mortality rates, lack of sanitation, etc), but if we go with the idealized, anachronistic versions we've come to embrace, sure I guess I would live in the late Victorian/Edwardian period when I could have (in the highly unlikely chance) met Mark Twain. My next choice would probably be Feudal Japan, particularly how it's shown in "Usagi Yojimbo," except with humans in place of the animals. Lastly, the 1990s. Yes. I miss that time of progress, prosperity, and believing that you could be anything. And field trips! The glorious field trips! Your favorite things to wear? - Renaissance faire garb, particularly while at a faire. If you could be immortal or have an extremely long life span what would you pick and why? - If those are the options, I don't fully understand the purpose of living the really long life that eventually means dying. It also depends on whether or not the immortality comes with looking young forever or if it turns into that Greek myth where I become so old and shriveled I just end up as a grasshopper. Name something positive you have done for yourself or someone else in the last two weeks. - Bought a friend a load of meat from Whole Foods since she mentioned to me over the phone that all she and her daughter had to eat was rice over the coming week 'til she gets paid. Both are heavily allergic to different foods and she has Celiac disease. If you had to come up with ten words to describe your life story so far, what would they be? - "Wow. What the hell did everything go so horribly wrong?" One thing you like about your appearance? - I'm not fishing for compliments when I say I have difficulty finding anything I like in my appearance. Something that makes you feel better after a hard day? - These days, killing time walking around stores like Whole Foods and Cost Plus World Market. Having "date night" whenever we get the chance and looking forward to fun things on the horizon are also high on my list of things help me get through weeks at work that slog. If you have one, name a favorite book or poem. - I have a few favorite books: "Geek Love," "The Diaries of Adam and Eve," "American Gods," and "Brave New World," among others. Do you look forward to the spring? - Who doesn't? Which area of the sciences do you enjoy the most? - I've always been into marine biology. If you could own a classical statue in the form of any figure from myth, religion, or even modern fiction, who would you choose? - This is a rather random question, but yeah, I suppose I'd want a marble statue of Hades and Persephone, particularly once she takes her place as the rightful queen of the Underworld. People mostly ever display her abduction, which seems more of a Roman thing since they're titled things like "The Rape of Proserpina." Following the Greek tradition (especially since worship of Persephone and Demeter actually predates Greece and the rest of its gods), under her mother she was simply Kore (which pretty much translates to "little girl.") But with Hades she was able to expand to her full potential of power, becoming Persephone, whose name loosely translates to "Bringer of Destruction." Do you have a good relationship with your mother? - I'd say so, even if we argue a lot. We carpool to work together. What is your favourite mythological story? - I always revert back to Greek whenever people want to talk myth, so it's probably the story of Cupid and Psyche. Just the idea of the god of love falling in love himself and there are so many variations on the story. If you put on a big feast, what would you serve? - Lots and lots of roasted meats. How do you have fun? (What is your favourite 'Earthly Delight'?) - Going to new places and trying new things. Getting out of the house. Do you often look for hidden messages and meanings? - As an introvert that's sometimes all I do and fixate on them. What was your favourite game as a child? - One group standing on one side of the playground and another group on the other side and we'd just kick a couple balls back and forth to see how high and far we could get them. I was always the only girl. Have you ever received an award or special position? - Sure, several when I was in school. If a revolution was about to happen in your country, would you be part of it? - Depends on why. Have you ever planned an act of revenge? - I want to say no? But I'm not sure. I have done things to be vindictive, but they wouldn't quite be classified as revenge or required any planning. Is your life moving too slowly or too fast? - I'm more inclined to say slow, but I don't think I could take faster at the moment. Do you prefer to stay in the shade? - Who doesn't? Skin cancer is not cute. If you could have any mural on your ceiling, what would it look like? - I suppose it would be of a giant squid and a sperm whale fighting, but now this gives me an idea to hang pictures or something. Do you enjoy the countryside? - Yes, very much, especially in the fall when we venture out for apple everything and to see actual foliage. Are you a romantic? - Secretly yes, but I'm terrible at putting it in practice and feel easily embarrassed. What is your favourite historic subject? - Difficult to chose just one subject and my interests are always in flux. Seems like I keep coming back to the Renaissance, particularly the last half of Elizabeth I's reign and beginning of James I's. I've also always been into the Old West. Do you prefer landscape paintings? - Not really. Are you interested in social issues? - Yes, but I'm rather disinclined to discuss them. |

Fuck you, piece of shit woman making a scene behind me at the Trader Joe's. I'm making three separate purchases for clients' lunches. There's another line and I make no apology that you couldn't walk out with your Speculoos cookies and mango salsa sooner than the three minutes it took me to ring up the orders. When she threw the fit, I turned and laughed at her. I would have given her some applause for her acting, but my hands were full of wallets and receipts. | |||

While the easy answer would be my grandparents, I miss having more of a social life wherein I saw friends every day and we hung out and wandered when the mood struck. These days I'm lucky if I see anyone other than Brandon on the weekend.
So, I guess I miss my college days. Late high school too. What less-than-mainstream TV show would you recommend? |

Brandon's at work 'til 11 and I feel like shit. It's been a few months. Fuck it.
What was the last... ...thing you ate? - A slice of last night's pizza, a bowl of cereal, and a plate of microwaved Trader Joe's chicken nuggets. Spaced out, but yeah, that was dinner. ...person you talked to on the phone? - I'm not sure. I have a few missed calls and a couple voice mails I haven't bothered to check. Probably my Mom to let her know I was running late picking her up. ...person you e-mailed/private messaged? - That dressmaker that left me hanging after I paid her for concept art and then didn't answer any of my questions. ...person you hugged? - Brandon. ...person you kissed? - Brandon. ...time you laughed? - Not entirely sure. I saw this gif today and that got a good laugh out of me: ![]() ...time you cried? - Again, not sure. ...movie you watched? - Uhhh... it was either "Amelie" on Netflix or "In The Heart of the Sea" on HBO Now. ...TV show you watched? - Amusingly it was "King of the Hill." Same thing I wrote last time I answered this. ...DVD you watched? - That copy of the BBC's 1984 production of "Much Ado About Nothing" that I keep taking out of the library. ...video tape you watched? - The last time I answered this I said I hadn't watched any tapes recently, and I'm pretty sure I haven't seen any since the last time I answered this meme. ...song you listened to? - "Wagon Wheel" by Old Crow Medicine Show ...book you finished? - "Chew" volume 11. I'm glad this series appears to be ending. ...heart-to-heart you had with someone? - Sort of having one right now with Bernie over FB Messenger. ...person you met? - Kaleb. Funny, the person I answered last time has since been fired from work. ...person who died in your life? - Unless I'm forgetting someone the answer is still my dad's sister, Aunt Jodi. She was one of the oldest people living with cystic fibrosis. ...new food you tried? - I guess that would be the chashu ramen at that place we went in Little Tokyo with Elara when she was visiting. ...new thing you tried (event, action)? - I apparently listed five things last time, so ah, fuck it, here's the last five again (UPDATE: 4/24/2016: Ditto UPDATE: 9/24/16 Ditto squared): 1. Tried caviar while having tea at the Huntington with Elara, Kaleb, and Stitch. 2. Walked through areas of the Madrona Marsh I hadn't before since it's usually underwater. 3. Made tea on the beach with a kettle heated by a bonfire. 4. Lugged candelabras, lace, and all the implements for a tea party to the Old Zoo ruins in Griffith Park, set up, and watched a performance of "The Tempest." 5. Drove the entire length of the Angeles Crest Highway and found a Jeffrey tree and a small mountain town with awesome cold brew coffee. ...time you went around the house in just your underwear? - Walked from my room to the bathroom like that a few hours ago. ...time you weren't fully sober? - Had a few drinks at a tiki bar on a Sunday when I was still working my shit job at the other center. I felt like I needed it just a little bit. ...you "geeked" out? - Hanging out with Elara and Kaleb at the anime shops in Little Tokyo, I suppose. Wait, we did go see a bunch of TV show costumes today at FIDM. ...thing you read in the bathroom? - "Saga" volume 6. ...bargain you made? - Can't remember the last exactly. What sticks out right now is my bootmaker calling me up to say he was upgrading the soles on the my new faire shoes for free. ...thing you planned? - Sort of trying to figure out what we're going to be doing tomorrow with Liz and her husband. ...award you won? - Hahahahaha, awards. We don't need no stinking awards. ...piece of toast you had? - Had some English muffins either last weekend or the weekend before. ...present you gave? - Bought my mom a scarf with an art nouveau print for her birthday, which was this past Monday. Also got her some snacks and chocolate from Trader Joe's. ...porno you saw? - Shit. No clue. (UPDATE 9/24/16: Same) ...song you sang in the shower? - Definitely still not singing in the shower. ...song you had stuck in your head? - It's a combination of "Wagon Wheel" and the opening theme for "Outlander." ...thing you marked on your calendar? - That we were going to have tea at the Huntington. ...errand you ran? - Picked up my library books I had on hold and then some stuff from the Japanese market for Elara. ...drink you had? - Had a mixture of Trader Joe's Moroccan mint iced tea and organic lemonade. ...cool thing you found? - Uh... a new route back to the office from the coastal road? It's one of those miss-a-turn-and-end-up-driving-off-a-cliff roads. ...time you brushed your hair? - Some time earlier in the week. ...person you talked to over AIM, YIM, etc? - Talking to Bernie right now. She wants to talk about a crisis she's having. ...thing you bought? - A couple books on one of my ancestors from Amazon.com. ...game you played? - Blackjack with the clients. ...new place you visited? - Apparently I listed five last time, so once again, fuck it (UPDATE: 4/24/2016: AGAIN ditto Fuck it. It goes double for always): 1. Wrightwood and some of its neat little coffee places and markets 2. The Little Saigon Night Market 3. Huntington Beach's Central Library 4. The Japanese garden at CSULB 5. Wolf sanctuary ...thing you celebrated? - Mom's birthday on Monday. ...dream you had? - Dreamt I was going to one of those storage unit auctions, which was happening in a Costco parking lot for some reason. Couldn't find parking so I just left the car idling and double-parked and when I turned around the car was gone. Went into the Costco to ask if anyone turned in any keys, thinking that perhaps someone parked my car and turned the keys in. Of course they didn't have them, so I told them my car was stolen. When they said they'd check the security footage, I shrunk away not wanting them to discover I just left it running. And then I woke up. ...thing you dressed up for? - Faire, probably. ...website you visited outside of the board? - Yelp and Facebook. Always. ...thing you really wanted, but couldn't get? - Not sure. ...movie you watched that you thought was underrated? - "Tarkan vs. the Vikings." It's actually immensely awful, but well-worth watching, even if you don't speak Turkish. It's just so bad that it's enjoyable. ...stage (concert, play, etc) show you saw? - It was either seeing "The Tempest" or the symphony playing the soundtrack for "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark." ...time you visited family? - Uh... saw my grandfather and Uncle Tony for Fathers Day. ...exercise you did? - Walked around the Trump National Golf Course with my clients. ...vacation you took? - The mini one Brandon and I took for our anniversary back in April. ...text message you sent? - Looks like it was to Jeremiah who was asking if I'll be at Wasteland Weekend. ...picture you set as your phone's wallpaper? - It's STILL the NCR ranger. |

OK, you convinced me, so I've been watching "Twin Peaks" as well. We're only at like episode 7 or so. The problem is, to watch the show together would have to be after Bran gets home from work, so I end up dozing off since it's so late.
It's funny watching it now after so many years of it getting referenced in things. View on YouTube View on YouTube "Vice Principals" finished. For me, it petered off. It got pretty good and then... plateaued, I guess? It took a weird turn and I'm not sure I even want it to come back for a second season. And come to think of it, I really can't commit the time or energy to following network and basic cable TV shows that go for like 26 episodes a season any more. For the most part, there's a definite quality difference between those and the ones that only go 8-13 episodes a season. |

I might have seen older, but the first one I can think of is the silent film, "A Trip To The Moon," which came out in 1902. You know the one. Moon with a human face gets hit in the eye with the capsule. It's on Netflix, but it's hand-colorized and plays bizarre, modern music along with it.
But now that I've looked it up to be sure, I've now seen the oldest film in the world: Roundhay Garden Scene from 1888: View on YouTube Wanna see it again? Yeah, apparently it holds the world record for oldest movie. ![]() How much bullshit is in your wallet? |

Originally posted by Xeoman Well, I was referring to "Vice Principals" when talking about watching a show that faltered near the end. It just... WTF? We're most of the way through the first episode of season 2. I'll admit, it's not going down as smoothly as the first season did, but it's still very watchable. I'm going to need another show to watch once this binge is through. I know "Supernatural" has become quite the elephant fandom in the room, but I just can't bring myself to watch it. ![]() |
