The footlockers are packed and the soldiers of the 206th Transportation Company in Opelika are ready to serve.

"With any deployment it's always a new experience," said CPT. Roderick Page, commander of the 206th Transportation Company.

For some of the 200-plus soldiers, this is not only their first assignment overseas; it's also their first deployment.

"As with any deployment there is some nervousness in to it," Page said. "But me, as commander, I have to stay strong and be the backbone for the soldiers."

As veteran leader with 17 years of military service, Page said the hardest part is leaving loved ones behind. He would know. He is leaving his wife and two sons -- seven and three -- at home in Georgia.

"I think about it everyday," he said. "When we first got alerted that we would be deployed, my whole thought process went toward them, more so than me deploying."

But, he added, staying in contact with family and loved ones is the most important thing.

"It's definitely hard," he said. "Having loved ones and leaving them behind is pretty much the biggest deal as far as deploying is concerned.

"It's hard on us, but it's harder on them."

That's what the deployment ceremony is for, he said, it's for the families.

It honors the city, he said, and gives the families a chance to see what it's all about.

"The primary purpose of the ceremony is to allow the loved ones to see their members in formation and what they are deploying with as far as unit strength is concerned," he said. "It also allows our higher command to recognize the soldiers that are deploying."

With a group 200 strong, it's expected to be a packed house for those honors.

The city of is hosting the ceremony for the unit on Wednesday, June 20 at 1 p.m. CT at Opelika High School (1700 Lafayette Parkway in Opelika). Following the ceremony, there will be a reception at the U.S. Reserve Drill Hall for the soldiers and their families.

The city leaders have also declared June 20 as "206th Day" in honor of the unit. For the day, businesses and residents are encouraged to fly American flags and display other patriotic bows and signs in a show of support for the soldiers and their families.
