Finally, when Xeolad woke up he promptly grabbed his Mentos for his everyday morning breakfast. Overnight, he had become a character from his favorite anime,Tenjho Tenge! His massive breasts resembled two melons, extremely juicy. This change strangely aroused him.

Then, Dragon's came out of the nipples of his breasts and ate a human. Burnination ensued when they realized that Arcanine had summoned the Soothsayer who ate some pie. It soon demanded for more food. Xeo would have none of that, so he refused to release his massive bouncing breasts, but his areolas still squirted bacon grease.

Yummy bacon grease.

He wondered, "How long will I be so greasy, because I smell like cookies and bees are swarming on my dog. Damn, I hope it gets hot so I can use it as an excuse, pretending to have a bitch fit and a large Coke."

Xeolad then stroked his throbbing penis, invisible to human eyes. However, Enzine was improving his ability to not necesarily do the Chicken Dance. Bored, he decided to go outside. He then embraced his magically delicious apple of 1000 deaths which is cool and stuff. Then he stuck his finger in large rotating blender blade, not pink, but blue. Not only did he find that the blender turned into a naked, old man, he also discovered that the blender was soaked in flaming napalm.

Realizing that dinner was ready, he dropped a candle into the oozy brine and sent a letter to the editor. So this story would make sense. But it failed and then he suddenly decided to go masturbate to images of XMtS's stack of female porn. Then turned out it was FURRIES! What a perverted life. He then sat down to a delicious dinner of "Just Over Five Words Per Post" sandwiches which were delicious, then Trogdor the Burninator appeared with very clear contact lenses on his now pearly blue eyes that turned this story around finally.

Averting from sexual themes, Xeolad declared he knew the secret of cheese. Of course he knew better than to meddle with Chuck Norris's roundhouse kicks but he enjoyed ruining his competitions reputation, by doing this, he created a time paradox. Finally, when Xeolad woke up...

I dont' think space is controlled by the government, it's just a bit hard for most to get funding and permits to do so.

You know what you do to learn? Watch debates, which are broadcasted on *gasp* CNN and other news stations! You read that big booklet that comes before the election with information on people and propositions, and the debates for and against them that are written in newspapers.

Instituting a test would decrease voter turnout, not because of people failing, but due to people going "fuck that, I just won't vote." Human apathy is a powerful opponent.

So yeah, I don't think you're idea would work at all.

Just one thing about your case, does it really matter what "people" think?

Excuse me, but that's not an argument, you fail to support your claim with any sort of evidence. How can it so easily be "end of story," I wish to know?

The military can't force a pacifist to fight, but there are other jobs for one who doesn't want to fight. If one does not want to go to a war, one should vote for the representative that backs their views.
And a clarification, Elara, you said the idea of the draft is not "right," so you're basing your case off the overlying value of what? Justice? Ethics?

What gives importance to the thoughts and preferences of the masses? Why not eliminate voting and create a system in which the most qualified person receives the job? What validates a democratic system?

"Anyway, to be honest, if people refuse to take a test to vote, good riddance. IF they fail the test, then that proves they don't know about who they are voting for. Good riddance."
Might you provide some examples of these questions? I'm really curious. Before I say anything about them, I'd like to know what exactly they might be.

"No more comments on what knowledge is is neccesary"
If you refuse to answer to questions about knowledge, the basis of your case, then your entire case falls. Correct me if I am wrong, but could your entire resolution be summed up as "In a democracy, only knowledgable citizens ought to vote"? Anyways, define what you consider a "democracy" as well, please?

I asked why knowledge is neccessary, too. I for one don't think one can use knowledge as a value, just because a value is something that isn't really debatable, e.g democratic ideals, human agency, justice, and such. One cannot really make the argument that justice isn't necessarily good, but I'm pretty sure I could make the argument that knowledge isn't necessarily good. However, if not your central value, to what end does knowledge achieve?

But in short, like the immigration debate, what really matters is that you're denying them the right to vote, violating the democratic ideal of the people voting, not just the a certain group of people.

No you may not.

, are you this condecending to everyone? Where on the doll did the people touch you?

Ad hominem attacks for the lose? But if you must ask, it's usually when they equate "not right" with "being forced into something you may not want to do." Or in other words using naturalistic fallacy.
Moving on, I would disagree that the free enlistment maximizes human agency for a number of reasons. People are in a sense forced into joining the military when they need the money and can't find a job elsewhere, no?
On a side note, one thing that I might qualify is that the people proposing a draft aren't really affected by it themselves. If they were, then I would think that it create a veil of ignorance, as not to discriminate between people of different incomes.

(d) none of the above

What is George W. Bush's supposed plan for the war one terror?

(a) Attack anyone who opposes us.
(b) Make friends with everyone!
(c) Try and negotiate, if the negotiations fail, go to war.
(d) none of the above.

If anyone doesn't know questions like these, or what's discusssed on the debates, then they aren't doing anything other than voting blindly. It would be like walking on a narrow an curved path with a blindfold, unless they know where they're going or what they're doing, they'll fall.

And this is a democratic republic by the way, electing the officials is the republic part. Democracy is making every law by popular vote, where republic is electing officials to make those laws. Our government allows citizens to vote on some things, like bonds a few years ago in my state.

Seeing as you don't even know the proper terminology for the questions, what would give you the right to vote? No offense, of course. Who's to say that only those with a degree in political sciences should be able to vote?
And read my post above, please?

Yeah, uh, one issue there.

If most of the PS3 interest stems from "how much profit can I make reselling it?", then the system isn't in good shape.

It means there's a massive demand, and in the long run, Sony has a definite advantage because their system is incredible. The games you see for PS3 don't even use it near it's maximum capability. Plus, what will people do when they make a Final Fantasy game for PS3? PS2 was incredible because many of its games were awesome, and it was a good system. In time, I think the same will be true for the PS3, in time.

First of all, thread maker, choose your resolution carefully, as one who makes the resolutions decides the wording, and possible path of the debate. Don't make a topic too vague, and make sure it is a normative statement; debates about "the sky is blue" tend to be a bit complicated.
Resolution example: Chocolate is good.

After that, the debate is up, and one can either affirm the resolution, or negate it. One might want to start with some sort of an outline.
Defining key words can also be important, but if one uses one that is questionable, it canbe detrimental to a case.

It's a good idea to have a value: some universally "good" ideal that can be commonly agreed on, e.g. truth, justice, human agency, et. al. Sometimes a value can be integrated into a resolution, for example: Resolved, Chocolate is good. Good is the overlying value of that debate, the affirming side would try to prove that chocolate has the attribute of goodness for such-and-such reasons, and the negating side would try to prove that chocolate does not in fact have the attribute of goodness.

Now we move on to making a value criterion, basically, it's easiest to define it as the means to achieving the value. To continue our sugary resolution, let's say that the affirming or negating side chooses wellbeing as their value criterion, then they would have to prove gives it the attribute of goodness. The value criterion must link to the value. Because the chocolate consumed increases the wellbeing of the individual, it is good for such-and-such reason.

Next, one will want some contentions, essentially reasons. For example, one could say: chocolate contains certain amino acids that promote good health. This is backed by [insert evidence and citation]. The result is a a net gain in wellbeing, achieving the value of goodness. Pure analysis often does not need as much citations as much as logic. If a contention has no impact, it is useless.

The negating side also has a width of arguments to utilize. They can provide their own case, proving that chocolate is not in fact good, attack the affirming case, or try to negate the resolution in itself as being not debatable.

Another point of debate is asking your opponent questions regarding their case, the downside obviously being that your opponent can make use of the question to further their own case.

And don't use logical fallacies, here's a list of them here. And don't use pathetic appeals or ethos appeals either, even if you're an admin, it usually makes one look bad. And be nice.

Heh, hate to break it to you, but even what you have there contradicts itself. For instance, chocolate is good? Good is subjective, what may be good to you can not be good to someone else, or if you bring in all the other factors, such as how bad chocolate is without other things added, then people could disagree entirely with your statement.

A lot of that is good though. I'll comment on it some more later.

It's debate, of course the resolution is a normative statement. You can't debate that chocolate is food. But thanks for asking, resolutions are supposed to be what is debated, sorry if I confused anyone if made it seem like a descriptive sentence. Let me give you another example of a resolution, in a clear normative statement.

Resolved, all people ought to eat chocolate.
or
Resolved, all just people should promote the eating of chocolate.

Granted it's not a very good resolution, and by far I wouldn't argue it, but it's an example. If one notices, the second one incorporates "just" as the implied value for the debate. So the affirming threadmaker has a definite advantage in the wording of the resolution. However, I find it often the case that it is easier to negate, so it balances out.
