See the MAP here

The map, linked above, shows the age, gender, and ethnic breakdown of HIV-infected patients in counties throughout the United States. Gray areas indicate a lack of data and not the absence of AIDS/HIV-positive individuals.

The 30th anniversary of HIV is just around the corner, and a new interactive map reveals U.S. data on the disease’s distribution. The information is as granular as individual counties and, for some cities, even zip codes.

The nonprofit mapping effort, called AIDSVu, isn’t a perfect representation of the disease in the United States. The visualization is based on 2008 data, and some states didn’t contribute the county or demographic information that others did. The map shows only diagnosed rates and cases. An estimated one in five HIV carriers in the United States are undiagnosed.

Despite these limitations, it may be the most thorough geographical depiction of HIV ever created.

“It shows HIV doesn’t respect borders like statistical reports do, and shows how far it’s reached into every part of the country, even rural areas,” said epidemiologist Patrick Sullivan of Emory University, one of the project’s leaders. “You can, for example, see a corridor of infection that goes down through the southeast. This is a new way of looking at this epidemic.”

Laws in every U.S. state require testing centers to report HIV-positive diagnoses, stripped of private information, to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Yet, building a map using this data was a massive undertaking.

AIDSVu leaders spent more than a year and a half coordinating the data’s entry into a single Google map. With just a few clicks, it shows county-by-county HIV cases and rates, and the epidemic’s patterns by gender, poverty, ethnicity and other demographics.

New York City and Washington D.C. even show the disease’s reach by zip code. For example, in zip code 10036, where this story was written, the rate of people diagnosed with HIV is at least 1.95 percent. That’s about three times New York state’s average.

The AIDSVu map will be continually updated as fresh data arrives. The organization hopes states and counties that didn’t provide more detailed data will change their minds, helping create an even more complete picture of the epidemic.

Heh, I'm incredibly bored.

Looks like I might have something lined up for next week, and I'm getting paid to read a friend's manuscript, but I found myself sitting around melting crayons yesterday.

And... I... uh... just won tickets to a Transformers convention this weekend. Woot?

Heck yeah.

I've also been going through tons of unedited photos, updated my resume, sent out feeler e-mails to publications, started figuring out how to make a plaster cast of my head, got in contact with a friend at this online local news site, began reading the manuscript, and started drafting a cover letter for this paper I'm looking into applying for.

But yeah, melting crayons... and watching Maury Povich play "Which of These Hollywood Starlets Was Born a Man?" and "Which of These 20 Guys Is the Father of This Slut's Triplets?"

EDIT: I'm also flying up with Stitch to go to the gay pride festival in San Francisco some time this month. Wish I could afford one of those "It's OK to be Takei" shirts, but then again I'm sure there'd be tons of people wearing them there.

OK, so the World Health Organization announced that cellular phones are indeed causing cancer and have put them on a list with lead, diesel fumes, and other harmful things known to be carcinogenic.

There have been, however, dissenting opinions.

No, cell phones don't cause cancer
By Bernard Leikind, Special to CNN

Editor's note: Bernard Leikind is a physicist. He has researched and taught at the University of Maryland, UCLA, General Atomics and the Livermore Laboratory. He has written essays about the cell phone radiation controversy for the Skeptic, a publication of the Skeptics Society, a scientific and educational organization that examines controversial claims. He pays T-Mobile about $40 a month for his cell phone service, which constitutes all of his financial dealings with cell phone companies. Click here for another viewpoint on cell phones and radiation.

(CNN) -- This week, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer announced that it believed cell phones were a "possible" carcinogen, putting them in the same category as diesel fumes, dry cleaning fluid, talcum powder and coffee. They are making a mistake.

It is too large and complex a matter to work out the details of their errors here. They discount the fundamental results of their own major studies, choosing to emphasize the questionable data from a small sub-group of their subjects. They ignore the century of physics research that strongly establishes the facts.

Microwaves from cell phones cannot cause cancer. This fact arises from more than 100 years of experiments and thought in electromagnetism, quantum mechanics and thermodynamics.

A cell phone radiates about 1 watt of electromagnetic waves. The waves go in all directions to find the cell tower. Molecules in the user's hand, ear, scalp, skull and brain absorb the radiation that passes by. Microwaves try to grab molecules and shake them. The radiation fields love water molecules, and there are many of those in a brain. The fields try to shake what they grab back and forth about a billion times a second.

All those molecules, however, are close to many neighbors. They continually knock into each other, transferring energy. Each molecule also vibrates, rotates and twists. The frequency of the collisions that exchange energy between all the molecules is about a trillion times a second. As the microwaves try to shake molecules a billion times a second, the molecules are sending the incoming energy to their neighbors a thousand times faster.

The energy from the phone's microwave fields rapidly spreads throughout all of the molecules in the tissues. This energy forms a part of the tissue's internal energy, and as the internal energy increases, the temperature increases.

Blood from elsewhere enters the warmed tissue. It absorbs some of the new energy and carries it away throughout the body. Eventually, the energy passes to the environment.

These facts describe the process by which any molecules absorb microwave radiation. If a researcher wishes to propose some mechanism by which cell phone microwaves might cause cancer, he or she must begin here.

But any such proposal faces an insurmountable problem. We all know of many processes that do exactly the same thing as the microwaves. These other processes are more intense -- some of them many times more intense -- than any cell phone's microwaves. If increasing tissues' internal energy with microwaves causes cancer, then so will these other processes.

What are these other processes? Here are some: basal metabolism, fever or inflammation, wearing a ski cap and scarf, drinking a cup of hot coffee or tea or a bowl of soup, and exercise.

A cell phone radiates about a watt of power, similar to a tiny holiday light. The body absorbs a part of that, which is rapidly spread throughout the body by the blood. This is much smaller than the amount of power produced by the chemical reactions that keep our cells alive, expressed in watts per kilogram. Converting the number of food calories I burn in a day to watts (a physicist's power unit), I am like a 90-watt light bulb.

When I exercise on a treadmill, in 30 minutes I burn 500 or 600 calories. Converting that to power gives about 1,200 watts. Divide by 85 kilograms, my mass, to find that while I am exercising, about 14 or 15 watts per kilogram appear throughout my body.

If less than 1 watt per kilogram from the cell phone can cause cancer, by some unknown means, then why doesn't my exercise, which is more than 15 times more intense, also cause cancer? Surely, we would have noticed if it did. I may sprain my ankle jogging along the street, but I will not give myself cancer.

The radiation from a cell phone is more intense in the caller's skin and hand, ear, scalp and skull, than it is in the brain. Skin cells replicate many times more often than any brain cell, which makes them more vulnerable to the breakdowns that lead to cancer. Why aren't we seeing an epidemic of skin cancer?

Readers need not worry about developing brain cancer while using their cell phones. I recommend, however, that you do not text while you are driving, and that you always wear your seat belt.

What are your thoughts? Supposedly makers of smart phones have already started putting warning labels noting that you should talk into the phone with it at least half an inch away from your head.

I figure the Dakotas aren't interested in collecting such data since they're completely dark gray. What's up with Ohio? No surprise about Idaho.

Yeah, since this is broken up by county, and with California's southern counties being so massive it looks like less populated areas like the Mojave Desert are looped in with larger cities. No shock about L.A. or San Francisco counties, though.

So I've become unexpectedly busy. Friday, had the Asian activist group I've been getting into drop a 40-page newsletter on me and wanting me to get started on it right away as it was supposed to be done in December. They've apparently hired other people to do it before, but it's consistently fallen through.

I e-mailed them a few weeks back offering that I would do it, but was told they already handed it off to someone else. So when I got an e-mail from the president Friday, it pretty much went, "Why didn't you offer sooner? I handed this off to this other guy and he's had it for a week and he's STILL not done. You finish it in a week!" Greeeeeeat.

The guy kept frantically calling and e-mailing to tell me to change things to grayscale and so on as though I should drop everything and just work on this whether I had plans this weekend or not.

We'll see how this goes. Truthfully, the newsletter does need A LOT of work.

Still working on the newsletter. I'm up to page 12. The guy I'm doing this for has some very specific instructions on where he wants pictures and the designs of certain pages, but they're VERY difficult to meet. Hence why I'm only on page 12. I really only started on Monday since I had to wait to get a template from the last person who did this.

I HATE this thing.

Got another writing job. They're cool if I start in two weeks since I told them about the newsletter.

Hopefully I'll have a fair amount of money saved up by October.

We start in Athens. Unfortunately there won't be time to visit the Parthenon, but Brandon and I figure it's an excuse to come back since I've ALWAYS wanted to visit Greece. Then we sail to Alexandria and take a day tour heading toward Cairo to the Pyramids and Sphinx. Then we go to Israel for a few days, visit Jerusalem and Nazareth. Then I think we're going to Turkey for a day, and then a couple places in Greece again, and then the cruise ends in Rome. Not sure how much time we'll have to visit things there.

My parents are pretty much treating this as a sampler tour, seeing what they'd want to come back and visit again.

Anyway, chipping away at the newsletter. It's coming along.

Fuck you, piece of shit ex-producer of my old Rocky Horror cast. You were fired because of your sneakiness and greed, and now you're trying to drag down the cast through a farce of a legal battle because you, a 50-something-year-old man with a 25-year-old INSANE girlfriend (who's TWO WEEKS older than your daughter), NEED to validate your existence by exerting power over teenagers in their underwear.

Fuck you very much, Sir Cocksucker Shit Barbra Streisand.

Elara, if you want the whole story, Brandon (Hobbit, not B-Hump) posted a link to it on his Facebook.

I'd heard it a few times from my friends on cast, but now they'd just rather tell the world since he's being such a prick. One of the first lessons I was taught after joining cast was to NEVER air the cast's dirty laundry (especially online), but now it's like, fuck it. The story needs to be told.

I'm kind of amused. Brandon's sister is pregnant. She's 17 and she's engaged. Their dad was calling around to disappointedly tell everyone. Brandon happened to get the call while he was performing on stage and had to silence his phone between songs.

Anyway, she's going to the courthouse next month when she turns 18. Since she's been living in Washington for most of the last year none of us have met this guy.

All I've seen of him are pictures on Sara's Facebook - so all I know is he wears a crucifix earring that reaches down to his nipple and he's fucking the equivalent of my little sister.

I can't find the pictures of him wearing it. I think they might have been in a friend of theirs' album that they were tagged in or something, but all of their "engagement" pictures have him wearing this axe type one:

Seems like he's wearing some form of dangling earring in all of the pictures I've seen of him.

He really reminds me of Casey back in the day, looking at all of these photos.

Wanna talk nuts? Last night while waiting for the band's show to start at this place in Fullerton, Becky turns to me and starts telling me how she's getting texts, right then, from Mandi (the girl who wrote that whole post) saying that Mark's making calls to her work, trying to get her fired.

Becky, who is one of three people he says he trusts completely and listens to (next to Bill and Christine, the woman who pretty much created the cast 24 years ago), has told him off about this already and he's not listening to her. So she's cutting him off.

The main concern is that he's setting up a precedent and it's SCARING the whole Rocky community, because if someone has beef with a cast, they could pull all this crap. Apparently he's been creating a two-pronged attack by going to the city halls of towns the cast keeps trying to get a theater in and saying that 1) they need a permit to operate and 2) there are RAPES regularly going on at Rocky.

The second on is outright slander, but the permit thing is what's scaring the other casts of the world. Those cost THOUSANDS of dollars and this could destroy EVERYONE if it turns out they need it.

I really wish Twentieth Century Fox would come in and intercept him because this means less money in THEIR pocket, and as we all know Hollywood cares about money, numero uno.

I'm a bit bored and don't feel like going back to working on this newsletter. Started this survey last week and left the tab open. The newsletter is DONE... for now. It's being looked over.

1* First grade teacher's name: Mrs. Frias, I think that's how it was spelled.

2* Last word you said: ... said? (As in asking Brandon, "What was the last thing I said?")

3* Last song you sang: "Home." That f-ing song is stuck in my head.

4* Last person you hugged: Brandon

5* Last thing you laughed at: Something on TV.

6* Last time you said I dont remember: ... Very funny.

7* Last time you cried: Either yesterday or the day before.

8* Last time you hurt yourself: Had a TV fall on my knee a few days ago? But then again, does a wisdom tooth causing all sorts of pain count?

9* What color socks are you wearing: Not wearing any.

10* What's under your bed: Dirty clothes, empty bottles, and a voracious black hole, I'm assuming.

11* What time did you wake up today: Around 6:30 a.m.

12* Current taste: KFC grilled chicken and Diet Coke.

13* Current hair: It's down, unbrushed.

14* Current obsession: Oh jeez. This could take hours, especially if we're talking fandom. Well, the short of it, then: finding a job, conventions, and pirate metal.

15* Current annoyance: Again, this could take a while. The short: teenage girls (or at least women who still act like them), posers, and people being disruptive during movies. The most recent annoyance has been being surrounded by people who are in some way disparaging (ex: friend who has been unemployed for years telling me I should come to her for help with my resume, which she picked up and looked over before making said comment, etc).

16* Current ringtone: My default is the beginning part of "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" by Dropkick Murphys. Brandon, some friends and family have the last chorus to Metallica's "Judas Kiss."

17* Current desktop background: I have a revolving set of desktop images. Right now it's an old photo of Anna May Wong dancing.

18* Current worry: Finishing this 40-page newsletter is also pretty nerve-racking right now.

19* Current hate: The job search. See also #15.

20* Current favorite article of clothing: Renaissance faire garb, I suppose.

21* Favorite physical feature of the preferred sex: Eyes.

Elara, I think we're going to Ephesus in Turkey. Among the tours are visiting what was supposedly the final residence of the Virgin Mary, so my mom, the super Catholic, is thrilled.

Finished the 40-page newsletter yesterday and sent a PDF to the client I did it for. Took me a week. He's printing it out and mailing me the corrections some time this week while he's in Hawaii. I'm REALLY hoping he doesn't have any drastic changes. Then again, I'm hoping I get paid for this job.

Getting around to editing a manuscript for Stitch, which he plans to submit to a publisher... one day.

In the meantime I've been making and jarring strawberry vanilla jam, shooting Voidcrush shows, and I spent all of today wandering around Los Angeles because I haven't had a day to myself in a couple weeks. Hit up the interactive Da Vinci exhibit in Hollywood, a taxidermy store, a vintage toy shop, among other things.

I need to start on a story I'm doing for this other website I just started working for.
