California, present.

Specifically Cerritos/Long Beach (in Los Angeles County), about a 15-20 minute drive from L.A.

Ten minutes to the ocean, 20 minutes to Hollywood (it's NOT glamorous at all, unless you're like me and you wander around it in zombie make-up with a few hundred people), 30 minutes to the mountains, 2 hours from Mexico, 6 hours from Arizona.

I go to a university in "the OC" (Orange County). A lot of people in California get pretty judgmental about the OC because of a certain... ahem... TV series. Yeah, it's got a lot of rich douches, but then again so do L.A. and San Francisco. Tons of hipsters everywhere in this state.

It's kinda trippy living here. You see a lot of craziness, and just about every week we come across a movie/TV shoot. "Dexter" and "CSI: Miami" regularly shoot within a couple miles of my house. "CSI: Miami" shot its last episode at my university. I had to interview the crew for the paper at the time.

Elara, Stitch, and WhiteRose are from relatively the same area. FX and others are from the Northern region.

Currently watching an old tape on things I recorded off TV, god knows how long ago. So far there's been a Miss America pageant with 98 Degrees performing, an episode of The McLaughlin Group from like 2002, and an episode of "Heroes" from season 1.

Not really. Probably going to head to one of the local museums, and then hang out at my friend's apartment with my goddaughter and when she goes to sleep we'll pop in "The Human Centipede" and watch it together in the dark while my boyfriend's at band practice.

We've still got Kyoku.

Not to mention those of our old crowd down here in Long Beach who aren't around much anymore: GuardianOni, Pockets, Junkie, Zoso, avatar of law, Captain Jack Sparrow.

I don't know where Shuyin is these days, but he started living about 30 miles away from us.

I remember when the Medford people were pretty strong. Evo, Kaijin, Drizzt, Rain.

But why quibble? We all outnumber Kansas.

EDIT: Whoops, forgot Angel of Deceit, Makura, NUCKLEARKNIGHT, venomouslobster, Broken Dreams, MurdockdeNoss, FilteredSight, and Abazaba for California.

Reading "Maus" book 2. A few pages from ending now.

I'll be re-reading "Watchmen" again (I've read it like 6 times) since it's the book for next week's classes.

Otherwise for American studies I've had to read through a good chunk of "Landon Carter's Uneasy Kingdom." Not a very riveting story, but he has about 8 of his slaves lead an armed revolt off his plantation at the beginning.

Posted on 10-03-10 09:08 PM, in Glee Doing a Rocky Horror Episode Link
So with the news that the high school show choir's cover of "Sweet Transvestite" leaked, it seems the announcement made at this year's Comic-Con of "Glee" doing a "Rocky Horror" episode is becoming all too true.

I'm not a fan of "Glee." I've tried to give it a chance a few times, but found it so completely and utterly obnoxious and exaggerated it's hard to watch it for more than the musical numbers (and even then I still had to change the channel). It's like "Degrassi" but teenagers (who look 25) fight by singing pop songs at each other. It's comparable to mediocre karaoke with a major studio providing costumes and sets and celebrity guests.

But with much of the Rocky Horror community (in which I'm sort of a part of) being former high school theater geeks obsessed with musicals, they LOVE the show, so it really was only a matter of time.

As far as I'm concerned this is the only Rocky Horror-themed episode of a show that has my full blessing:

Last weekend was the 35th anniversary convention of Rocky Horror's release. Barry Bostwick came out and mooned everyone. Barry and Meatloaf will be in the "Glee" epsiode, which is set to air on the 26th (I think).

Anyway, here's a bunch of pictures my boyfriend and I took:

We worked at the 30th anniversary convention in Vegas back in 2005. Good stuff.

Finished the "Maus" books. They're excellent, of course.

Going through "Manliness and Civilization" for my theory class now.

Haven't started re-reading "Watchmen" yet. I already have a really good idea of what's happened, so it's a lower priority since I've got a mountain of work to return to tomorrow.

Posted on 10-04-10 05:00 AM, in Last Movie You Saw? Thoughts? Link
Tonight was movie night at my friends. We watched "Repo: The Genetic Opera" and "The Human Centipede." Over-rated, on both accounts.

I liked "Repo" better only for the Repo Man, himself, and Blind Mag. Otherwise, the costumes and the way it was shot were cool, but I didn't dig it overall.

"Human Centipede" I'd been avoiding for a year. I heard about it a little more than a year ago and the mere thought of it made me extremely uneasy and haunted my thoughts for a week.

Seeing it now, I can't figure out what all the fuss is about other than the premise of it. If you approach it like it's a bad horror film (it fits Rocky Horror almost to the letter for the first half of the movie), and just laugh at it you'll at least be entertained for an hour. Then it gets really boring.
